Post Title: VH45de s14
Posted by: gs14racer at 7:07 PM 2/26/2007

Finnally got access to this forum again.

So yea, names jerry, from miami, florida, USA.

So after i spent a year getting my sr built with pistons rods and all that jazz, i dont think im gonna use it lol.

A family member of mine owns a couple of junkyards, and i just got tired of seeing vh's thrown away. I have like 5 running motors right now plus like 4 that dont run, we usually chuck em anyway, no one buys them here.

So decided to put one in my s14.

Heres some pics of my mounts i made, I used a pair of hockey pucks for insulators, this has been done before with good results, the rest I fabricated from 1/4 steel plate.

The motor is as lows as possible on to the front crossmember, it looks like its touching but its just tilted foward a bit.

Here i test fitted it into one of my spare parts cars.

And finnally my play ground. lol
13 acres, 3500 cars plus or minus

Also anyone have any advice on the adapter plate, i can probably figure it out but it would be nice to have something to start off of.

BTW motor will actually be going into this car

Good luck with your prodject man. Your s14 is sexy.
So can I have one of those vh45s for cheap?
My brother lives down there near you, wheres your familys junkyard at?

Got my z32 tranny clean 46k mile, mint car, rear ended, shame. 100.00.

You see in the pics the vh bellhousing , my next plan of action is to make the motor and the tranny happy together, after this motor goes in to car.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: hannibal at 3:36 PM 3/2/2007

Sweet project. I'm curious to see what you do for the bellhousing. There are a few guys that have made Z32/VH45 adapter plates. John Dixon is one...

Great looking S14!

Is this a PS line cut in these pics? Is that the side of the oil pan?

Post Title: Re: (IWannaS15)
Posted by: gs14racer at 3:48 PM 3/2/2007

Yes that is a view of the side of the oil pan.

I cut the factory power steering cooling loop out because it was in the way of the oil pan. Im gonna run a power steering cooler anyway.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 6:29 PM 3/2/2007

cool, what are you doing for headers?

Post Title: Re: (slownslurious)
Posted by: gs14racer at 7:38 PM 3/2/2007

Im clearancing the frame rails on both sides for some 4 into 1 long tube equal length headers with a 3 inch merge collector to dual 3 inch exhaust.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 8:18 PM 3/2/2007

where are you planning on running dual 3" on an S chassis, especially with respect to the pass side? no ground clearance!

Its defintely overkill for an NA vh anyway.

Post Title: Re: (slownslurious)
Posted by: gs14racer at 8:22 PM 3/2/2007

Dual till after the tranny then cross over to the driverside and out the back. Ill put an xpipe in there some where.

Its not gonna be NA for long. Plan is vortech supercharger which im trying to aquire now, looking for about 425-450 whp.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 12:32 PM 3/3/2007

I've got an eaton M112 and single 3" is plenty for me.

Post Title: Re: (slownslurious)
Posted by: gs14racer at 12:50 PM 3/3/2007

REason i am doing a dual 3 inch is because for example.

ON the stock NA ka24de in the 240sx people are getting more power by going with a 3 inch all the way then a 2.5 as logic would suggest with a natraully aspirated motor. This has been proved time and time again locally and on freshalloy.

So with a motor as big as a 4.5 liter VH theres no reason not to think that gains especially in the upper RPM range would be had with a dual 3 inch. It seems to me that a 3 inch single would be choking the motor a bit. As well as choking it after it goes forced induction. In addition a lot of supra guys are finding gains as much as 30 whp by just switching from a 3.0 inch downpipe to a 3.5 inch down pipe and leaving the rest of the exhaust 3 inches. But hey ive been proved wrong before.

Time will tell as soon as the headers and exhaust are made the car will be going stright to the dyno, and Ill be sure to post up the results.

