Post Title: HB's build thread: better late than never
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:31 PM 2/11/2009

Alright well ive had my 240 for about 3 years now, and ive done a few upgrades which i was far too lazy to document, perhaps with the time restraints i had since the car served as my daily for that time period. I currently am lowered on koni shocks and RSR springs, q45 brakes up front and enkei mesh wheels. My build will probably be a slow one, with most work being done in stages. For this winter, i have a list i want to accomplish:

s15 hlsd install- check
Rucas (PBM probably) -actually went SPL check
Energy Suspension bushings (possibly only the rears for this hibernation period)- check
180sx manual seat belt conversion-check
redo the interior (recover glovebox, armrest and door panels, new sound deadening etc)-check minus the recovering of the panels
Most importantly i need to tackle the rust thats accumulating on my car for 20 years-mad props to mike check!!

re-undercoating is in order when im done with the rust repair. I got some in the bay area (strut towers) but i may wait till next fall to tackle that when i pull my motor

STAGE ONE COMPLETE!! will update with a driving impression in a few days when its on the road and headin down windy roads

some pics of the rust

-thats what i got up front
i hate the NE

anyways so i started with gutting my interior to get my car ready for my friend who is going to help me cut out all the rot and patch my holes with new metal.

a little bastard i found under a panel

used dry ice on the sound deadening, that crap really works... note the carnage

next after getting up most of the sound deadening i began to wirebrush all the rough spots to smooth out all my surfaces in preparation for a nice spray of white rattlecan (after i patch my floors etc)

while it might not look like much, its a big dent in my work. hopefully by friday ill have dates to start the metalwork, and a clean shot of a totally clean cabin

i cannot start the rest of the projects until i drive the car to his house, and drive it back so it may be a week or two till i get some more work done but its a start i guess

comment, enjoy

I want to check out this build, I too have a build thread and have been adding parts since 240 is my DD. I also have a problem with rust and am debating whether or not to repair it or just find a good shell and swap everything over to it. Good luck with all the work and I look forward to the build.

looking really good so far. now will you gut the interior or put it back in?

Post Title: Re: HB's build thread: better late than never (SR20DET.240)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:43 PM 2/11/2009

thanks im contemplating stich welding too (depends on how nice my friend is) where the doors end and the rear seat area begins, the dip i mean. also i might fab up some cross mounts for the trans tunnel or seat mounts in the front to the back seat area

i will still run back seats, because i like a clean interior... but im toying with fabbing some braces to run under the seats... idk yet the guy whos helping me has access to a laser cutter for custom stuff so we will see

Good luck with the build. Kudos for tackling that cancer

Definitely going to keep track of this thread.

Also op, im pretty much going to be exactly doing the same thing that you just showed in those pics pretty soon. So, how much do those wire brush things cost? Just curious.

Looks good so far.

Gut the interior, that's where the secks starts.

Good to see another white Hatch in PA! :D

YAY!

I told you i would have my eye out for it.

I was going to comment on how clean your cockpit looked but you already mentioned it.

I like the way you give a realistic goal for the year or season, Very smart. There is nothing wrong with a slow build that only means for the most part that it is being done right to your standards. Planning ahead is also good which i noticed you are doing by doing everything in stages, i know just by reading that, that i am going to enjoy watching this thread.

I need to buy a wire brush thing so i can do that to my car, and play with some dry ice.

Looks good so far man!

One Love,

Ghasty

the wire brushes i got at lowes for like 5 bucks a piece. im gonna go back and get a few more. You can probably use one for the whole interior, but i had ALOT of excess tar and goo that wouldve ment hours to get it all up. at the very least ill buy one more to do one last sweep after im done.

wire brush is the best bang for the buck to clear paint and that tar stuff... ill use it under the car too when i spray it again and then truck bed line it.

WC- no ill have a full interior, im not that baller

honestly the rust isnt too bad, the rails are flawless all around its basically in the creases from 20 years of salted roads

i probably wont be able to work on it till saturday so ill update sunday or monday

good choice, i'm only wondering cuz i'm keeping full interior

now i forget, but i'm almost positive you said your pulling the body harness right?

