So yea, names jerry, from miami, florida, USA.
So after i spent a year getting my sr built with pistons rods and all that jazz, i dont think im gonna use it lol.
A family member of mine owns a couple of junkyards, and i just got tired of seeing vh's thrown away. I have like 5 running motors right now plus like 4 that dont run, we usually chuck em anyway, no one buys them here.
So decided to put one in my s14.
Heres some pics of my mounts i made, I used a pair of hockey pucks for insulators, this has been done before with good results, the rest I fabricated from 1/4 steel plate.
The motor is as lows as possible on to the front crossmember, it looks like its touching but its just tilted foward a bit.

Here i test fitted it into one of my spare parts cars.

And finnally my play ground. lol
13 acres, 3500 cars plus or minus

You see in the pics the vh bellhousing , my next plan of action is to make the motor and the tranny happy together, after this motor goes in to car.

ON the stock NA ka24de in the 240sx people are getting more power by going with a 3 inch all the way then a 2.5 as logic would suggest with a natraully aspirated motor. This has been proved time and time again locally and on freshalloy.
So with a motor as big as a 4.5 liter VH theres no reason not to think that gains especially in the upper RPM range would be had with a dual 3 inch. It seems to me that a 3 inch single would be choking the motor a bit. As well as choking it after it goes forced induction. In addition a lot of supra guys are finding gains as much as 30 whp by just switching from a 3.0 inch downpipe to a 3.5 inch down pipe and leaving the rest of the exhaust 3 inches. But hey ive been proved wrong before.
Time will tell as soon as the headers and exhaust are made the car will be going stright to the dyno, and Ill be sure to post up the results.
Besides since I fabricate the exhaust myself its not costing a lot to do this, just the piping and U bends.

More than exhaust clearance im concerened with oil pan clearanceas you can see in this pic the oil pan is about 25 mm below the crossmember. If it becomes an issue ill have to cut it apart redisgn the pick up and just make it sit higher.

As for the mounts, I just got some 1/4 steel, used the stock mount to make a template for the block, made it a little longer. Placed the motor on the subframe then cut out peices to bolt it where i wanted it. Then weld.

Heres a pic, car is a 90. I am downloading the 94 vh service manual does anyone know if the pinouts are the same.

I assume these three plugs are the ones that need to be hooked up for this car to work.
To save me time does anyone know which wires have to be hooked up?
I assume all i need is
power from the eccs relay
power to the coils, injectors, maf, o2, tps, etc
fuel pump relay signal
Start signal
RPM signal
Colant temp signal
Check engine light
There was mention of the auto tranny inhibtor bypass, can anyone elaborate

Does anyone know if the vh tach output will work with the 4cyl guage cluster????
Should have the Z32 tranny adapter plate sorted out this week, more details to come once I know its done.

I think one member already has a VH45de running in an s13 hatch with the stock ecu/ harness but I think he just laid the harness over the S13 one and left the S13 ecu to control things and the VH45de to work the motor... its not the cleanest route but certainly the quickest and cheapest. and if youre savvy you could pare down the wiring once you did that and get it to look pretty sano.
Post Title:
Posted by: gs14racer at 1:45 PM 3/7/2007
15 wires in total
But im also using the check engin light, oil pressure light, factory temp guage, cooling fan signal for relay, and a/c. The stock 240sx ecu or harness is not necsacary.
Integrating it into the chassis harness will be easy enough.
Ill post the bare nessiscty for it to run wires later for future reference for others.
I only have one question.
What is pin 48 on the ecu?

If so how did that work out?
As for the accessories I'm trying to find a manual PS rack that will fit the S13 and give me a bit lower effort, I really don't care if I have ps or not, though it does make drifting a bit easier with it.
I am planning on doing a vh41 style front mount alternator, so you could try doing that with your accessories... I've been eyeing come of the billet stuff that summit racing sells and wondering how hard it would be to fit one of those kits up to my motor or alternatively, just build one to fit the vh.
I would also really like to do electric water pump, some of the ones they sell for the earlier Z's look like they are awfully close to working.