Besides since I fabricate the exhaust myself its not costing a lot to do this, just the piping and U bends.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 5:01 PM 3/3/2007

yeah... my car is already pretty low I just dont think I could conceivably fit dual 3" pipe under it... if I was THAT concerned about back pressure I'd probably run cut outs for the track (or straight pipe). dual 3" is going to double the weight, cost, and cause ground clearance problems...
I was thinking about putting in a cut out right before the cat to see if it produced anything more than a louder, more menancing V-8 growl.

Post Title: Re: (slownslurious)
Posted by: gs14racer at 5:55 PM 3/3/2007

My cars prettly low as well you just have to get a bit creative (ie oval the piping in places) with it and it will fit.

More than exhaust clearance im concerened with oil pan clearanceas you can see in this pic the oil pan is about 25 mm below the crossmember. If it becomes an issue ill have to cut it apart redisgn the pick up and just make it sit higher.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 8:57 PM 3/3/2007

yeah mine is gonna be like that too and I'd rather avoid the cost and complexity of a dry sump system... I was thinking maybe a skid plate...
its gonna be pretty much a track car so its not a huge issue but still, it would be comforting to know that a track off or riding up on the curbing isn't going to destroy the engine.

To the gearbox if he uses the z32 transmission.

how much would you sell the one of the VH's for. and if u could post the dimensions of your fab'd up motor mount. thnx

Post Title: Re: (dj_monstar)
Posted by: gs14racer at 11:45 AM 3/5/2007

Not interested in selling any of the vh's now, as i dont know how many im gonna blow up getting where i want to be.

As for the mounts, I just got some 1/4 steel, used the stock mount to make a template for the block, made it a little longer. Placed the motor on the subframe then cut out peices to bolt it where i wanted it. Then weld.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)

Got the harness out of one of the donor cars to convert it for my s14. Ive done plenty of Sr harnesses, as well as built my own chassis harness so wiring doesnt really bother me.

Heres a pic, car is a 90. I am downloading the 94 vh service manual does anyone know if the pinouts are the same.

I assume these three plugs are the ones that need to be hooked up for this car to work.

To save me time does anyone know which wires have to be hooked up?
I assume all i need is

power from the eccs relay
power to the coils, injectors, maf, o2, tps, etc
fuel pump relay signal
Start signal
RPM signal
Colant temp signal
Check engine light

There was mention of the auto tranny inhibtor bypass, can anyone elaborate

Does anyone know if the vh tach output will work with the 4cyl guage cluster????

Should have the Z32 tranny adapter plate sorted out this week, more details to come once I know its done.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: slownslurious at 8:33 PM 3/5/2007

the only one of your questions I can answer right now is the tach one and the answer is no.

I think one member already has a VH45de running in an s13 hatch with the stock ecu/ harness but I think he just laid the harness over the S13 one and left the S13 ecu to control things and the VH45de to work the motor... its not the cleanest route but certainly the quickest and cheapest. and if youre savvy you could pare down the wiring once you did that and get it to look pretty sano.

Post Title:
Posted by: gs14racer at 1:45 PM 3/7/2007

Got most of the wiring squared away.

15 wires in total

But im also using the check engin light, oil pressure light, factory temp guage, cooling fan signal for relay, and a/c. The stock 240sx ecu or harness is not necsacary.

Integrating it into the chassis harness will be easy enough.

Ill post the bare nessiscty for it to run wires later for future reference for others.

I only have one question.

What is pin 48 on the ecu?

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: Mettler at 5:15 PM 3/7/2007

48 goes from ECU straight to the throttle position sensor (TPS), though if your motor had TCS it forks and has a wire branching off to the TCS module as well, which can be terminated.

Post Title: Re: VH45de s14 (gs14racer)

Got the good motor so i can start fabricating the exhaust, while the adapter plate is being finished.

Also the hood closes fine

Post Title:

Someone in Miami has already made 1 set of VH45DE headers, but they were for the motor in a 95 Q45. I'm sure the angles/clearances will be different.

I'm loving the idea .