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 7:14 PM 2/12/2009

not pulling it per see, but im removing everythign i dont need (all the wiring for the auto seat belts, and when i pull the dash for my swap ill remove the non essentials (AC wiring, Cruise control, among other systems im not going to run. for now im just gutting the auto belt wiring.... i only want to pull the dash once when i do my swap

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 7:19 PM 2/12/2009

oh i see. i was going to say if you pull it i recommend wiring a plug in at the license plate lighting. it makes it easier if you ever do have to pull the harness

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 2:01 PM 2/17/2009

Alright update time:

so i finished cleaning up the interior (mostly) ill go back over it again with the wire brush before i spray it. but i figure for now with dirty feet i just spread the dirt around; and im gonna be cutting and welding in patches anyways

and for WC this is the spot im talkin about... note my frusteration

i began removing all the wiring for the auto seatbelts since i will be putting in factory 180sx belts; which unfortunately are on back-order. I did buy the headliner already

heres where im confused on the wiring... i realize that some of the wires will continue to the dash, which im not pulling till i swap motors, but after examining the wiring for that attach to the control box for the belts, there are three black wires that run back through the car. not sure where they go; i already am up to the divide in wiring re wrapping everything, i guess ill have to backtrack.

anyone know where these wires go? are they grounds? The FSM doesnt have the pin numbers and what each wire goes to that i can find.

my friend got back to me with some dates to start my patches. that work will get a start march 7th, so i desided to install my s15 helical differential awhile. got the car airborne today, and drained the fluid. Ill pickup later this week on pullin it apart

on a funny note this morning i took the last of my datsun to the scrap yard. Was going to borrow my uncles truck; but our schedules werent matching so i said **** it. I love having a beat *** car

500 lbs of suspension arms, shocks, both doors and some other random pieces. stay tuned

I assume you've got inserts? How does it ride?

You ever wanna sell those, you let me know.

rears are full shocks, fronts are inserts. they feel amazing..... drop isnt baller like the coilover fanboys crave but its a decent drop and perfect for a daily car.

probably wont be sellin them thou

Post Title: Re: (PHeller)
Posted by: 240lookis at 5:03 PM 2/17/2009

where are you getting the manual seatbelts?
i want some.
auto seat belts are a waist of space, wires, energy, everything.

Post Title: Re: (240lookis)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 5:06 PM 2/17/2009

pandagarage is aparently getting some in their shipment in march

but i got dibs i want ones w blue trim lol

they are pricey (probably gonna be about 400ish for the belts and a headliner) but so worth it. those things are so annyoing anyways. it weighs alot too.

Where did you get the full rears? RSR's drop what? 2 inch?

I need a set of "dampners" to go with my free Tien springs.

if you get the yellows they are all full shocks in the rear. tirerack had em about a year ago thats where i got the fronts. bought the rears used w the RSRs

nice update, i love the last pic. that cressida is indeed pure win.

as for the manual belt stuff....holy s***!!! $400???? thats insane! i know an easy way you could save $380, buy nx belts. i paid like 15 or 20 for mine and they will go right in nicely with minimal work

or find one from canada. one of my hatches is canadian, and they are just baller enough to do the gauge cluster in km, and they even used manual belts.

i couldve went that way, but id rather have the trim and stuff without the rails for the belts.

sorta like you getting type x aero. id rather not cheap out on this one. im not into fancy exteriors, im more of an interior slut.

yeah i hear ya, but check out splintercells thread, he swapped in manual belts without getting the jdm stuff. its possible to do very cleanly and all my panels will still be on

Post Title: Re: HB's build thread: better late than never (White Comet)

yea splintercell's is nice but im still set on it.

and the cressida is more than win; its probably my best buy evar

got the differential out today.. i sorta regret pulling it now since thats all im pulling; its gotta go back in before i drive it to my friends, shouldve just waited till after my bodywork when i dropped the subframe. its not fun to pull yourself. damn thing was a pain to get out, and when it did finally come down, it slipped and fell on my arm

im gonna have a nice welt there tommorow

do u know what those black wires comming from the seat belt control go to?

my guess is the motor for the antenna.

i was looking into getting an s2000 antenna to make it cleaner idk yet, im holdin off to see what my metal work costs me

you mean the seat belt control box under the center console? where do the wires lead towards?

nice update, yeah teh dif can be a pain, when helping my friend danny with his, we dropped the diff kinda on his chest. his shirt had a dirt mark in the shape of an output shaft

Post Title: Re: HB's build thread: better late than never (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 7:57 PM 2/18/2009

ya the black ones... they run back towards the rear of the car... the rest of the stuff goes under the dash, so ill probably just remove as much as i can and cap them off for now (im too lazy to pull the dash before im ready to swap ) i removed everything seat belt related but i still have those 3 black wires... are they related to the grounds? or are they for the antenna motor. without that stupid control box i dont hear the annoying sound of my broken antenna trying to move anymore

Post Title: Re: HB's build thread: better late than never (hbpignosePA)

Sorry bro i am not really sure...

