Post Title: disable park requirement for GPS use and video playback?
Posted by: siehead at 4:00 PM 6/13/2008

So by now we all know that in order to put a new route into the GPS (in the US version) the car needs to be stopped, and to watch a video via the input, the car needs to be parked.

I read in an earlier post that there is a way to go about disabling this feature in some other vehicles, something by the way of removing a sensor that is activated once the car is in park.

Does anybody know more about this or is anyone willing to take this challenge on? Being able to use all the car's features while moving would make it a much better vehicle, particularly for my passengers.

Thanks!

First of all, doing so may be illegal in some locals, so you need to check and find out if it is legal for you to do this or not. That being said, a simple search for DVD disable using the search feature will produce results for a G series. There should be little or no difference.

Nico's policy is that you use any information regarding disabling the park override on the DVD at your own risk.

Doesnt the G series use a DVD for NAV where the EX is Hard Drive Based? I dont know if that would make a difference or not, but it might.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP here. I was assuming that he wanted to be able to use the DVD and load the Nav on the run. If he was asking something else, my bad.

Actually, there is no DVD capability in the EX ... CD only.

I think what it is we'd all like to be able to do, is to use the AV inputs in the center console to plug our external dvd player/laptop/ipod into, and be able to watch it on the main screen while on the move.

There is a full picture guide of how to do this on the '08 Armada/'08 QX56. I am not sure if it would work the same on the EX, but I know the Nav system and everything is the same between both vehicles.

Yeah,
I would love to be able to use all the features of the car while driving.

I have never disabled a system before and this is my first in-car navigation system, but I do understand electronics. Its kinda strange how it works. The car doesn't have to be in park, just stopped. If you press the "Dest" button while driving, the "Address" option will be greyed out, but if you happen to stop (fully stop) at a light, you can now click on the option. I also tried just fully appling the break, but that didn't work either, only after the car is fully stopped can you use all the functionality. Which makes me wonder if it is linked to the speedometer measurements. If so, I would think that would be a lot harder to disable.

Either way, I would love it if some new how to, or were actually able to get all the features while driving.

Actually, not only do you have to NOT be in motion, but the E-Brake needs to be on as well.

See you're wrong. I don't know about the DVD function with the RCA inputs, because I have not used that yet. But simply by coming to a stop at a light I have access to all the features of the Nav.

While I'm driving, I can be on a screen that has greyed out options (can't access them while Driving). And then when I come to a stop, no E-brake applied, they no longer are greyed out and I can continue pressing buttons until I hit the gas, at which time they are greyed out again.

Gesemail is absolutely correct wrt to using Nav. Stopped is all that's needed - nothing to do with E brake

Posted by: Gesemail at 5:52 PM 7/6/2008

So Chichi,

Do you have any guess on how the system knows when or when not to disengage functions?

Do you think it could be linked to the speedometer measurements?

Post Title: Re: disable park requirement for GPS use and video playback? (Gesemail)
Posted by: sluday at 12:22 AM 7/7/2008

It either has to with the speedometer or the gps. I think certain buttons gray out when the gps senses movement. This is my first car w/ gps and I have zero complaints about certain features being blocked out when driving. There is so many things to play with on the car when driving, it is already distracting enough. the most important features are voice activated like phone and destinations so that good for me. I also like the fact that the climate control and radio have manual control which to me is easier and faster to control unlike other in car gps systems that have you searching for the right menu to change station or climate. I bet all cars built in the next few years will have limited gps functions when driving for safer driving.

No more so than the others have stated-that it is apparently tied to movement. Stop and features "un-gray"
Honestly don't have a clue as to how to disable.

I know myself, and probably some other people would really love to know how to disable to park requirement also. Is there any way you can post the information or send me an email as well?

Thanks so much,

I just posted this on a different thread and thought I would share it here also:

Regarding the specific functions on the gps and audio box that turn off once the car is rolling I can't believe they did not design it so that the passenger seat would sense weight and allow those functions to be used at that time. I am in complete agreement that MOST of my passengers are somewhat capable of operating those functions.