Good job with the aluminum. I have about 6 months doing aluminum and I can get it consistent when doing flat beads. Welding around things like tubing and such is tricky but a gas lens and lots of tungsten stick out help a lot.
I did this with a mig, i wish i had a tig lol. I may buy one in the next few months one I decide to fabricate the manifolds for the Individual throttle bodies.

i love your WP block off plate, do you think that you could have saved cash on fittings tho by going with a non-inline pump and just making it fit the stock location as was mentioned somewhere ^ up there?
Well, I wouldnt know where to start with that one. Some sort of cnc adapter would definitly be nescacry. These extra fittings and hose only cost me 150.00.
Its not that bad since I already have about 900.00 dollars in hose and fittings on this motor, and i still have a few to go.

I've been warned by several race engine builders now that these filters are ****house, the filter cores break down under the high oil pressure loads that are pushed through them resulting in starvation issues amongst other things!
I've been advised that ryco filters (ryko?) cause no such problems.
Other than that... nice work! Do you really think an oil catch can is necessary ?

I got some new nissan oil filters on the way.
As far as whether its nescary or not, I think so. This motor will probably spend a lot of time at or near redline, and i know theres gonna be a lot of oil vapor floating around. I spent a whole day cleaning out the intake manifold, i dont want it going back in lol. besides it looks cool:)

The transmission has to be milled down, no welding is performed at all. The plate bolts the the engine, then the transmission to the plate. Its pretty simple, just how it looks in the pictures.

I don't know if it will but when I do this swap I'm gonna try.
I figure if the tach works off an ignitor signal, why not try just running the tach off of ONE of the VH ignitors? Then you will get 4 pulses per revolution and the tach will read right. (But only if the factory tach uses an ignitor.)
There's only one way to find out. I believe it would work the worst that could happen would be it would read 2x engine speed or not work at all so why not try?

I am working on a fix for it as we speak, it wont be too difficult and you will be able to do it your self.
FYI the starter meshed up fine, turned the motor over on its own power today for the first time. just had to notch the adapter plate a bit and the block a bit, nothing major though.
Havent had a lot of time as of late, started a new job and have been forced to slow down a bit. It should be up and running soon

As far as hos does it feel , well its a very interesting sensation.
The car has this surge of power off idle, and then it kind of levels out then at higher rpms it has a second surge of power till it hits the limiter.

How did you get the tach to work? Did you have to get it recalibrated or is there a way to make it work with the infiniti ECU? I think when I do my swap the RPM's are gonna be a tad lower since I put the Q45 3.54 R200 into my S14 (man it sure kills the KA..it's torquey enough to not strain but man it's a dog....but the gas mileage improved)
Doesn't the tach get its signal from the ignitor chip? If so, the VH uses two just like a pair of 4 cylinders. Hook up the tach input to one of them and you should be good to go.

I wouldn't be suprised if they did. In Mexico they sold the B13 Sentra for many years after the B14 came out, with little more than a minor headlight update. It's mostly only the US market which provokes such rapid development cycles due to changing emissions and safetly regulations. Not convinced? Here's another example: Z32 300ZX! What'd they sell that until 2000 or 2001 or somethign like that. They were only without a Z for a couple years AFAIK, while we were missing it for ~7 model years. Wow is this thread getting off topic, and no thanks to me

The trick is to get all the pipes straight and it will seal, if one is slightly crooked it will leak at first then seal once it heats up.
On my car driverside seals perfect but when i redid the one pipe on the passenger side it kind is off a few degrees so it doesnt seal until it heats up.

gs14racer, Why did you configure the coolant lines like you did? Do you run a thermostat? Have you had any cooling issues? The reason I ask is because the only way I can get my 450Z to run under 210F during a 1/2hr track session was by "gutting" the thermostat. I'm running a large Griffon rad which worked very well with a 250HP 3.0lt 6cyl. I'm wondering if your plumbing option would fix my problem. Obviously the factory thermostat was a restriction. Let me know. Thanks
I am pretty sure he did that for 2 reasons. 1 he lives in miami florida so cold days really aren't cold. And 2 he is on the pedal everytime he drives it so a t-stat would only hurt him. That's my perception of things.
Being up in Canada I would assume you would drive it on cold days below 50 so having a t-stat would depend on the weather I guess. If it's just a track car I would go without it, just be sure to warm it up before heading out on really cold days. May even need to block the front of the rad a bit. The t-stat housing can't be that good for flow and bypassing it should provide a few more gpm's in there.
Post Title: Re: (T45)

Also on most modern engines, the thermostat is a 2 valve setup and if you just remove it you will leave the bypass port open at all times which will lead to overheating.