When doing my install i just unplugged things that needed to be unplugged and let them sit where they were installed.

When i mess with one wire i will be messing with all of them at the same time, Kinda like one big electrical step i guess haha.

Ghasty

rutters HQ (its a dairy farm that runs retail stores)

im guessing some markets would have it, think fish markets

was about 2.20 a pound or 12.50 for a 5lb bag

i used 5 bags total. not the cheapest thing but it does the trick. i actually nicked the metal in some spots just using a chisel

I need to get some, but I'm not sure where to get it at. Doing it all by hand I've put about 4hrs into it and I have all the rear hatch area and some into the rear seat. Its horrible. -_-;

Once you bought it how did you apply it?

just open the package, spread over the area (WEAR GLOVES!! it will burn you if not)

you will hear it start cracking in a few mins..

let it "melt" or dissolve

go to town with a hammer and chisel

Yo hb, I pretty much did the same exact thing to my trunk area of the car not too long ago (used the black and decker power drill with a wire brush thing too.), anyways where would one be able to get dry ice? I tried taking the sound deaden...er(?) stuff off with the wire brush and that was a big mistake. Just sprayed sh** just about everywhere

Keep us updated on your progress ...im actually looking at this thread for reference if you couldn't tell already

because hours of work and 50 dollars on dry ice is a small price to pay for a couple pounds of weight loss.

when u put the diff in the casing theres spacers on each side of assembly where the output shafts go

a thick one and a thin one... i cant seem to find the thick one

its huge idk y how the hell i misplaced it

does monday work for you to get those pieces i need from the black car?

thanks.... its more of an issue with rust as the reason im takin the sound deadening out. i will lay some fat mat when im done, but not as much as WC... i dont mind the noise but i dont want to roast in the summer w the heat from the transmission

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: 240sxFTW at 3:37 PM 3/2/2009

sorry for the pretty newbish question but why do you remove the sound deadening? less weight? And when you do so does it make a huge difference in the loudness of the inside of your car? slap me if you wish

Post Title: Re: (240sxFTW)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 6:54 PM 3/2/2009

alright well i covered it a million times but obviously you are slow

im removing it because i have rust.

im replacing it with new material

how do you not get that "sound deadening" it blocks the noise from suspenison travel, motor, transmission, exhaust etc and absorbs the heat from the mechanical aspects of the car

meh, its not that loud.
plus having everything white bare metal is bad a**.

hb is doing it for a specific reason though.

looking forward to the next update. let me know if everything worked out

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:34 PM 3/6/2009

alright small update:

i reassembled my diff after cleaning the housing and painting it. needs some touch-up spots but overall its pretty good.

helical looks great in the pumpkin, and should feel nice with my test drive on my way to my friend's for bodywork.

to those asking how hard the swap is, is simple once you get the pumkin out. its putting it back on thats a pain in the a**. i managed to get it by myself, but a second set of hands would've been nice. you gotta line up the two axles first, due to the way the lock together. i made the mistake of trying to bolt it to the subframe first.

tommorow i need to tighten everyting up back there and ill be good to go. I was running late to work.

the diff in the car

heres a shot of the drivers side floor, with my wiring finished until i pull the dash. its basically without the US seatbelt wiring and all that junk goin to their control box.

So what do you plan on doing with that rust on the rear well? Cut it off and patch it? btw I almost got all my sound deading out without dry ice. haha ughh

Post Title: Re: (Future_gohan)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:45 PM 3/6/2009

which spot?

cutting it out and welding in patches.

its goin to my friends tommorow...

hes gonna do most of it, im gonna probably drop the gas tank, and rear subframe and take it home to rebuild it while he does my welding work.

ill help him when i get time, but he just asked for a timeframe and will have more access to work on it a little at a time.

I like your choice of diff colors. I'm glad I'm saving my hlsd. Did you get yours from ebay like most of us? lol. When I got mine it came with some JDM candy!
Awesome job on the sound deadening removal. That was down the road on my long list.

