Alright guys i guess its time to break the news to the Public...
I purchased a 1991 240SX Hicas hatchback and I am converting it into a Time Attack car for the Redline Time Attack Series, Unlimited class. I am currently working on sponsors and the build process.
As it stands right now the car is completely gutted and ready to be built up into a fully prepped race car.
The raw tubing for the roll cage is ordered and will be arriving shortly. Soon after, we will be getting little suspension bits and engine goodies for this beast, but this is a budget car meant to win races, and not to look pretty. Anyway on to the pics.

Those are just some teaser pics for now. We have a fiberglass dashboard and some other goodies going into this car, but only time will tell how light and fast it will be.
This is where I need your help.. Since this is a NICOclub car, I have decided to open this buildup to the public. I will schedule garage days to get the car built in time and anyone who can tell the difference between a wrench and a screw driver is invited to lend a helping hand. I will keep this Thread updated with garage dates and locations (this car will be bouncing back between Connecticut and New Hampshire)
This car is deffinatly going to be a fun buildup and I can't wait to share it with you guys...
EDIT Buy stuff from the part out to help fund the build up!!

I would recommend keeping the interior as much as possible since it weights very little (except for the front seats) It's sad to see a car w/o carpet or center console.
If you plan to replace the dash I would recommend R-hand drive conversion. It will balance the car. If you don't believe me raise the car 2 inches from the back, you will see it tilt to the left side with no driver inside.

It is going to be totally stripped, any weight savings is good weight savings, we will be competing against the Dent Sport Garage 240 and other completely stripped and much better prepped cars, with drivers that have a ton more experience!! The RHD is pretty much not an option for this year, if we feel it is an issue it can be changed in the next season.
Car is practically rust free with the exception of the trunk, but that will all change. thanks for the nice comments and I hope to see you guys in October or at my house to get this car on the road by October!!

And the whole RHD thing, I've read a few interviews in the past where a lot of Japanese drivers prefer the LHD cars due to it being easier to shift.

rb is too heavy for time attack, car needs to be as light as possible...among other reasons
the plans for this car have been relatively set in stone for a few months now, so nobody needs to worry about ideas at this point

How equipped are the garages that this car will be at? The one I worked at before I left was pretty badass, and the owner is awesome, so we could probably work on it a little there, so long as the car isn't sitting in it for weeks at a time. It's located in North Kingstown, RI.

5 kg/mm Rear
15-way Adjustable dampers
I assume they use it (or something very close to it) on their company time-attack car.
If you are going all out on the suspension, I might also consider replacing all the other suspension components. SPL Parts is the company I had in mind for my suspension pieces and they use QA1 Teflon injected solid spherical bushings for all the endlinks. (They also used to have the load ratings for each part listed.)

I'm up for traveling. I just need a bit of a notice though. I have two tool boxes between work and home.. Pneumatic tools out the wazoo.. And plenty of sweat and blood to donate.
I also have Aluminum 30mm Z32 brakes that I 'may' be willing to part with.... we'll see.

Usually the people who say "why do you need that, you don't need that" tend to be people who don't have it, can't afford it, or never will get it or something along those lines lol.
The whole point of adding more things to a car (the right way) is to perfect a car and make it beyond anything else. At least that's how I look at it. Not what others want or have.

Well if you want to be a douche about it, I could argue the fact that bigger brakes add more unsprung weight, reducing the handling capabilities of the vehicle. They also add more rotational Inertia. If they aren't overheating and boiling the brake fluid, or producing brake fade, there is no point.
The point is, a set of Z32 Brakes with a good set of rotors should do just fine. Money saved by going with them instead of your baller 23" rotor 10 piston caliper setup could be spent elsewhere for a better value.