Post Title:
Posted by: Mettler at 12:36 PM 3/29/2007

You're making great progress mate! Toughest S14 I've ever seen :D

I'd be interested to see/hear your solutions for clutch master & slave cylinders, and brake booster.

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 5:31 PM 3/29/2007

looks to have the stock ones still on the firewall, from the pictures....

Post Title:
Posted by: Mettler at 5:37 PM 3/29/2007

*slaps forehead*

****in LHD, here's me looking at the proper side of the car for the brake booster etc, when of course it's on that crazy foreign other side position!

But seriously, even so, I'd have thought the brake booster would be interfering with the head ?

Post Title: Re: (Mettler)
Posted by: gs14racer at 9:11 PM 3/29/2007

As far as the booster , the motor is so low it clears, actually its slightly touching, so im just gonna grind down the valve cover a little bit. The mounts are almost solid so it shouldnt rock enough to hit it.

By my calculations i only need to remove about 2 mm of material off the back corner for it to have a fair amount of room.

But thats small potatoes.

My real problem is this

Power steering. The pump wants to be where the sway bar is, any thoughts guys. It interferes so much that theres no way it will fit.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: k4rr at 9:33 PM 3/29/2007

Go with a electris powersteering pump!! A guy is selling one on ebay right now. They come on 2nd gen mr2s

Found this out for myself a few weeks ago... I have 1mm of clearance between the oil pan and the crossmember and 1mm of clearance between the hood skin and the intake manifold... I had to remove the hood skeleton where the IM is... did you have to do the same?

Post Title: Re: VH45de s14 (SuperHatch)
Posted by: gs14racer at 8:08 AM 3/30/2007

yep, i had to do the same

Post Title:
Posted by: slownslurious at 8:16 AM 3/30/2007

yeah that looks really good, like it was made for it! now forgive my ignorance, but aren't those the stock headers you just slid between the frame rails?

If so how did that work out?

As for the accessories I'm trying to find a manual PS rack that will fit the S13 and give me a bit lower effort, I really don't care if I have ps or not, though it does make drifting a bit easier with it.
I am planning on doing a vh41 style front mount alternator, so you could try doing that with your accessories... I've been eyeing come of the billet stuff that summit racing sells and wondering how hard it would be to fit one of those kits up to my motor or alternatively, just build one to fit the vh.
I would also really like to do electric water pump, some of the ones they sell for the earlier Z's look like they are awfully close to working.

Post Title: Re: (slownslurious)
Posted by: gs14racer at 8:27 AM 3/30/2007

Nope fortunatly the stock headers wouldnt work, they are removed in the in car pics.

Today I get to fabricate headers, should take me a week i think.

Can we say equal length for the win, this is as far as i can get with out the merge collectors, they will be here shortly..

Its a little rough right now as its very hard to weld on your back right under the car, I have little slag burns all over me lol

Started the pass side also

Well I was in the air of what to do...but I guess I should just go ahead and do it. I just got an S14, needs exhaust, and I have a perfectly good Q45....
How much would you charge to make me those motor mounts and headers?
Also would I be able to retain the auto for now (the 240 is also an auto and it would be a cool "quick"(read as cheap as possible, don't want to adapt Z32 trans yet) swap...just pull KA24 and trans and install Vh and trans in it's place) or would the new mounting interfere with trans/starter mounting?
Thx for any suggestions...

If you want I could send you a jpg of the Smartdraw plan I made up for the 450Z wiring. You can see a snap shot on my cardomain website http://www.cardomain.com/ride/563982

Water pump block off plate for electric water pump

Motor on the hoist about to go in

Good job with the aluminum. I have about 6 months doing aluminum and I can get it consistent when doing flat beads. Welding around things like tubing and such is tricky but a gas lens and lots of tungsten stick out help a lot.

I did this with a mig, i wish i had a tig lol. I may buy one in the next few months one I decide to fabricate the manifolds for the Individual throttle bodies.