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:54 PM 3/6/2009

nah, i got the diff from a nico member while back; then the output shafts from ebay for less then jspec has em.

i didnt get no candy... but if you look at my output shafts it looks like they have some madd tyte JDM lettering

argh it will be clean when im done, just gonna be longer than i want.

you gotta get back in the game man... u know you want one

the one where your seatbelt bolts into, I think thats what it was. lol It looks like an evil spot to patch. lol

All my rust on my red one was on the floors, i was happy the wells wernt rusted out, idk how i'd patch it. lol

ooo WC hooked me up with that spot off his old hatch

as bad as the rails were on that car, the floors were pretty solid

go figure

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 10:25 AM 3/7/2009

that car defied physics with its rust. the rocker panels (where i need) are solid too

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 3:46 PM 3/7/2009

no pics today (im lazy)

got the car to my friends, where its probasbly gonna be for about a month till i finish everything. i found more rust. above the muffler the rail is shot

jeff, do u know if the forward drivers side subframe mount on the old car is solid? mines rusted to hell - that bolt that comes down.

i may head over tommorow to snap some pics. The gas tank and rear subrframe are at my house, and will be torn down this week.

That spot was shot to hell in my red hatch also. Most are. :[

next time im over at the car, i'll have to crawl under and start checking it out

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)

its cool, u cant see the bolt unless you pull the subframe.

i know ur prob not ready to do that, but next time im in lanc (few weeks maybe?) id def give u a hand with it.

im gonna probably go over tommorow and get a few pics so everyone can see wat im facing, and clean up the garage before i start disassembling my subframe.

the only spot thats rusted is the actual tapered bolt

idk how the hell that happened?

but if i cut a square around it with the floor, i should be good.

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)

Ill drive out and pull em tonight for 500$ a tooth, ive got a 1/2 gallon of cheap whiskey right here beside me to numb the pain during pulling and some paint thinner that i used to clean to parts with but should work good to clean out the wounds so they dont get infected! deal?

too bad i havent touched my subframe yet... hehe ill get to it this week, a lil tommorow; and then more wednesday and thursday provided i feel alright (getting my teeth pulled tuesday) once hes done, ill undercoat it, and get it all back together

and now for the sexiness....

drivers rear wheel well

spot WC gave me.. lookin sweet

small spot behind the seat mounts.

drivers floor where the pedals sit... that hole was huge

its comming together and my friend definately hooked me up with his skills

haha no problem... hes honestly not a body guy; he has just had alot of experience welding with various jobs. currently he works with a steel fabrication company. I can let you know if he would be willing to help you out; hes just a friend of our family, but hes real nice and always up for a project. He just got done building a cage for a kid's drag firebird a few weeks ago.

id like to see your progress greeneyes, your keeping us in the dark

i just sent you a text about it... lol well im gonna wait a week or get a few things in order first... its in the back of a car lot; looks like they are gonna fix it up but; ill see... i dont even have the room for it

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 5:33 PM 3/24/2009

alright ive been slackingbut heres an update.

i disassembled the rear subframe; and today dropped all the arms off at a shop to get the bushings out. they didnt have time to start it today; but will call me when its done (hopefully by thursday)

so i started working on the subframe about a week ago, burning the metal bushings out. This job is a PITA; if you got the cash id pay someone to do it.

the fire!!!

i thought id make it interesting and light them all at once still took well over an hour or more, and theres still rubber left.

the paint on the subframe is tough to get off, im gonna have to use some paint stripper and then prime it before i paint it as well. i also gotta get those pesky collars off... SOOO i gave up on it for now.

then i started cleanin up the gas tank. this thing had years of oil and grime on it. bout an hour or so of wirebrushing, brake cleaner and it is clean enough to eat off of.

i noticed this is loose, should i replace it? i think its just the breather hose

i was contemplating spraying it silver, but thought it would show dirt too well.

after 3 coats of paint: (not dry, and still might do one more)

in between coats i took a look at the drivers side latch on my cressida that is all messed up. didnt figure it out yet, but also pulled out all the seats to clean the interior up a bit. i cannot stand nasty interiors

this sums up how gross the previous owner was

thursday's list includes:

tightening the koni dampeners, as well as respraying them. painting the strap for the gas tank, painting the axles touch up the rear differential, attempting to make more progress on the subframe, and hope i get my arms back so i can start painting those too.

ordered my balljoints today as well; should be here tommorow, then need to order a few odds and ends (bolts that are FUBAR etc) and i should be ready to put it back together

But good job looks like the rust is fun!