So, according to your post, bigger brakes make a car handle worse...
but then again you wouldnt put 14" Brembos on a stock suspension S13...
they would go on a fully prepared car to 'allow' for added performance.
And you need more than just 'good' rotors to keep from having brake fade... mostly it is the pad and the fluid responsible for brake lasting
quality on the track.
We run a Wilwood ultralite setup on our Race Car, with a set of Hawk Hp Plus pads typically, but if it is a road course type of race... Hawk HT10 or Hawk Blues with ATE super blue or Castrol SRF fluid. And in this case the brakes overall weight is less due to the 2 piece aluminum hat rotor design and lightweight 4 piston calipers...which means there is less rotating mass and unspring weight on the front of the car...
One other thing....bigger - better brakes, allow you to accelerate longer
and brake later in a turn, when done properly overall lap times will be faster.
And before you go hating...... the Z32 Alum. caliper setup should be fine to use, not saying that its not at all, simply stating that Racing designed brakes are going to be better suited to a "Track Car."
BUT, i do like the reference to a 23" rotor with 10 piston calipers... isnt that Buell Front brake almost 20" ???

haha, no idea. I meant to include brake fluid in that list I posted up there. But yeah, I agree that big brake kits are also made lighter as well (lower unsprung weight), as far as reducing rotational intertia... I'd have to see the 2 rotors side by side with raw data, so I can bust out some equations and see if that is true. I thought most light weight rotors shedded their weight towards the hub rather than the outer rim of the rotor. Either way, I'm sure its not THAT significant, I was just trying to make a point about cost effectiveness.

Fisrt off we got the engine bay and the door openings stitch welded primered and painted.

All nice bright and purdy. Leaks should be super easy to spot now.
Then the man with the engine showed up and droped off the super elusive Sr20 Gold top (all assembly required) trans ecu wiring harness clutch and god knows what else is burried in these boxes.

I'm just glad to see that this project is really starting to get moving! The car will be finding a new home in New Hampshire soon so commuting time between car and people will be a lot less than the 2.5-3 hours that it is now.

Friday night i get to my parents house and start to prep for welding the next day, Mark (the converted) and myself bust out some grinders and go at it, we finish that up around 10:30 PM and then we decided to do some quieter things, like pulled every wiring harness to make things eaiser, we finished removing the last stubborn bits of floor tar and just a tied up a few loose ends, we were done by say, 1:30 AM
Saturday 9:00 AM, we get the car and Quad ready for transport and we drive down the road, maybe 3/4 of a mile with the quad towing nothing but a shell on wheels, yeah we're rednecks. We arrive at a good friend Mike's House and used his mig welder, Mike has an array of toys including a

We arrive and setup shop, we were give some rules of the house (MIke is a Fireman) so we were told to not burn down the brand new garage. About 3 hours into welding we spraked a little too close to the fuel lines and Set a nice flame show in the middle of the beautiful garage, after a roll out of the car and a full big can of the Fire Extinguisher we were back on the road to finish up the seam welding.
Today SuperDorifto and Fznat arrived with the engine that you saw, incredibly clean and includes a ton of new parts that are just perfect for this build, these include a new: Koyo Radiator, Megan Racing DP, Clutch, Hoses, rebuilt head squared block, and a ton of little nick nacks. Thanks again WILL!!! Thi is deffinatly a step in the right direction. I can't wait until this thing is running and chasing down the DSG car... Someday, hopefully soon!!!

Since we decided to start this project we have been thinking alot about the car. It recently came to our attention that we have nowhere to keep the car over the winter! So to address that concern I've started an addition to my shed for it to live in and took some pictures.

Half of the floor frame sitting on the cross beams

Finally got the cage and the car together in the same place so that project started.
Dan tightening some bolts
From the look on Sean's face you'd think we drilled through the tire, but fear not NICO readers we're not that dumb (or are we?)
Sean proud that the main hoop fit and thinking the sunroof opening was somewhat cramped
Sean and his most prized Cummins banner
Getting jiggy with the chop saw (notice the safety glasses safety first!)
Well it kind of fits
That is level, but the better question... is the car level?
Fitting the second main diagonal
Dan and Amy showing off their graffiti talents
Dan removing the side impact beams because he loves us and cares about our safety
Some welding
If you know what he's doing tell me!
A little captain?
Dash made it into the car for a test fit
NICOclub, we'll even hold up your barn
Oh no a broken window! I love Sean and his funny looking faces
The easier way to clean it up
See we got most of it
Figured we'd take the winshield out to make welding easier
A windowless shell rolls back into the garage
What's this? Does NICO need ANOTHER silcamino?
Sean looking defeated seems to agree
But what's this?
Just kidding silcaminos are for sissy boys, real men take the whole roof off!
UH OH!
Sean taking a pretend spin in the 240
I just had to show him how we do it in Boston.
Nice pipe!
Tubing notcher was awesome
Look at that fit
A little mid-day exercise
Just look at that cage!
This welder is so much nicer than mine.
Such a fine car deserves a fine seat
So parts are finally starting to get up ON the car but we still have a lot of work to do!