And if their engineers were smart enough to design it in that manner I promise I would NEVER just accidentally put a heavy item of any sort on the passenger seat in a manner in which to fool the seat into thinking someone was sitting there.

Thanks Zozoka for taking the time to send it to everyone.

It is a few steps, but there are lots of pictures and it does seem doable. I have a friend that visiting me in a month that is really good with cars, and I'm just gonna wait until then, but if anyone tries, it would be great if you said how it went.

I personally have the Nav system, not sure if thats gonna be a big issue or not. I would think not, because I don't think they would change all their electrical systems for the nav and hook the sensor up to the GPS or something, but I could be wrong.

If anyone does this with a Nav system, please email out.

Thanks.

Huge thanks to Zozo for the message BTW!

New member here! Do you think I could bother you for a copy of the e-mail as well? Thank you very much!

Also, has it been determined yet whether the the movement feature (nav entry disabling) is related to GPS or some sort of a speed sensor? If you placed the vehicle on a Dynomometer and started rolling the wheels and the buttons "ungrayed", then it is definitely a GPS function.

Without having any information about this system on hand, I am inclined to think it is in fact a GPS function. But then again, I'm wrong a lot!

Then again, it may possibly be related to the rear view camera

Post Title: Re: disable park requirement for GPS use and video playback? (CaribMon71)
Posted by: Riker2k at 11:50 AM 8/6/2008

Hmm, my sense is that it's not a GPS thing, more gut feel than anything but I think this original topic was about being able to view video on the display using the AUX input in the arm console compartment.

If I recall the instructions emailed by zozo, (thx again BTW!!! ) they are shown for a non-nav equipped vehicle so there wouldn't be a GPS in that car and the video gets disabled when you start moving. Well, actually it does require a parking brake fix as well cause the video playback requires it to be on if I'm not mistaken.

Anyhow, point being, I'm fairly certain that my options don't grey out until I'm moving over around 3MPH or so, just like the backup / around-view camera will work if you are just crawling and then shuts-off as soon as you break a speed threshold. My guess is speedo connection...

Just a really crazy, naive question. Pretty sure I already know the answer, but has anyone asked the dealer whether we can request that safety bypass from the dealer? Just curious whether it may be like the Canadian medium-rare hamburger rule where they'll only cook it that way if you request it and sign a waiver...

I know, probably too good to be true but thought I'd ask. Personally, I can deal with the NAV input lockout but the Music Box album / artist list lockout when moving is RIDICULOUS. I can search my entire iPod while driving from the controls but can't look at the album list on the Music Box?

Sorry for the long post.

my email id is sougandh@gmail.com

I figured out yesterday that i could play video only in park mode (for the first time).. i dont have nav though... when i bought this car two months ago, i realized that my parking brake is broken as well as cracks in the rotor. I couldnt understand who can drive with parkng brakes on, but i guess this was the reason.. those who used the car drove it with parking brakes in order to watch the video!!..

thanks again for the help..

I am a new user b/c of this post. This issue is the single most frustrating thing about the ex35. How is it safer/better that i, as a passenger, have to use my iPhone while driving to find a local restaurant or map an address? I agree there should be a passenger sensor to allow them to use the nav. zozo, if you're still monitoring this thread, if you would be so kind, please email me the instructions.

and, if anyone has already done it on the ex35, please let us know any issues you ran into, success, or horror stories.

In the following thread, there are instructions on how to watch your DVD video on your front NAV screen in an Armada or a QX56, I am not sure how similar this is to the EX35. In the Armada as it is set from the factory, you must be in Park, with your E-Brake on, and not moving in order for video to be displayed on your NAV screen. This mod allows you to watch the DVD on your front NAV screen while you are going down the highway or on a family trip.

Wow, I never thought that so many people would be equally as frustrated about this feature as myself. Thank you zozo for the email that has been circulating, hopefully one day soon somebody can make the mod work on an EX35 and let the rest of us know the exact procedure.