T45,
That sounds about right my belt is 30.5 inches long, but remember, I moved my accessories around.
Reason im thinking of scrapping it, is that i need the car to be reliable next year for the events id like to run, and I cant seem to find any low mileage VHs around here in florida, plus it would be nice to have a little bit less weight in the car as the ls1 is lighter and has more power, but is no near as cool as the VH. My biggest problem right now is time, work is crazy and time is very scarce.
Im really torn on this one right now, the ls1 is great and all but the VH is a VH.

They came with spacers because the spring free length is marginally shorter than factory length.
Less coils means greater valvelift capability & increased spring pressure. Increased material diameter (by 0.1) further adds to spring pressure.

Not really sure if these cars are pulling enough G's on acceleration to starve the oil pickup though. They WERE designed for a front sump, after all.

You always want to use copper or other soft metal, or else the springs will dig into the head and cause problems. The copper absorbs the beating this way, not the head.

If you'd like any internal engine pictures I have a couple good ones I got while assembling my engine. The original suspicions for the spun bearings were thought to be due to the front sump. GS14racer and someone else (who???) both spun bearings, and were both running front sumps. I haven't heard of anyone else having an issue who has converted to a rear sump. Not really sure if these cars are pulling enough G's on acceleration to starve the oil pickup though. They WERE designed for a front sump, after all.
It sounds like the same issue that the KAs have when drifting. You have to keep them over fill or else they starve for oil when sliding. I have witnessed two local KAs do this because people don't keep their oil at atleast the fill mark.

Well back from vacation and this is where the car sits, ill hopefully have pics of the VH up later this week.
after i took the original VH out this is what my engine bay looked like

Stitch welded the whole front end

Stripped the interoir out, cut the hump on the floor and welded mounts for a momo fixed seat

Anyway, after that i removed all the windows , and rest of stuff. Primed and painted the interior with 3 coats of Dupont Chromabase and 4 coats of dupont chroma clear in mercedes indium grey metallic. Its like a gunmetal with gold metallic.

Then i cut and re welded the front wheel houses for more clearance with the 275s up front, they shouldnt rub any more

then painted the engine bay, again dupont primer, basecoat and 4 coats of clear.

More pics to come

Getting the flywheel off

Removing the pain in the @ss auto bushing

Flywheel and clutch install

Have to cut the original starter mount off so the z32 starter can fit

Reassembled the Z32 tranny, took almost 2hrs to get the tranny on as the act clutch disc splines where tight as hell and wouldnt let the tranny slide in. Second act clutch this has happened with.

Here it is assembled waiting to go in the car. Looks hot, once its in there ill remove alot of parts for powdercoating. Havent decided what color to do the valve covers this time as wrinkle red is getting a bit played out what do you guys think.

I am now over 2,000 miles on my 2nd VH motor, and pan setup, and there are NO OIL ISSUES WITH A FRONT SUMP. Not yelling, just want it to be known. If the engine is in great shape(NO SLUDGE) and holds enough oil, no issues. I took her out drifting this holiday weekend, and not a single issue, except trying to control it without p/s.
Glad to see the progress. Nice work, and nothign wrong with painting the bay outside. Looks good.
Can we stop using seatbelts to hold VH's. One day someone is going ot get hurt. I dont want youngins to see it done here and copy with a weak belt, or just fate.

Here it is installed on the car.

As you can see there is no illusion of grond clearance here, my car is pretty low ( as low as the tein coilovers will go) and i have about 3 and some change inches of ground clearance. It should be fine as the other one hung about as low and only became an issue on some speed bumps and going on and off the trailer. Besides it aint any lower than the headers

Got a fan for my radiator, its a ford taurus dual speed fan, alot of mustang guys use them , and from just turning it on attached to my radiator it has twice as much air flow than the dual flexalites i had before. Plus it has a built in shroud and with a little trim it fit my rad perfectly, except for an inch or so that hung below the rad, which ill fix with a peice of aluminum.