we removed as much of the seam sealer as possible, and burnt off the rest when we welded.
the stitching doesn't really change ridgidity of the chassis all that much, it really just improves longevity of the chassis by keeping it all in one piece. this obviously isn't going to be a street car, so harshness isn't really an issue with us.

you are really just adding extra spot welds all around your car. IT really keeps the chassis from stretching and coming apart due to the stresses of racing and abuse.
what you can do is add new seam sealer after the stitch welding is complete and then obviously spraypaint to prevent your rust

This weekend we go to finishing the cutting on the cage, we took it out one last time to get it finish welded and painted. We removed any extra weight in the doors and put sheet aluminum over the door panel opening, and we also cleaned up the rest of the sound deadening. It was a pretty productive weekend with pics to come tomorrow.

MeanGreen, before we chopped the roof, we consulted with different race car builders and we decided it would be our best option. It wasn't just a ahck job(no pun intended) don't worry we are going to properly support the roof and we have a good body man in mind (cbcustoms)

I also believe in NICO and the oustanding work that has been started and pushed on by Dan and Sean on the Time Attack car, and this is my call out to you who have pledged parts, time, money, etc towards making this car a reality. There's an SCCA event here at Loudon this weekend, and I am asking why we aren't in it. Quite simple, we need help to get this car done. As for me, I am gonna do what I came here to do, which is be an extra set of hands for the guys, fab up some stuff, give some recommendations and learn a few things while I'm at it. I'm not the king of this; there's only one king and it ain't Elvis, Richard Petty or KT; it's Allah (I'm in the land of Live Free or Die, so I can say what I believe) and I am just grateful that I got here safely to work with the bros on this car (12 hours from the DC/Baltimore beltway; best time to escape that trap is no later than 0430).
Anyway, just get up here, please, and help make this dream a reality. Thanks!

Here's another thing, over 237 years ago, our country was waging a guerilla campaign against an oppressor who tried to tax us without representation and tried to force us to conform to the laws put out by that same institution. Some very brave men put it down on the Declaration of Independence, all the way down to their very lives (treason was punishable by death in the eyes of the English; these men who helped form our nation were traitors), and they set up the foundation for a way of life not known before in order to form a new society and government that is by the people and for the people. Now, take a look at what is happening today. Get involved with your government and the ones who are elected to represent you and vote. Let's take back our government and get this crap we're in behind us.

I'm here in beautiful Concord/Epsom NH, and it really is beautiful and it feels good to be around fellow patriots and people who believe in the goodness of people, regardless of the current state of crap our world is in. "Live Free or Die"... man, that's a great state motto, and one I truly believe in.! |
I used to play hockey in NH all the time as a kid.

I was at Dan's tonight with Sean to see what we need to do in order of priority while I'm here. We got a lot to do tomorrow. Again, if you can get up here and devote some time, parts and money, please do so. Dan's provided the place to do this work and Sean has put a lot of his own money into this project, as well. Dan's parents are very cool and very supportive of what's going on. Just a great group of folks who make you feel at home. I'll let Dan and Sean talk about what needs to be done, since this project is being led by them. As for me besides fabbing up some stuff, I'll be donating some new 17x9 rims and any other items that they need that I have spares of. Come on, guys! I know you wanna see your logos on that car! Let's get this car done!