Interestingly, I recently read about new GM vehicles which were going to allow internet use via the center console while driving. The GM spokesman simply said that he trusted the consumer to make the right decision about not using the feature and driving at the same time, and that passengers should always be allowed to use this feature. I wish infiniti had the same foresight.

There are a number of features on the EX35 that are disabled when not driving at very slow speeds or parked. I love my purchase and am glad that I own an infiniti, once this is remedied it will truly be a wonderful vehicle.

Thanks again for all the responses!

hello, I am a brand new Ex35 owner. I am going to make a proper thread and introduce myself as soon as i can get some pictures when it stops raining here. Could somebody please email me the instructions on how to do this. Also , if it was ever successfully accomplished on our cars. I talked to the dealer about doing this or how it can be done and he said that you had to make some adjustment to the brake sensor???? I am going to go back and possibly drill him some more, but i understand his dilemma. anyway. my email address is

I was attempting to perform the e-brake and vehicle speed sensor override on my 2007 G35x, and I had a few concerns. I can't shift the car into drive w/o starting it, as opposed to putting it into drive with just the accessory power on and e-brake engaged. So, when I do turn the engine on and put it into drive and then turn the engine off, an alarm sounds. Is there another way to perform this step without sounding the alarm? Or am I just a moron and doing this wrong - be honest.

And just for the sake of clarity, ground both the e-brake and VSS pins that feed the plug? Then insulate (wire nut or electrical tape) the exposed wires coming from the chassis?

Thanks!

You need to press the "Start" button twice without pressing the brake pedal, to put the car into "On" position without starting it. Then put the e-brake on, and you can safely shift it to "Drive". Now, press the "Start" button again, to turn the car "Off".

TY David, this is very easy process comparing to other mods i have done with my other cars.
simple question, would this mod allow me watch videos while vehicle is moving? or will it only allow me to use NAV grayed out buttons(along with the bth keypad options and more) when the car is moving? since I am only interested in playing my ipod's slide show when im driving.

Thanks in Advance David, TY for opening eyes of the EX noobs

Posted by: Gesemail at 5:10 PM 12/13/2008

So I haven't actually tried this mod, But...

I have an EX 35 with Nav+Tech.

I went to a garage and asked them if they could make my car think its not moving at all times. They told me the car has a giroscope that it uses to know when the car is in motion. They make parts that are connected in between the giro and the car's "brain" to fool it. They said they have parts for other cars, but one hasn't been fully developed for the new EX yet.
Not sure if they are 100% correct or not. The giro thing makes sense, but the question if anyone else can do it for me, I plan to keep looking.

Also just FYI, they told me the part is about $75 and then labor shouldn't be more than an hour. So, at least in my eyes, I would rather just pay someone to do it.

(completely not relevant, but they just had so many Christmas Icons I felt like I had to use one)

Post Title: Re: disabling parking requirement for viewing video playback& nav (Gesemail)

Hey Gesemail,

One of the wires being "modified" is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) line which sends a pulsed signal as an indicator of vehicle speed. Just download the PDFs and have a look.

David

It shouldn't effect your warranty, but when I did this mod on my Armada, I completed this mod using the relays, therefore there is an off (stock) position on the switch, and an on (mod) position. This way by the flip of a switch the vehicle can retain the factory wiring and position. I did a similar mod to my '04 QX56 and I never had any warranty issues.

I have done this on my Armada with Navigation. It has the exact same set-up as your EX35. You definately want to purchase the relay pack from Shane @ Tintmasters unless you can figure the relay thing out on your own, I know I couldn't, but with the relays already pre-wired with a switch, the mod takes about a half hour from start to finish. Let me know if you have any questions

BY THE WAY, this mod DOES NOT affect your MPG or Distance to Empty, or anything else like that on your Nav screen. It DOES allow you to input destinations while you are moving and watch video on your front Nav screen with the flip of a switch. If you switch from watching video back to Navigation, it usually only takes a few seconds for the Navigation to catch up to where the vehicle is.

You're VERY welcome for the instructions, gloa2000, though most of the thanks goes to zozo!