Well, I wouldnt know where to start with that one. Some sort of cnc adapter would definitly be nescacry. These extra fittings and hose only cost me 150.00.

Its not that bad since I already have about 900.00 dollars in hose and fittings on this motor, and i still have a few to go.

I've never tried aluminum with mig. I'm used to controlling all the variables my self so it would be hard for me. It looks clean though, I didn't know migged aluminum could look like that.

For the love of god please do not use a FRAM filter!!!

I've been warned by several race engine builders now that these filters are ****house, the filter cores break down under the high oil pressure loads that are pushed through them resulting in starvation issues amongst other things!

I've been advised that ryco filters (ryko?) cause no such problems.

Other than that... nice work! Do you really think an oil catch can is necessary ?

Post Title: Re: (Mettler)

Yea, ive heard the same thing. Im not using it this is just a throw a way so i can flush it out after like 20 miles or so. Just in case any dirt and dust that got inside when the engine was open.

I got some new nissan oil filters on the way.

As far as whether its nescary or not, I think so. This motor will probably spend a lot of time at or near redline, and i know theres gonna be a lot of oil vapor floating around. I spent a whole day cleaning out the intake manifold, i dont want it going back in lol. besides it looks cool:)

FYI

Everyone the adapter plate is done

The shop made four more of them

Price will be 475.00 plus shipping both ways

Thats for the plate, machining your bellhousing and hardware. Its made to work with the 300zx clutch , flywheel, and starter.

I should have it tommorow, pics coming soon.

For those adapter plates...

Does your motor or your transmission have to be milled down, and then the adapter plate welded on where the old bolts used to be?

If anyone can directly explain how the adapters work that would be awesome - I never quite get it :P

The transmission has to be milled down, no welding is performed at all. The plate bolts the the engine, then the transmission to the plate. Its pretty simple, just how it looks in the pictures.

maybe i am just not seeing it, but on the lower portion of the bell housing, the part that isn't milled down, what goes there to prevent dirt and other crap from getting inside?

Post Title:

you could just take a peice of sheet metal and make an inspection plate to bolt to the lower bolts.. roll some beads in it and there you go... that adapter looks alot like the one for the ka motor to a 300z tranny.. man i wish i had money again...

Does anyone know if the vh tach output will work with the 4cyl guage cluster????

I don't know if it will but when I do this swap I'm gonna try.
I figure if the tach works off an ignitor signal, why not try just running the tach off of ONE of the VH ignitors? Then you will get 4 pulses per revolution and the tach will read right. (But only if the factory tach uses an ignitor.)
There's only one way to find out. I believe it would work the worst that could happen would be it would read 2x engine speed or not work at all so why not try?

Post Title: Re: (twoeightythreez)
Posted by: gs14racer at 6:00 PM 5/5/2007

I can tell you for sure that the tach will not work.

I am working on a fix for it as we speak, it wont be too difficult and you will be able to do it your self.

FYI the starter meshed up fine, turned the motor over on its own power today for the first time. just had to notch the adapter plate a bit and the block a bit, nothing major though.

Havent had a lot of time as of late, started a new job and have been forced to slow down a bit. It should be up and running soon

HI i havent posted alot on this forumn alot jus watchin and learning but your build up is my idol and im planing on doin the same in my own s14 over the winter my biggest mind boggle is going to be mating a transmission onto the vh and as i can see from this thread u have or know a machine shop that can do it. Is this still viable bacause as i see there was no givin adress or phone number to contact them or you.So what im saying is im definatley interested in the adapter plate and machining of the housing so if you could email me personally or post how i can send my bellhousing to u to have it modified would be great.

Project is still alive, got a new job and havent had time for much else, anyway heres where im at

Due to a gross miss calculation on my part, i put one of the primaries on the pass header thru the starter and that kind of side tracked me for a while. I cut it off and im just gonna re route it.

