 « Re: (hbpignosePA)

alright ive been slackingbut heres an update.

i disassembled the rear subframe; and today dropped all the arms off at a shop to get the bushings out. they didnt have time to start it today; but will call me when its done (hopefully by thursday)

so i started working on the subframe about a week ago, burning the metal bushings out. This job is a PITA; if you got the cash id pay someone to do it.

the fire!!!

i thought id make it interesting and light them all at once still took well over an hour or more, and theres still rubber left.

the paint on the subframe is tough to get off, im gonna have to use some paint stripper and then prime it before i paint it as well. i also gotta get those pesky collars off... SOOO i gave up on it for now.

then i started cleanin up the gas tank. this thing had years of oil and grime on it. bout an hour or so of wirebrushing, brake cleaner and it is clean enough to eat off of.

i noticed this is loose, should i replace it? i think its just the breather hose

i was contemplating spraying it silver, but thought it would show dirt too well.

after 3 coats of paint: (not dry, and still might do one more)

in between coats i took a look at the drivers side latch on my cressida that is all messed up. didnt figure it out yet, but also pulled out all the seats to clean the interior up a bit. i cannot stand nasty interiors

this sums up how gross the previous owner was

thursday's list includes:

tightening the koni dampeners, as well as respraying them. painting the strap for the gas tank, painting the axles touch up the rear differential, attempting to make more progress on the subframe, and hope i get my arms back so i can start painting those too.

ordered my balljoints today as well; should be here tommorow, then need to order a few odds and ends (bolts that are FUBAR etc) and i should be ready to put it back together

yeah i posted about the s14 in my build so as not to clutter yours. i don't think its a big deal if you can wiggle that, but to be safe you can throw a new clamp on it and tighten it down

If you were talking about the hose itself being loose I assume it's supposed to be snug. We all know petroleum eats rubber over time so maybe it has seen better days. But in the pic, it looks like you're asking about the hose outside the hose connected w/ a clamp. That is just some protective foam that doesn't need to be replaced. It is just there for protection.
I usually remove things like that for weight savings lol. In this case you're probably safe to because of that small plastic inner fender piece that goes there. Most are made of a foam material that only collects water or oil and gets heavier .
I removed a lot of them on my friend's 1990 talon tsi. They were gross anyway!

update time!

well the shop i dropped my arms off at is dicking around with them, i only got half of them back end of the month for inspection, and the guy actually workin on em was sick two days this week so alas i didnt have much to work on.

started cleaning the arms, kunckles etc i do have... but no pics- ill wait till its all done

then it all goes right back to get the new bushings pressed in.

the subframe is putting up quite a fight too with the collars, and im realizing i shouldve paid a shop to do it (i dont mind hard work but its rediculous)

NOW what i did do today.... drove out to my friends to get started prepping the underbody for truckbed liner.

hes almost done.... till i found another spot i used to like mudflaps

heres some more of his work... these both apparently were a real pita

new section of the rail, right by the curve on the drivers side. apparently theres three frames inside each other, so it was a b**** to bend each section to fit but it looks fresh.

of all things to rot, i had a subframe bolt that was 1/3 as thick as it was supposed to be... it was desintegrating so i went to the yard sat and had the guys pull out the pin; cost 40 bucks and i didnt have to break a sweat plus they gave me half the floor.

mike did a great job getting it set without hacking it apart

and heres what i spent 4 hours on this morning... got the spare tire well, and most of the drivers side done; but i probably need at least another 8 hours first time i used an angle grinder with a wirebrush... next ill use the drill mounted ones to get the hard to reach stuff... then probably some 60 grit mounted on blocks to rough it up before i clean it off and start applying the truckliner w a brush

the last few updates didnt get much love... wheres the feedback nico?

Hey man your friend does great work on the rust patching! You might want to think about drilling a small drain hole in the frame rail though, not sure if water would sit in there (can't tell from that angle).
Reinstalling the subframe is easy! Well if your car is near the ground and you have a hydro jack (install the diff and put the jack @ the diff)...

Mudflaps that don't keep mud out? Fail.

 « Re: (Didderson)

yea i was thinking of doing that... there are the drain holes in the back and front of the patch... and obviously it didnt work anyways cuz it was destroyed...

lol

yea the subframe is simple to put back up

its just time consuming to redo all the arms and do the bushings.

my goal is to have it drivable after easter break (next tuesday) or the next sat at the latest... then its just the interior left (which wont take long) and at the very least i can at least drive it

man I'm not looking forward to grinding all that crap off my undercarriage either

if I can make a suggestion if you're going through all the trouble to do that hit it with a coat or two of epoxy primer before you undercoat it, provides a good base and keeps out moisture

i probably will prime it, but does it matter what i use?

i was gonna use somethin outta a rattle can (i dont have a spray gun) on the entire bottom before i put the bed liner down. im sanding off mostly just the old undercoating, but some spots theres bare metal showing so...

well epoxy primer is better than the stuff in a rattle can but you might be able to find it that you can brush on I'm not sure...I've talked with some pro painters and browsed a few hot rod forums and they all swear by it so I'll probably go that route b/c yes the north east sucks for eating away at our cars
