Everyone thinks American sports cars are the greatest thing in automotive history, but this is not the case what so ever. Below is a list of points against American cars...

DAY TO DAY USE:- The cars have low mpg- They fall apart very easily; this explains the amount of jokes made about American car quality.- Resale values are much lower than foreign imports such as, Honda, Toyota, BMW.- Overall, the quality in the product is inferior to foreign cars.

BODY/DESIGN:- They are ugly, plain and simple- They are oversized- Weak chassis- High center of gravity- Overweight, reflecting the American population

INTERIOR:- Plastic cheap parts- The design often resembles they body, UGLY!

PERFORMANCE:This list is far too long for bullet points.

Starting with one of the weakest points of an American car is its handling. Referring back to the body of the car, it has a high center of gravity, oversized, overweight, and weak chassis. These are negative attributes of a car to perform well when it comes to handling. To make matters even worse, the stock tires usually come with high profiles making bumps easier on the car but with the lack of grip. This is would explain the reputation of American cars and poor handling. Another point against American cars and their lack of ability to handle is the choice between RWD and AWD. American car designers think it might be a good idea to put 600 BHP down on the track through just 2 wheels. You can only imagine how much the back end on these cars want to just tail out, making handling corners not the easiest of tasks. I guess American car companies only heard of AWD in trucks and SUV’s, but as they call it 4 x 4.

A positive attribute of American cars is the amount of power under the hood. However, this is also a downfall for the car at the same time. American cars have been known to put at least a V6 under the hood, and when an American car fan hears the words like “Hemi” and Letters like “SRT” and “GT” they seem to want to hand who ever said these words a free beer. Yes, power is great but you don’t always need 8 cylinders to make a car move quickly. Though in American cars you do, these cars are so heavy that if you put in anything less than 6 cylinders they won’t move, but adding the extra cylinders is also adding even more weight. Example the new Dodge Challenger is 4164 lbs compare that to the already fairly heavy Nissan GT-R (R35) at 3814 lbs.

No, I am not going to bash these cars without mentioning some exceptions in American cars. First off one of the pride and joys of American cars is the Corvette ZO6 and ZR1. My uncle on firsthand experience took a corvette driving class and had the opportunity of driving this car (ZO6). During his few days of driving these cars he explained that even though with all these new drivers slamming on the brakes, jumping on the throttle and generally just abusing these cars during the process of learning to drive they were able to handle the abuse. Another car that received a good review in performance is the new Cadillac CTS-V. Now I won’t go into great deal of specifics but it had great power and handling which breaks the reputation American cars have. Now there are other few cars that do not fit in this stereotype, but not enough to get rid of the reputation of American cars

I've had many cars in my years of driving but only two were American made- a 1960 Corvair which caught fire in the Nevada desert and burned to the ground, and a 1990 Dodge Grand Caravan (for the kids) which was a bucket of bolts. For me not much changed in the American design and build quality in those 30 years. There have been a few more good American made cars than the couple you mentioned but the list is still pretty short.

Did you mean to post this in another forum by chance?

That is a pretty broad statement, all American cars? I don't own any but I think that is pretty wide and broad...there are some decent ones, but your right most of them are not great.

My X-Terra is made in Tennessee and is wonderful....

The real question is what is his point? Datsun15 inform us? I am not a fan but (hey Jesda you'll appricate this) my dad just gave his partner his LS460 and bought a CTS brand new (they are giving them away). Not a bad car at all, I was expecting to think it was a pretend Lexus or something but pretty nice fit and finish.

You know, I'd like to buy an American car someday....but they don't all suck.

although chevy trucks last well over 200k miles with untimely oil changes

i had a 1994 ford ranger... in 45k miles it only broke down on me 3 times. One time i was involved in some mischief and as i run back to the car, it shut off.

The trucks are the exception....the F150 wins alot of reviews, Motor Trend just gave the F150 truck of the year and the Toyota Tundra came in 3rd behind the Chevy and the Nissan wasn't even competitive.