Anyway, as was mentioned earlier, not much in the way of stuff getting done occurred, BUT when one is building something that is gonna be run hard and stressed out with loading and unloading, there's no time or room for slop. We're talking safety first and then chassis alignment in order to extract the most out of the suspension and power plant.
Again, I am most thankful to Allah and to my friends and the bros of New Hampshire and Connecticut for welcoming me and allowing me to pitch in with this project. As for now, New Hampshire is where it's at, and the time attack car is a serious project, so all of you who have pledged time, parts, money, sponsorship and other things, a big up token of sincere gratitude. For those who have made promises and such previously, please go through with them and let's make this exciting project an "all hands" effort. I'm in it to win it. That's the fighter/strike-fighter pilot's maxim, and I will go to great lengths to ensure it happens because I believe in the bros and in this car.

The working document (POAM) helps keep all involved persons/parties focused on the project. Any parts/services/pledges and who made them needs to be listed, as well. Make sure that you send the updates for the POAM out to all who are listed. Anything on paper carries more weight than just spoken word alone. It's a psychological thing. Nobody wants to be looked at as a non-player. Yeah, things do come up, but as long as things are communicated expeditiously, it makes things a lot smoother. Microsoft Project is a great tool to use to help you construct a POAM, and I am sure there are other tools out there to help construct a POAM.

That said, 17x9 is pretty small. Most successful teams seem to start at a 275 tire, with 285/30/R18's being popular for a smaller rolling diameter. The 275/40's will fit, but be slightly taller and not truly square.

| Higher offsets allow longer control arms to be used, reducing lateral wheel scrub on suspension movement/ turning. Unless you're making good use of that, it shouldn't be a huge concern, as track width ratio and overall tire size will have a greater impact on handling at the level I assume you'll be at. | Each track will put different demands on the car, for each track will differ a bit from each other. Just know in advance which compounds seem to be the best fit for each. Tire size and suspension dial in becomes so very critical as the car advances. |
Speaking of suspension, I noticed the aluminum spindles in back. No poly bushings?

a 275 up front on an s13 is a big deal, takes quite a bit of work, and anything wider than 9.5 inches wheel wise needs custom offsets, etc etc
s14's have it easy when it comes to the wheel/tire package

| That's why we have day before practice runs in order to "dial in" suspension and to see if the tires currently on the car will even help the car hook up at critical points on the course. datalogging is as simple as keeping a running diary of what was done at each track. You are right, the initial debut of the car will have nothing previously done as a benchmark. That's why we have communication and why we have pit crew. In summary, have fun, but again, "I'm in it to win it" Dan and Sean! |
For the most part, it breaks down to knowing the surface and condition of the pavement, rather than specifying track to track. I can pretty much guarantee you won't see as much variation from track to track as you will from different autocross (like Toledo, which has a directional grain to the concrete. Tons of traction in one direction, not so much in the other).
One other thing: Hoosier makes the A6 compound in a 275/35/R15 size. I'm not sure if the R6 is available in that size, though, but I know DJ McArdle from NY runs that on his CA powered S13. It might be worth looking into, especially if you never go beyond z32 brakes.

Even with all of the fancy tools, it will all fall back on the driver's ability. It's just like in fighter planes. We have all these neat state of the art components and we are trained to maintain flight within certain parameters. Some pilots will stay well within the safety zone of the flight envelope, and then there's those of us who will push it to the ragged edge just short of getting outside of it. Pushing it to the ragged edge takes confidence and experience, and theres no amount of datalogging that anyone could come up with to measure pilot or driver performance.
I've been reading up on a few dataloggers just to get current and that stuff is just really neat and would definitley benefit a driver and a team in so many ways.

I definitely hear you on the "it comes down to the driver" philosophy, but at the same time it's difficult to adjust a car based solely on a single driver's opinion (and almost impossible when two drivers are telling you different things!). Also, there's the reality that "feeling fast" doesn't always equate to being fast. For example, I like the car to have decent turn-in while trail braking through a corner, so I might raise compression damping up front for more initial bite. This in turn might feel great going into corners, but losing a point of pure grip through the rest of the corner could be slowing me down overall. On the other hand, without that intiial bite, I might be fighting the car too much to plant it into the turn, which kills consistency (and in the end, time).
The great thing about modern dataloggers is that you can distinguish between the car and the driver. It helps to get a real idea of what sections of the course you're consistently fast on and where you have to look to change something. For the above example, it comes down to looking at the log and seeing if my line deviates much, and making a decision of if I can change my "style", or if it's worth it to tune the car down. The downside is: it sometimes gives you too much info.
However, I don't see that as being necessary for a while. It'll take some time to work out all the bugs that inevitably pop up, and you'll be making some large overall changes in the beginning, while developing your driving (I'm not sure who your driver is, so forgive that assumption if it's incorrect). I just hope you have better luck than my friend's shifter kart from this year :P Even the simplest things can be a huge PITA.

