gs14racer,
Why did you configure the coolant lines like you did? Do you run a thermostat? Have you had any cooling issues? The reason I ask is because the only way I can get my 450Z to run under 210F during a 1/2hr track session was by "gutting" the thermostat. I'm running a large Griffon rad which worked very well with a 250HP 3.0lt 6cyl. I'm wondering if your plumbing option would fix my problem. Obviously the factory thermostat was a restriction. Let me know. Thanks

i think you'll find that if you wire in the stock tach it will read, even tho it will be reading 2x as high you can adjust it to read correctly, we do this all the time on rb motor swaps...
good work tho...im considing a z32 vh swap with a t51kai bolted to the side.

I am pretty sure he did that for 2 reasons. 1 he lives in miami florida so cold days really aren't cold. And 2 he is on the pedal everytime he drives it so a t-stat would only hurt him. That's my perception of things.

Being up in Canada I would assume you would drive it on cold days below 50 so having a t-stat would depend on the weather I guess. If it's just a track car I would go without it, just be sure to warm it up before heading out on really cold days. May even need to block the front of the rad a bit. The t-stat housing can't be that good for flow and bypassing it should provide a few more gpm's in there.

Just remember that on some cars, without a thermostat the water will pass through the radiator too quickly and not cool down enough, though this usually more a function of not enough water volume in the system.

Also on most modern engines, the thermostat is a 2 valve setup and if you just remove it you will leave the bypass port open at all times which will lead to overheating.

usually running with no t-stat will lead to the pump cavitating due to the lack of back pressure. So usually you need some sort of orifice in stead of the t-stat. I guess I'll run like that and just take my time getting the oil up to temp before running hard.
thanks

You could always just gut the Tstat and put it back in if backpressure is a concern. However you said you took it out and it helped so I don't see cavatation as an issue.

Re-read the first post. I guess you already did that.

The muffler was a "quick and dirty job" which I will have to address this winter. After working on the car for over 1.5 yrs, I was tired of working on it and just wanted to drive it. So 4 days before my annual lapping day in May, the car was close to being drivable. So I threw on whatever doors, hoods, fenders I could find to close the car off. I did a 3hr exhaust system so I could hear if anything was interfering or rubbing. 2" off the manifold (beautiful headers like gs14racer will have to wait till later) to a single Dynomax muffler with 2.5" exit. Glad I did, as it turned out that both rear flex brake lines were rubbing on the rims! A simple 10 minute fix, which could have "wrecked" my day.
So I have been running the car every chnace I could rather then working on it. Having run on several track this year to tune the suspension/heating/brakes I was glad the exhaust was as quite as it was. We have a couple of tracks in the area that have a 95dB noise limit. At full throttle I was running 97dB. So as much as I would like to open up the exhaust some more I have to be careful.

hey 450z,
I checked out your ride at CarDomain and found it really cool.
One thing you displayed(I think it was 1/2 way down page 2)was your wiring diagram. It was a bit small and not readable.I was wondering if you would post it up on this site somewhere or if you could Email it to me?

As far as power goes the LSx is way more upgradable with bolt on's. However if you do everything yourself and spend another year on it you can have one sick DETT probably over 800 hp. Just depends on what you and your wallet are willing to go through I guess.

Oh, I measured the belt and it seems as if I need a 32" 4 rib belt. Sound close?

T45,

That sounds about right my belt is 30.5 inches long, but remember, I moved my accessories around.

Reason im thinking of scrapping it, is that i need the car to be reliable next year for the events id like to run, and I cant seem to find any low mileage VHs around here in florida, plus it would be nice to have a little bit less weight in the car as the ls1 is lighter and has more power, but is no near as cool as the VH. My biggest problem right now is time, work is crazy and time is very scarce.

Im really torn on this one right now, the ls1 is great and all but the VH is a VH.

have you thought about an electric water pump. Right now the shop Im dealing with for my manifold is also cutting an adapter plate for me. With that I can bolt the plate to the block and then CRS offers an electric pump that will then bolt to the plate easily. Let me know I will take picks once its done. They said they will have both ready by the end of the week.

Well I've got my upgrade valvesprings (pics & info coming), but I can't promise you an ETA on cams. They'll be done though because I have the material for them, but it's on the backburner until my car's going.

Maybe you could slap an LS1 in there for the time being, but keep your VH45 rig spare and then when I have some cams for you, you'll be able to do a sick build with some high lift cams, and bung the VH back in there?

Yeah, just slap a LS1 in there for a little while. rofl

LS engine are ugly, inefficient and gas hogs. Other than that they are great for high horsepower!

They came with spacers because the spring free length is marginally shorter than factory length.

Less coils means greater valvelift capability & increased spring pressure. Increased material diameter (by 0.1) further adds to spring pressure.