Also made the braided hose for the catch can (which im fabbing up later this week) and installed the wiring, plus i was able to get the brake booster back on as well.
I love the fact that you can hardly see any wiring on this engine, and its all there

Lastly made the mounts for the radiator to sit on and got it in the car, im almost there lol.

Undercoated the both wheel wells

Made my own high pressure steel braided ps hose, and did the nylon braid for the return to the power steering cooler. They run real close to the headers so i put the heat sleeving over them.

Ballerific alluminum drive shaft

Here you can see where i put the fuel filter, the engine bay was too cluttered so i put it on the bottom of the car, the zip ties where just temporary, its all clamped in place now

Here you can see the power steering cooler, hopefully it wont boil over any more

Also got the expansion tank mounted , its at the highest point so i should have no air bubble problem since the radiator is lower than the water outlet

Also got rid of the origin sides and rears and bought another set of jdm zenki sides and valences, much better imo.

Thats it for now maybe ill get some dyno vids in a week or two then its off to paint.

1st pull base line, headers / exhaust

2nd pull left the vtc till redline no other changes, picked up a few hp up top tq remained the same

3rd pull vtc was stock a few degrees of timing and a little leaner
Big diference in tq below 4000. Best pull of the the night.

So the most power was 283hp 293wtq. I think with a little more fine tuning 300whp 300lbft tq is very achievable, we shall see. Ill have the .drf's tommorow and can over lay the 3 on winpep.

Heres the baseline pull (blue) vs the vtc turned off ( red) made about an 8hp increase up top. This new motor is running a little rich for some reason, dont know if the wideband from the dyno was good though, got to check a few things on the engine.

This is a tune with timing and fuel made the best increases down low almost 40lbft of tq below 4000rpm.

I will be probably spraying some nitrous thru this when i go to the drag strip, we shall see.
As for the oil relocation kit, the oil filter is the same as the 300zx and probably the skyline as well. So any relocation kit for either of those cars will work. Just cross reference the oil filter and if they are the same part number, there you go.

It comes with some 1500 / 3000 grit discs and an adapter for the DA sander, and 3 different compound, not to mention a dvd with instructions. It cost me 100 at the local body supply.

All i can say is wow, what would have taken me 2-3 days i did in a matter of hours.
Here is the process with the 1500 disc on the sander

Wiped down and ready for 3000 grit, matte black FTL

Here you can see the difference with the 3000 grit on the left and 1500 grit on the right. With the 3000 the surface already starts to shine before you even buff

This is complete, my camera died on battery so i didnt get the in between steps

Seriously though, very inspiring man!So not to start a new thread I have a couple of questions about the vh45de into s14 swap:
1) Do you need to relocate anything? (like PS/Fuse box or any of that kind)? for fitment?
2) Was wiring hard? I know Mazworx know makes a ready-to swap harness but its around $250
3) The tach/speedo issue, it seems like everyone is having, is it off or its working?
4) Do you have to get a custom radiator? or where can you get one? (maybe ka will work?)
Sorry for noob questions I looked through the thread but haven't found the answers, anyway sick swap man!

In other the news, i took the car out tonight to do some flogging and broke the transmission. It wont go into 2nd, 4th , or reverse. I might have broke a shift fork or the c clip that holds the stopper and wedged the shaft. Who knows ill have to take the trans out tommorow and possible replace it with one of my spares. Sigh, if it aint one things its another.

I dont think its really possible to break the z32 tranny sub 550lbft of torque after the abuse ive seen them take on slicks no less. TMO are you slamming thru the gears at 7500 rpm also?
Tranny will be out tonight to inspect, im sure its something stupid

Do you have any pictures of how you mounted your PS pump? I'd really like to see where you put it.
That is a painless wiring kit right? Those things are sweet. I'd really like to see what you were all able to cut out of the harness. I've thought about tackling that and re-doing my setup but i dont have a spare car to drive haha.