Post Title: Re: (Future_gohan)
Posted by: White Comet at 7:14 PM 3/24/2009

nice work, i'm liking the gas tank. what engine enamel did you use, semi gloss?

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 7:17 PM 3/24/2009

might be gloss i dont remember....

is it bad if that hose is loose

ie i can wiggle the hell outta it?

u get my texts w those pics of the s14?

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 7:24 PM 3/24/2009

yeah i posted about the s14 in my build so as not to clutter yours. i don't think its a big deal if you can wiggle that, but to be safe you can throw a new clamp on it and tighten it down

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 6:36 AM 3/26/2009

crappers.... i was gonna get an early start before class today (only got one) but i have a huge accounting test.

so imma studyin this morning. and i dont really want to get ingrossed in it this afternoon for an hour or so since i work at 3.....

douh

maybe friday after classes, but again i only have an hour or two before id have to clean up and get ready for work. Sat morning for sure ill be workin on somethin; whether it be the rest of my suspension, or starting the undercoating.

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: Didderson at 4:45 PM 3/26/2009

If you were talking about the hose itself being loose I assume it's supposed to be snug. We all know petroleum eats rubber over time so maybe it has seen better days. But in the pic, it looks like you're asking about the hose outside the hose connected w/ a clamp. That is just some protective foam that doesn't need to be replaced. It is just there for protection.
I usually remove things like that for weight savings lol. In this case you're probably safe to because of that small plastic inner fender piece that goes there. Most are made of a foam material that only collects water or oil and gets heavier .
I removed a lot of them on my friend's 1990 talon tsi. They were gross anyway!

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)

i cant wait to get back on the road.

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 10:36 AM 4/2/2009

update time!

well the shop i dropped my arms off at is dicking around with them, i only got half of them back end of the month for inspection, and the guy actually workin on em was sick two days this week so alas i didnt have much to work on.

started cleaning the arms, kunckles etc i do have... but no pics- ill wait till its all done

then it all goes right back to get the new bushings pressed in.

the subframe is putting up quite a fight too with the collars, and im realizing i shouldve paid a shop to do it (i dont mind hard work but its rediculous)

NOW what i did do today.... drove out to my friends to get started prepping the underbody for truckbed liner.

hes almost done.... till i found another spot i used to like mudflaps

heres some more of his work... these both apparently were a real pita

new section of the rail, right by the curve on the drivers side. apparently theres three frames inside each other, so it was a b**** to bend each section to fit but it looks fresh.

of all things to rot, i had a subframe bolt that was 1/3 as thick as it was supposed to be... it was desintegrating so i went to the yard sat and had the guys pull out the pin; cost 40 bucks and i didnt have to break a sweat plus they gave me half the floor.

mike did a great job getting it set without hacking it apart

and heres what i spent 4 hours on this morning... got the spare tire well, and most of the drivers side done; but i probably need at least another 8 hours first time i used an angle grinder with a wirebrush... next ill use the drill mounted ones to get the hard to reach stuff... then probably some 60 grit mounted on blocks to rough it up before i clean it off and start applying the truckliner w a brush

the last few updates didnt get much love... wheres the feedback nico?

friends w mig and tig welders FTW

Post Title: Re: (StandardProspect)
Posted by: Didderson at 11:07 AM 4/2/2009

Hey man your friend does great work on the rust patching! You might want to think about drilling a small drain hole in the frame rail though, not sure if water would sit in there (can't tell from that angle).
Reinstalling the subframe is easy! Well if your car is near the ground and you have a hydro jack (install the diff and put the jack @ the diff)...

Mudflaps that don't keep mud out? Fail.

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 11:30 AM 4/2/2009

yea i was thinking of doing that... there are the drain holes in the back and front of the patch... and obviously it didnt work anyways cuz it was destroyed...

lol

yea the subframe is simple to put back up

its just time consuming to redo all the arms and do the bushings.

my goal is to have it drivable after easter break (next tuesday) or the next sat at the latest... then its just the interior left (which wont take long) and at the very least i can at least drive it

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)
Posted by: White Comet at 11:35 AM 4/2/2009

alright so i got some work done on the suspension arms since i got them back...

i will probably get them back to the shop to get the new bushings pressed in tuesday

used aircraft stripper on the arms, it takes the paint off nicely

before paint

this is only one coat but you get the idea....

and some other goodies cleaned up

man I'm not looking forward to grinding all that crap off my undercarriage either

if I can make a suggestion if you're going through all the trouble to do that hit it with a coat or two of epoxy primer before you undercoat it, provides a good base and keeps out moisture

i probably will prime it, but does it matter what i use?

i was gonna use somethin outta a rattle can (i dont have a spray gun) on the entire bottom before i put the bed liner down. im sanding off mostly just the old undercoating, but some spots theres bare metal showing so...

well epoxy primer is better than the stuff in a rattle can but you might be able to find it that you can brush on I'm not sure...I've talked with some pro painters and browsed a few hot rod forums and they all swear by it so I'll probably go that route b/c yes the north east sucks for eating away at our cars

Hey man i figured it out.