Totally spot on that this is too early to be thinking of such things, since the guys won't know how the car is gonna perform mechanically and structure-wise. The whole point is to have fun and to explore the side of the S chassis that most just read about, as well as to develop personal driving skills. If I am off the mark guys, correct me!

| It's funny while reading this I was thinking shifter karts and then you mention it in the last paragraph! Karting is big here in Bahrain, as well as other forms of motorsport, and the guys who are into it are the ones who first exposed me to dataloggers. |
Those shifter karts are crazy, and TONS of maintenance. Prepping for a race is so involved, especially with open bearings, but generally you do coolant flushes, oil flushes, bearing maintenance, chain maintenance, and hope your carb is jetted right for the weather (and fine tune it while running). You'd never think of it just looking at one, untill you start looking closer.
Then you start to realize, you've got a lot of open bearings on the new suspension parts, and tons of work in an engine, as well as plenty of wear items (clutch, brake pads, rotors, etc) that need attention on a race by race basis, plus attention to EVERY mod you've done to the car (solid stuff = vibration = loose nuts/ bolts). If you've ever been to club races, you start to see how much there is to learn about reliability and maintenance.
Once all that is down to second nature, you can start tweaking
Anyways, I'll hopefully make it to the NH meet. I'm hoping to get together with a few of the "old school" ONE (240sx Owners of New England) guys afterwards. And on another note, I'm on my 7th year of 240's as well, since July.

Not entirely true my friend. You patched it up with beefy tubing though, it's fine now.
I do have to ask why you put the oil cooler in front of the intercooler. I'd favor it going above the intercooler because as it sits right now it's sort of an interwarmer at times.

That was the most convenient place to mount it and the lack of the tig in the garage means no welding plates or brackets on intercoolers and oil coolers, feel free to crutique away, anyone. But, are you gonna volunteer the use of materials and tools? ahh didn't think so.

If you compare the footprint of the oil cooler and the intercooler I think that you'll realize that the difference is minimal at best.

It's all good man. I'll apoligize for all of us. There's been quite a few "why the hell did you do that, your effing up the car" comments in this thread. I guess we have gotten a little defensive because there a few people who find it to easy to criticize how we are building the car and then cite completely irrelevant experience.
So while we do encourage and appreciate criticism because we know that there are other ideas that may be better than ours, it just becomes frustrating when people are just criticizing because they don't like what we have done. It's just hard to tell the difference sometimes.

While heat from the oil cooler may not affect the intake temp, you're still reducing the airflow through the intercooler, as well as the radiator. I've known a few SR owners who've done roadcourse sessions to experience overheating problems with an unobstructed FMIC blocking the radiator, so I'd think cooling should be a major concern. |
We're planning on doing some preliminary testing, but I do agree with proper cooling being a big concern! Most early 90's Nissan engines I know of have problems staying cool, and of course much more so when turbocharged as you know. We still need to fab up some ducting for it through the front bumper opening too so we'll see how it works out.

At the very least, I'd ditch the sectioned portion of square tubing and replace it with single bent pieces, although ultimately, with the other known weak spots in that chassis, you might just be better off with a new car.

I think what he was showing is the large amount of headroom that you can get in an S13. If you've sat in a Sparco Evo seat you'd have a better idea of how much headroom is there (your head wouldn't be much higher than the top of the seat).

| Upon closer inspection of the pictures posted, it looks as though you've cut into the lower frame rail, which combined with the floor and transmission tunnel (which has been cut out), provides a decent amount (if not the majority of) chassis rigidity. With the floor modifications done, I would be wary of passing it through a tech inspection, and I wouldn't be surprised if tech inspectors at any motorsport organization would share such sentiments. At the very least, I'd ditch the sectioned portion of square tubing and replace it with single bent pieces, although ultimately, with the other known weak spots in that chassis, you might just be better off with a new car. |
Your partway right, we didn't cut into the framerail just up to it. considering that there was just sheetmetal between the transmission hump and the frame rail, I would be hard pressed to see how cutting out sheetmetal, welding in a new subframe thats providing more support than the nothing that was there and then welding in new thicker sheetmetal to replace the thin spotwelded factory sheetmetal could possibly weaken the car at all.