For a full size truck I'd consider the F150 or Silverado.

I can't trust a foreign truck, never drove one but I doub't it will make a difference in my opinion. I like foreign cars because there made better than some American cars.

Chevy and GMC all the way

Ford=Fail.

But I always like cars over trucks because of the harder suspension and just overall tightness because of the lower center of gravity.

Full size trucks only, for mid-size ones I found the Ford and Chevy product to be crapola. I looked at Ford's smaller 6 cylinder and the Chevy Colorado I5 engine..both piles of crap. I looked at the Hummer H3, what an abortion, horrible gas mileage. Ended up with a Nissan X-Terra and do not regret.

But for a big, Merica' is the only way to go, Nissan is getting out of the big truck business completely and letting Dodge build them.

Toyota trucks are wonderful. Toyota and GM are buddy-buddy, and thus mucho platform sharing/technology sharing. GM aided Toyota in its V8 program, and the Toyota trucks now seem to have a softer GM feel to them when compared to other brands. The new Chevy trucks are, in my opinion, best in comparison to others as far as feel and driveability but I am no authority on longevity or long term quality as I don't own any.

As far as this guys senseless rambling, such generalities are fool's gold. I've always thought the Viper had a very nice layout besides being too small for me. It drove wonderfully and made great cackly V10 sounds. The Dodge pickups/SUVs are fine in my book after working on many. The Concord platform on which the Intrepid and 300M were based was a great design as long as you went with a 3.2 or 3.5. Very sturdy. Much better than the new Magnum platform, I thought. For me, however, the advantage in buying Japanese seems to be supporting the American workforce as many Japanese cars are built in the U.S. were many U.S. cars are not. That would probably lead to the difference in quality. The biggest differences are seen in the lower end, I think, with Accords/Civics and others in the same classes respectively the Japanese make much better quality low cost vehicles. The power, weight, build quality and fuel economy of lower end Japanese cars far exceed American "equivilent." My 99 Accord was a far stretch better than any Malibu, Taurus, Stratus, etc...

ok here we go i am 20 years old i am from ct and i hate american cars my first car was a mercury tracer but before you boo me i hated it . it was the biggest piece of s*** i ever bought it blew a transmission blew a waterpump should i keep going . overheated 2 times ,blew a head gasket and had absolutley no balls at all. then i bought a 95 maxima se from a uncle best god damm car i ever had it had power was better quality ran better, got better mpg, was bigger , and required less maintenence ever after 165,000 miles i hardley ever had to do anything to it as apposed to my mercury which i was fixing every weekend. then i bought my infiniti g35 sedan another excellent car it is older than my mothers grand prix and it runs 5 times better has had 5 times less maintence, my infiniti has a 3.5 and the gran prix has a 3.8 supercharged and i can still spank it no problem with my infiniti.

ANOTHER REASON TO HATE AMERICAN CARS BECAUSE THEY SUCK!!!!!!! NISSAN/INFINITI RULES

besides look at gm they just filled for bankrupcy because all of their cars suck so bad!!!!

Funny thread!!

I started out owning Ford's (69 Mach 1 was my first).Switched over to Nissan/Infiniti.

To be honest, as much as I love my Nissan/Infiniti, they have given me far more problems than any of my Fords. However, the last Ford I owned was a 99 model. Can't speak to what they are producing now.

And, I still have a soft spot for those 'stupid mustangs'.....

This is an American car that raped the Porsche GT. And BTW I love that company (Porsche). Try not to make stupid blanket statements like that. Also, I'd be willing to bet the house that NO ONE from these NICO forums has joined your pathetic club.

Can some one please kill this thread?

Saying Pontiac and Chevy are both part of GM isn't "Car Advice" IT IS A FACT!

If I were to say "If I were you, I would just work on making friends with your own mother, because she was bad mouthing the crap out of you in my bed last night"

THAT is advice.