I appreciate your post because I've yet to do this myself and I had suspected the VSS was needed by Navigation but now you've confirmed it!

Two questions:
1. What specifically didn't work properly when the VSS wasn't connected?
2. What type of switch did you get? (e.g. type, part number, etc - whatever you have ... a pic might be nice too!) Timmbo mentions a "relay pack" but I wasn't really clear on why a simple switch wouldn't work.
3. Could you please confirm that now (with the switch off), you can turn the AVM cameras ON at any speed? (oops ... guess that was 3 questions! )

Cheers,
David

Someone has finally tried this?! Great!

Also have a quick question, as this has been bugging me since I got this car.....as well as being able to view video on the screen while driving, are ALL the on screen menu options now available while moving at >5mph??

The ones that are currently locked, which makes NO sense to me are:
Nav - if I want a previous destination that I went to more than 5 trips ago, I have to pull off the road and stop before I can put it in.
Nav - address book you can only see the first few, again, you have to stop to put it in.
Phone book - same as address book.
Traffic - When I'm sat crawling at 8mph on the hwy, and I pull up the traffic info, not all the info is displayed....it tends to miss off the bit about HOW FAR the current traffic queue lasts for, unless you stop completely and can then scroll! You can also only see a few traffic items on the screen, it won't let you scroll to see ones that are further away. I live near a couple of sets of long term roadworks, and they always take up the first few lines, so I really only get to see 1 or 2 items of interest.

They really didn't think some of this stuff out.

1. What specifically didn't work properly when the VSS wasn't connected?
- On Nav, car would steer but wont move forward when driving.

2. What type of switch did you get? (e.g. type, part number, etc - whatever you have ... a pic might be nice too!) Timmbo mentions a "relay pack" but I wasn't really clear on why a simple switch wouldn't work.
- I just installed simple switch from the Kragen autoparts, it was about to get dark so i just left it in my coin tray area.(Will work on it later to put Nissan/Infiniti switch on the empty switch area on the center console or left to steering wheel where AFS switch is.

3. Could you please confirm that now (with the switch off), you can turn the AVM cameras ON at any speed?
- Hmmm, I think I'm being offended here J/K.... I dont have TECH.... nor AVM...

[Picture of switch]
I decided to put the switch on the coin area(which i use it as...) for temporary, since it was afternoon it was about to get dark, and i had no tools to make holes to fit the switch.

Additional info might be useful.

-For me, the color of the wire and description in the manual matched, violet and red i guess, but be careful another reported theirs are differ.

-With switch on position, you can still watch video through the AUX when the car is not in motion and with the switch in off, you can watch whenever but reverse.

So I am not quite sure I get it. I have the navigation, so does that mean I have to turn the switch to on when using the navigation, and then turn it to off to watch movies while I drive? Is there a solution in which the navigation will work and videos play while driving without having to switch back and forth?

Also, can you provide instructions on how to remove the panel for units with navigation. I tried using the instructions posted but my dash area looks different and I don't know how to proceed.

Copied from the email I sent you.

Could you tell me how to remove the panel?

- I am not sure about which panel you are talking about but if you
meant the panel where the shifter is, then it was little tricky for me
to remove it but the whole idea was that i was too scared to break
anything on a 40k car, with little more force, you might be able to
take it apart from the bottom.

Also, I am considering buying the relay pack suggested in the forum to
make it easier. Do you reccomend that? I am not too worried about
the $50 if it makes it easier.

-If the relay pack has the function of switching on/off when it needs
to be, i would definately get one but I am not very sure if it has
that function.

Also, do I have to turn the switch to on when using the navigation,
and then turn it to off to watch movies while I drive? Is there a
solution in which the navigation will work and videos play while
driving without having to switch back and forth?

-As my last answer, i do not know, if i knew, mine would not have that
switch now....

I am toying with different options of what to install in my car. I
was toying with the idea of a mac mini loaded with movies or even an
evdo card and try to watch hulu in there but I don't think the speeds
will support it. What are you using it for?