I wasn't implying that you hadn't, but moreso that it was a viable reference.
As for the structural integrity, I'm sure it's possible to reinforce the insert enough to be stronger than the stock sheet metal. In reality, the cage should take a lot of the load off the frame. However, you're still placing an OEM load bearing structure in question by aggressively modifying it. It's another thing for a tech inspector to scrutinize, and for the most part, I'd be worried that it wouldn't pass tech.
I'll see if I can pass it along to some road racing tech officials and see if they can provide any objective input.

Their word was as long as the purpose of it was not to save weight or increase performance that it would be fine. They said that the spirit of the rule was to stop people from building underpans and things of that nature and that simply making a place to bolt a seat to was no problem at all. |
Thats good to know. It seems as though they're still sorting their rules, but that's what such clarifications are for.

Yeah, I noticed there was some back and forth stuff going on occasion and a bit of a defensive tone against most remarks. I'd just like to mention that anything I say is meant for the benefit of the build. I'd like to see this thing hit the track, so it was a concern of mine that it wouldn't pass tech. The other thing, above all, is I'd like to see this thing built safely.
The pics veilside180sx posted are of an S13 coupe. It's actually an open-track car as far as I know.

and here is the worst dent of any of the wheels

I think I could have dented that wheel worse by throwing a Nerf ball at it! So now we need some rubber to put on these bad boys. I think Sean and I have come to an agreement that Toyo RA-1's will fit the bill for now, 255/40/17 front and 275/40/17 rear.
Then it will be on to home made widebody/aero to cover those up and I think that if everything goes as planned we are going to have some impressive looking stuff to show you when its done.

Mustang 17x10.5 +24's cleared inboard on the S14. The S13 shouldn't be a problem. Since the tires you guys are running are a bit smaller than the ones I ran, you might be able to get away with a big pull. Not sure how much narrower the S13 is than the S14, though.

Yes they do, and if some bish hadn't hit you on the eve of your GT Live journey you too would have been able to drool on their car, actually they won the unlimited class matter of fact... they were jerks in person though. I went over to check out the car and they were like hey you can't be over here blah blah blah... could go right into the pits for the Porsche teams though. |
I can't say I would want someone particularly under foot, while working on a car at the track. It's a distraction.

some teams are more relaxed when prepping than others, its really a team by team basis...ive found the same thing
personally i wouldnt have a problem if somebody was just standing back and watching...but if im trying to prep the car for an event and somebodys sitting next to me asking questions it might be different
even then though, ive been invited to get much closer looks at some cars right before heading out then i wouldve expected...guys at PTG BMW let me check out their M3's at the glen 6 hour a few years back about 15 mins before they were heading out to pre grid while they were checking the engine and stuff...you never know really
actually in fact the car i looked at was the one that cartwheeled in the rolex series race at mid ohio last year

| Quote, originally posted by gtircanada » |
I drive RHD, i find it easier to shift with my left hand because of this it just takes time and practice but im sure it is the same after practice both ways. |
Yeah, same is true for both, the only real advantage I see that is true for anyone is RHD gives you alot more free room for the turbo set-up. With an RB I would love to go RHD if only for that, my downpipe already rubs the steering shaft.

after talking to AEM we have decided to go with their EMS for sheer versatility and power. After playing with the software I really like it, from the basics of fuel/ignition to the possibilities for sensors to data log from (we are also doing a map conversion with this since we don't even have a maf anyway). Theres also a ton of nice little things like SPEED sensitive boost control so I can try to tune the surge out in lower gears. Hell we could even do a rally setup and have a flat horsepower across the rev range.
Can you tell I'm excited?

| So for those of you who are awaiting updates....... I don't have anything really yet but there are going to be some big milestones coming up in the next week (I hope) Have a set of tires 255/40/17 front and 275/40/17 rear without a hit of stretch or tons of negative camber so I sorry for the lack of drift-o-rama but that's not what this is all about. |
| Quote » |
| Also have the AEM unit going down with me when I go to work on this so if all goes well we will have a hand made widebody and a running car by the end of the week. |
As for the hand made widebody... is it really necessary? The tires you're running aren't that crazy, so I'd think a premade overfender would work for you. There are times I've wished I could've just modded an overfender for my car, as mine still have a ton of work required. It IS nice having an original look, though.