It was so simple!

I was just trying to get the fender off and it was easier to just take the bumper off first.

Haha, u were the first person i saw that was online.

Thanks for being on standby though man!

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 6:48 PM 4/8/2009

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 7:06 PM 4/8/2009

already told you where to find very cheap manual belts lol. but good luck with that, i'm sure it isn't easy to find em in blue. i could have sworn you had black interior though, but maybe i'm crazy.

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 7:28 PM 4/8/2009

yea.... i know i hate to cheap out on it now; i COULD always look for canadian belts too...

it HAS been a while since you've seen my car.... hell its been awhile since ive seen it

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 7:32 PM 4/8/2009

lol i guess so. it wouldn't be cheaping out, if you get the nx belts you can use your stock panels.

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)

might do it as a temp fix.... but i already go the headliner so meh

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 10:57 AM 4/9/2009

well...

i am stupid

my panels ARE black- its been that long since ive driven her; i always assumed it was a dark blue cuz my seats/carpets are blue.....

but

they black

so im orderin them soon (i gotta transfer moneyz)

update?

got my arms back w bushings pressed in- only 220 for the labor of removal and install (oo and new balljoints)

SPL said they are shipping my rucas TODAY (finally)

umm the subframe has all four bushings/collars out (worst job ive ever had to do on the car- its a b****) and i started prepping it for paint

got more sanding done- tommorow i hope to finish that mess (should be able to)

plans:

SAT- lay down the undercoating, possibly paint the few pieces i have yet to do either sat or sunday

reassemble the subframe minus the RUCAs monday

install the following sat- then its just paint the interior (order) and install my sound deadening and put the interior back in; do some temp paint for the few panels that got bodywork and im set!!

its commin together!!!

i left my camera at home or i wouldve gotten more pics..... def take it along tmw

stay tuned

AND its pretty much perfect

ill get some pics up tommorow as i finish up the subframe and few bits im painting

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 11:14 AM 4/14/2009

ok so i didnt get anywhere on the subframe as you can see

well the collars are out, so i just gotta sand and paint and its good to go.

so as some know i went to look for a fender for jeff-(if it wasnt for that i probably wouldnt have went)
found an untouched SE hatch in the yard got some goodies

theres the fenders guys.... the drivers on the bottom is bent a bit but its great otherwise.

MY LIP

also got a perfect overflow tank- ill probably sell it

all my arms back from getting bushings and new balljoints pressed in.

some need paint touch-ups

still planning to have this put back together so saturday i can get everythin back on the car.

i ordered new rear cailpers today too (mine are fubar) and some misc stuff from nissan. ill order my seatbelts tmw and then im DONE!! for now

oo and my RUCAs and fatmat should be arriving today, but i gotta leave for work soon

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 11:32 AM 4/28/2009

alright so i havent updated but i got alot done. basically im waiting on new subframe risers from PBM to raise the subframe back up.

and ive been helping tom (didderson) get his car finished while its at my house

the pinapples are too loose if you take those sleeves out like WC suggested idk how his fit in there but its scary loose on mine.

heres the subframe mostly done:

should go up sat and then im done!

but the real progress has been on the car itself. Finished the undercoating two weeks ago over easter (didnt have a camera and it wasnt fun so)

then onto the interior love- painted the floor (totally rushed it so it looked like poo so no pics

but then laid some fat mat, not even an entire 50 ft2 roll i dont mind some noise.

got the gas tank lines back on, had trouble manuvering it into position with just a jack (so its suspended there for now)

then placed the carpet back in, only downside for me is the hump where the stock belts go cuz they arent there anymore

swapped out the headliner- might have to tear it back out thursday i forgot to remove the US spec bracket for the A pillar- which i dont have due to the company i chose to use not sending JDM A-pillars so now i have a gap ill get it sorted out eventually

US spec headliner is for sale locally

ended up being too dirty and got too involved so i missed my class today o well

as i left it today- im so close to the end i can smell it

You've been doin' work man holy crap. I didn't expect a full underbody paintingg, but nice job; looks really clean.