-I use it as Slideshow from my Ipod, watch dramas from my ipod using
aux inputs, I also use it as my own screen of laptop when my wife
watches stuff from the back seat.

Welcome to NICO, NH2S!!

I vowed I wouldn't answer any more requests in this thread, but since you're new, I'll make an exception.

I have made the instructions and pics for this modification available from the 4th "STUCK" thread (visible on this page: http://forums.nicoclub.com/zeroforum?id=186). All interested members should access it from there instead of requesting an individual email.

HTH,
David

Hello Everyone,

I'm here to offer my "success" story.

I have an '08 EX35 Journey w/Nav + Tech Package.

I am not a gear head by any means. I wanted it to look nice and I didn’t want the chance of scratching something, so I brought the car to a shop to do it (had to actually call like 3 places to find someone to do it). I also wanted the switch to look really nice. Since I don't have AWD, I don't have the center button (SNOW) in the center counsel. I went to the dealership and bought the button to use as the switch to activate the relays. I have to admit, my no means is that the economical way to do it. The button, which is just plastic cost me $85 with tax, it also took a week to come in. The switch has 6 pins and came with no schematics. When I brought the car to the shop, I told the guy he would have to figure out what the pins were.

So.. after about 4 hours of labor, I went to pic up my EX. It looked great and as if it was factory done. The button works perfectly while i'm driving. Incase anyone is wondering, they charged me $200, but that included the two relays they used.

In reference to dividedhighw's question: No, you can not turn the cameras on at any speed. I was a little baffled by this. I don't understand what other input the cameras are getting to inform them that the car is moving. The only thing I can think of is either A) the cameras some how have another Speed sensor type input for safety reasons or B) that the cameras are getting the VSS data "before" the relay. By that I mean where ever we are cutting the signal of the VSS, further down stream the cameras have already gotten the data. I think B seems more probable.

So in summary I am very happy with my purchase, it looks great, BUT if anyone knows or figured out how to use the cameras at any speed that would be awesome.

Gerard

Thanks

First off, welcome fellow Wisconsinite to NICOclub! Glad to have you as one of ours newest members. Enjoy the forum!

Yes, this sure does work on the '09 Murano LE, I have personally completed the mod on an '09 Murano LE. Here is a link to the thread in the Murano Forum with step by step pictures:

Hey Timmbo. I took apart the center console and noted that number of pins in the back of my 08 non nav ex 35 differ than the ones on the wiring diagram. Any advice is greatly appreaciated.

Hello Everyone,

I implemented this mod, today morning. The 2 wires were pink and voilet for me and the mechanic who did it told me that it doesnt matter what the colors are. We tested the system and everything worked except that i started seeing the airbag lights flashing and the "Service Engine Soon" warning on my dashboard. Did it happen to anyone on this forum? Any idea what could have caused it? We grounded both the wires coming out from the plug.

Thanks
Sid

After i restarted the car for the 4th time, the "Engine Service" light went away but the airbag light is still flashing. Any clue anyone?

It sounds like one of the wires are incorrect. You should really make sure the correct wires were cut. Triple check all the pin locations. Don't worry about the color of the wires, it is ALL ABOUT THE PIN LOCATION! Done correctly, you should not have any "issue"lights. GOOD LUCK!

Once i did a reset on the airbag sensor light, it has not come back again.

Good to hear! Did you notice that your Speed Sensitive Volume no longer functions? Not a big deal, but it no longer works.

Didnt notice that yet but since you have pointed that out, the next time i notice it, i will know why it stopped working.

Figured I would mention it, you could always go back and install a switch there, that way you can switch from "Stock" to "modified".

New guy here with an '08 EX35 with the Premium Package (with Nav).

I have read through this thread with much interest.

Just to confirm: I am interested only in enabling those Nav options that are greyed out while the car is moving (don't need the video option). If I understand correctly, I need only to modify VSS pin 38. With the modification I lose my speed sensitive volume (which is okay with me), but there is no Nav delay or tracking problems etc...

Do I understand correctly or did I miss something?