Seat is as low as It can go. I can fit fine but Mark is a bit on the tall side.
As for the rollcage, it is an autopower FIA Rally LEGAL cage. We did not have the resources to bend and fabricate our own cage. also if the cage extends farther than that point we would have needed to weld in additional floor bracing to make the cage legal.

I see you're using the KTS superdampers, is that right. Have you run them before? If so, what do you think about them? That's what I have for the Pikes Peak car and I don't know anyone that has any experience with them.
Also, what made you decide on the gusset plates between the cage and the body?
Great Job so far!!
Post Title: Re: About your coilovers... (kenno470)
Posted by: MagikDragon at 8:45 PM 9/11/2008
The gusset plates might not be nessicary but we cut the roof off and welded it back together to get the cage in, so we decided it was best if we support it in a few places, plus its that little bit of added rigidity between the chassis and the frame.

| KTS coilovers are made in the same facility as most JDM coilovers, but sell for alot less. I run them on my street car (which I also track) with good result. One reason I got them was because SPL Parts is a sponsor and hooked us up with a good deal, and they come with the mate for Z32 aluminum uprights, vs the stock cast steel parts for the s13. we are probably going to run these for a year or two, but they will probably be well underdamped for VIR. We are planning on doing a few Northeast Hillclimbs and I think they will suit well for the uneven terrain that lies down those roads. The gusset plates might not be nessicary but we cut the roof off and welded it back together to get the cage in, so we decided it was best if we support it in a few places, plus its that little bit of added rigidity between the chassis and the frame. |
Looking forward to getting your impressions of the KTS's on this car. How has SPL been to work with?

Car is alive and I took it for a spin around the block (most likely pissing off all the neighbors in the process). Unfortunately we didn't get any pictures this weekend but you'll all be in for a good suprise at the end of the week.
Time to get on to all of the little annoying details and hopefully we don't have to have someone working on it when it's on the trailer on the way down (as much fun as that would be)
The AEM ems is AWESOME though. I can't belive how easy it is to use. After plaing with a ton of the "BETTER" stuff in the honda world there is just no comparason to this.

We thought it was just an oil leak so we tightened up a few things and then went over to the dyno that is there to try and tune out some break up that we were having in the low RPM range. We figured out that we really had a bad head gasket but still managed to put down 260whp at 12 psi.
So the engine will be coming out for the winter to get refreshed (damn cometics gaskets) and will be back better than ever next year. We are also going to look at a new chassis today that should be a little straighter than the one we have now.
Pictures and video to follow soon.

| So we finally made it down to VIR. We got some practice laps in which were nothing special as we were both learning the track. I was black flagged while I was out there because we were burning oil. We thought it was just an oil leak so we tightened up a few things and then went over to the dyno that is there to try and tune out some break up that we were having in the low RPM range. | possibly, but I dont know who would want it, unless maybe as a starter car, because drifters cant get the camber they need, neither can the road racers, the only thing its good for is circle track. its actually perfect for it. |
24 hours of Lemons may just be in the cards for this one.

Sean, are the interior door panels slated for anything? I still need a door pocket for a driver side panel with grey interior

It looks like there is some rust under spoiler, but that's pretty much a given. Hey, when you guys remove the front inner fender liners, can you collect all the attaching hardware (clips, plastic bolts, etc.) that attach to the liner, fender, and fenderwell? I want to reinstall liners on mine, but I do not have any of the attaching hardware. I'll send you $$ for them. Also, Can I get the windsheild washer fluid container, motor, and mounting brackets as well? More $$ for you
And are you guys going to keep the stock overflow tank? This might turn into a F/S thread But here is the new thread