Post Title:

the bushings might have fit tighter if you left the inner metal rings in...

Post Title: Re: (mrgreeneyes)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:36 PM 4/30/2009

yea those were collars should have stayed in; jeff assures me this isnt the case but im pretty sure you are supposed to have them in for the poly bushings

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: White Comet at 9:39 PM 4/30/2009

i still think my car's magic then, cuz my bushings were snugger then your tightest and then only got firmer when compressed during installation.

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:48 PM 4/30/2009

its cool man, the PBM ones actually raise the subframe so it will make it a tad lower- helpful since i dont have height adjustibility.

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)

As long as hood pins dont destroy this one you can actually enjoy it.

why woudl i want to spend twice as much as the es bushings and go through the hassle of dropping the subframe again? why would everything take my til july anyways?

Eh sorry jeff I was just being dumb. By the time you install your t28 turbo you'll have bought something else to install before you drive it. It seems to be an incessant cycle lol.

I was just pointing out my observation. Its nice to see you stick to ur guns w the bushings u bought. Would b nice to compare em.

Post Title: Re: (Didderson)
Posted by: White Comet at 10:50 PM 4/30/2009

yeah i'm curious to see how the risers feel but dropping the subframe more then once is not for me the car would be running in 1-2 weeks if it wasnt for the t28. the front end is painted, the t25 woudl have been installed since the elbow and hot pipe came in. all thats left is get an inline fuse and distro box, pick up my moog endlinks and install front cusco sway bar, install driveshaft and headlights, have bov flange welded on, run vac lines and avcr then get gauges and intake pipe. after that its time to start up then put the dash and seats back in. it seems like a lot cuz i itemized everything but theres not much left to do, the t28 is worth waiting for though, lol i plan on being done in time for the great north american s chassis meet june 7th. sorry for the threadjack josh

Post Title: Re: (White Comet)

my PBM risers came a day early so they are in the freezer to compress them for tommorow

i got most of the interior done, just need to bolt some of it down, my friend john is gonna transport my subframe to the car tmw morning (gotta have a few friends with SUVs lol)

and then then its just bolt it up and good to go

should have two large updates the two days and be at the alignment shop thursday

stay tuned

update time!!!!!!!

alright so today my friend john stopped by w his mountaineer to take the subframe to the car; and i installed two of my PBM subframe risers.

the back bushings are not in because they slide out till they expand, so ill just install them when i am ready to raise the subframe up.

the arms need to be eyeballed for alignment and torqued down and im good to go.

also i need to install the new rear cailpers, and lines (all stock sorry nothin baller back there) thats all tommorow's project

fake mock up shot

well saturday and today i got alot done on the interior.

180sx seat belts and panels are installed, driver's seat, almost all the trim is in place, and cleaned up.

couple cool features; the o s*** handle on the drivers side (jdm passenger)

its fun to hold on to it getting in and out lol

alright ill shut up now enjoy the clean interior!!

discuss.....

back tommorow after classes (hopefully mike will be around to mount up the subframe and then its time for a spin.

alignment is thursday

that is all for now

supposed to have an alignment at 8AM

not gonna happen

left today rather frusterated that im not done

sorry had to whine a bit

off at 7:20ish to finish before my final at 11

due to me rushing i didnt snap step by step pictures but i have some loose ends to tie up that i will most likely get to Wednesday after my last finals before SUMMER and ill get some pictures there.

thanks for all the support to both my lanc friends and all the kind words; and again ill get some finished pictures up this week to show the goodness and finally right a review of my accomplishments

AHHHHHHHHHH ! ! ! ! !

It looks so beautiful on the inside!

I am so glad you went with the JDM seat belt conversion and JDM headliner! ! ! !

I love it! I actually smiled when i saw it!

With the way it looks, feels and works. DO you think it was money well spent? ( i thought it was) And the Oh shizzz handle is nice as well! It is going to be very convenient when we are low low low ^^

Sorry i have not had any updates but after seeing you do the under coating, I think i can save a few pennies to get that out of the way at least!

Looking good bro, I am loving it!

One Love,

Ghasty

but i havent had a chance to address my fuel issue since didderson has had his car in my garage.

its all good he should be finished in the next visit

any updates?