Yea tell me about it, unfourtunatly i dont have pics of how its mounted right now. I used an altima pump this time clocked in a different direction with a custom bracket, but in the stock location for the VH, the alternator is sitting where the a/c compressor used to be.
As for the harness , i made it myself from scratch, i special ordered the fusebox to my specs from bussman, actually the rep i spoke to at bussman was a 240z enthusiast and just sent it to me for free
. It took me a few weeks but i eliminated alot especially length but kept a few things. Obviously all the lights where kept, i also kept the p. windows and sunroof and radio. Everything works like stock, the only thing i omitted was the mirrors and power locks.
Before the original harness and fuesbox/relaybox was 51.5 lbs front to back. My harness weighs in at a feather lite 9.2 lbs
edit'
forgot to mention i also cut out
all ac/heater wiring
rear defrost
factory amplifier wiring

And you should try and get a picture of it for me haha. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to mount a 240 pump to it. Keep running into the damn sway bar. My engine is mounted super low too, so that doesn't help.

The first link is a properly depowered rack and the second is a bracket to eliminate the pump from the belt system.

Any way just as i thought the c clip came loose, you can see the washer and clip in the first pic at the bottom then the gouges and indentations on the shaft and housing where it rattled around, i probably installed it wrong the first time, anyway cleaned it up, put it back in and we are on the road again.

I would say just by looking at it though that it seems like if you clearance the frame for the alternator to stay in the same spot that the ac compressor will fit ever so slightly depending on how you mount your motor. It looks like it would have to be removed and put back in with from the bottom.
I know that for me if it fits in any possible location than I'm keeping it because I HATE
the heat 80 is the limit for me.

Finally got my battery cable routed, went thru the subframe, also put a 150 amp breaker in the back just in case.

Got my interior in, also put in the 5 point harness, still need a steering wheel though.

Snapped some pics of the whole car today, wish i could say its done but i still have so much to do...

Time for a rear diffuser?

I just bought a house so I the pace has slowed a bit, i have been debating turbo or n/a for a while. I will probably spray it when i take it to the track being that i already have the nos kit, probably a hundered shot or so on slicks .

Ok I definitely don't have the equipment and tools to make anything custom as shown here in this thread with Jerry's project. But I do have a engine hoist , air gun, engine stand and all the space and basic tools to do an overhaul.
I'm gonna need a Complete kit for an almost perfect plug and play as much as possible. I haven' seen a list made yet so if there is already one I'm sorry I tried looking.
MazworX VH45DE S Chassis KIT:
Motor mounts
Machine work
Hardware
Adapter plate
Shifter
Brackets
One-piece driveshaft
Speedo Recalibrator
Z32 Transmission
VH45DE Intake System
VH45DE Custom Headers
Conversion Harness
Other Parts Non MazworX:
Custom Exhaust Piping with Mufflers
Radiator & Hoses
Electric Fan
Clutch
Flywheel
Starter
VH45DE Main Harness & ECU
Power Steering Cooler with Lines (Not sure if this part is actually needed)
Not listed:
Total weight with Engine Tranny Harness and Accessories
This is all I can come up with from what I've read so far. Basically I personally need this to be an almost near perfect plug n play list of things to get as possible. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff so let me know.
Thanks,
Freddy

Also Mazworx says in order for the Alternator to clear you must cut part of the Frame is this true? I didn't see that done here.
Jerry used the S14 alternator on a custom bracket he fabricated so he didn't need to cut his framerail. Using the Mazworx kit it directs you to cut the framerait so that the VH45 alternator on the OEM bracket will fit.

If the goal of drifting is to get the car sideways, wouldn't you want less tire on the road, not as wide as possible? Does the wider tire give more predictible traction? Seems harder on the engine to me but I suppose once the tires break loose it's not that bad. I guess it just goes against common sense. Please enlighten me...
Post Title:

The weight from that corner of the car acting down on the wheel doesn't change... and by widening the tyre, you reduce the length of the contact patch, making it wider across the surface of the tyre.
In cornering, when camber changes and weight shifts off the wheel, you can imagine this strip of contact patch narrowing to a small area, as opposed to a narrower tyre where a more elongated section of contact patch would theoretically remain.
Basically, there is an optimal width tyre for each application, taking into account the other factors such as weight and suspension geometry. Once you go wider than that you are changing contact patch shape during cornering, but with a less optimal result.
This is also dependent on suspension settings of course. Will try dig up the article, it was a good read!