Post Title: Re: (omega8bit)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 5:23 AM 5/21/2009

well didderson is picking his car up today, which is why i havent been able to finish my stuff.

i found my fuel leak, unfortunately its both of the hard lines that are corroded near the back of the car that is the source of the leak, so im going to have to replace the lines.

ill probably have an update tomorrow when i get the car back on jack stands

Post Title: Re: (hbpignosePA)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 12:25 PM 5/29/2009

alright guys and gals it been a while. So after "finishing" my car i realized i had a fuel leak. i would leave a small puddle everywhere i went and the smell of gasoline was far worse than its ever been. (alot of 240 guys complain about this it seems)

so i checked over my rubber lines and didnt appear to have any cracks. well here was the problem. Water got into the clamps of the hard lines and rusted them out up in the subframe region.

a total pain in the dick.

so i looked around a bit at different options, but had a time restraint because my winter daily beater (the cressida) is overheating probably due to a bad waterpump.

i went to NAPA auto parts and bought 4 5ft pieces of brake line that was 5/16th diameter.

bought a cheapo tube bender, and a flaring tool and went to town.

now what you need the flaring tool for is to cut a tiny section of the end off to remove the brass fittings that you would use for the brake line.

unfortunately i had to use two pieces with a small section of soft line connecting the two under the car. I didnt think about it at the time, but i shouldve just cut the section that was rotted and made a small section from what was bad.

the tubes are not exact so remounting it was a b****. It is a bit crooked but securely mounted. i think ill take some measurements next winter and try and make more exact bends.

replaced the fuel pump, and all the rubber lines and have ZERO leaks and no smell

here is the undercarriage that ya'll never got to see finished.

all i need now is to tighten the koni's more since im rubbing tire (its a 60 series tire so next time ill get a shorter sidewall) and a realignment.

then some paint touch ups, wash and wax; and im ready for a great summer

this is the end of the first stage of my build, next winter if money allows ill do a swap and more rust repair in the bay. I probably will update with some cruise and meet pics throughout the summer

thanks for the support nico and enjoy the gorgeous summer weather

Hey I was wondering if you ever went through with purchasing an sr20 swap. I saw your thread about bestofjdm.com and was wondering if you went through them. Im thinkin of the swap and they are priced well....but its iffy.

thanks,

Post Title: Re: (NewYorkCoupe)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 9:42 PM 8/28/2009

well now way to search man.

i decided against an SR swap. i recently picked up an s12 hatch that im building now (almost halfway done) and then i got big plans for the 240 when im done.

don't want to reveal them just yet but this thread is far from dead/ over its just been on a summer break

good luck if you use them, i know there's elite JDM in philly who are good sellers so i hope something works out for you

cheers and welcome to NICO

Post Title: Re: (Ghast)
Posted by: hbpignosePA at 6:33 PM 8/31/2009

ok guess an update for anyone that cares.

the 240 is officially off the road for now.

the KA will come out to go in its new home (the s12) and the rust repair can begin on the engine bay.

after that is taken care of (probably by winter/ early spring and if money is good ill unveil my plan to all of nico and not just the local guys.

so here she is as she sits

KA ready to come out soon

and the rust

yes but its so worth it to take care of the rust....

id rather repair the car than scrap it and find another shell

its not gone just sleeping i got big goals for it; new installment will begin mid winter/ early spring

drftboy:
Engine is from
S30 (s31 for 280z?) chassis datsun Z son. Josh's is a 2.8L (Hence L28 engine code yo) but it was non turbo before the teardown.

Going to sound so sick... just balls to the wall man I have to stop thinking about it. But srsly, classic engine in a sweet suspension geometry car... win.

pretty much right tom, except all the z's were s30s till the zx's came out in 79 and it is referred to as the s130

the l series is found in the z's untill the 300zx's came out and are all fundementally the same, with different stroke, bore and heads respectively

im building a hybrid motor with an earlier block and this turbo P90 head. shooting for 300ish HP w a holset turbo and stand alone to start.

the stock turbo was rated at 180 on a mild 6 or 7 non intercooled.

i already had the block, found this and was like screw it im gonna do somethin a bit different

My god! Uncharted Datsun engineering. You got big plans and big dreams Josh.

Too bad both of us barely have any time to get our cars completed.

I seem to remember you saying you might have your suspension setup for sale soon. Any idea when? I'm eying Bilstein's pretty hard but will hold out for a good deal through the winter.