Post Title:
Posted by: mtcookson at 8:15 PM 6/9/2007

Do you know roughly how long your primaries are?

Post Title: Re: (mtcookson)
Posted by: gs14racer at 5:13 PM 6/10/2007

Ill measure them out in a few minutes

Anyway heres todays progress , put the tranny back together took 15 minutes total.

Good news is the mazworx tranny to chassis mount for the sr20 kit is a direct bolt on in my application which means that the drive shaft for the vg trans with sr20 will bolt on too, makes this ten time easier

The primaries are roughly 31 inches long.

Once again thanks for the compliments.

Yes i am going to heat shield everything on the pass side. Shifter is about an 1 inch to far back, no biggie the mazworx kit is provisioned for it already.

Got the driveshaft on. Another Mazworx part.

Engine coming out again for the 24 billionth time

Since i made the headers with out a tranny attached to the motor i wanted to make sure it didnt crash the headers into something after it was installed so did the driverside today

My Mile and a half of steering column clearance

Clutch will be here tommorow and after this weekend motor should be in there permanatly.

Post Title: Re: (USsil80)

Yea i cut the middle of the radiator support out, it made pulling the motor in and out wih the transmission a breeze.

I might put it back on or i may leave it out and angle the radaitor forward ala rx-7 style.

I running the q45 ecu and engine harness , all the rest is 240sx.

The mounts will fit the same on an s13 however the rack clearance might be different being as the cars use different racks, all though they interchange s13-14 the mounting points are different.

Clutch lines, slave, etc are in clutch engages perfect, starter is on motor turns over but doesnt fire yet, still need a couple more parts should have by tommorow.

Heres the booster clearance, although in the picture it looks tight , you can stick your whole hand in between the booster and the valve cover.

This is the way i think im gonna sit the radiator

Shifter placement, feels perfect.

Great job, that engine looks beautiful in there. I just finished converting my NA 300zx to a twin turbo. Down the road I would like to sell off all my turbo hardware and put a VH in place of the VG. Has anyone measured the distance between the frame rails on the S14 vs the Z32, or will the clearance be just as tight on the sides in my Z?

oh and btw the video was without an idle air control valve or fast idle solenoid hooked up, the motor starts and holds perfect idle without it so i dont think im gonna run the idle air control valve. any downsides?

Post Title: Re: Great work (gs14racer)
Posted by: Hogg at 6:40 AM 6/26/2007

As well as most of the other sensors on the motor people tell me theyre just "Luxury sensors" and dont really do anything, I dunno - maybe rip em all off... Like the exhaust temp and idle control etc? When I looked at the motor there was wires everywhere, but I didnt think all of those could contribute to just the running of the motor?

My 2 cents :P

Post Title:
Posted by: Mettler at 3:41 PM 6/26/2007

If you want your motor to be a pig of a thing on a cold morning, go right ahead and rip off the idle control valve... and if you don't care for fuel economy and like having it run rich, go right ahead and rip out the O2 sensor.

All of these things serve to make the engine run smoother and more efficiently, and even if you're changing its configuration somewhat, it helps to retain stuff like that if you aren't planning on doing any major retuning.

-16 fittings welded to the radiator

Fabbed up an alternator bracket for the 240sx alternator, and used the old vh45 a/c tensioner flipped upside down and sideways to tension the whole assembly. The powersteering will work right above the alternator however i just want to drive the car at this point so ill make the bracket later, haha

As the selfproclaimed first person to stick a vh45 in an s chassis in florida, Welcome to the club. Very nice work! If you`re curious what it sounds like with a flowmaster check this out http://videos.streetfire.net/v...9.htm We also have a z32 tranny, but an n/a. A/C was a nogo in the s13 chassis. we were able to use the ps in the stock location just modified the tension rod bracket. There is a pic of it in the car here http://www.ellisautoworkz.com/450SX.htm . Not as nice as your`s, it was deffinatly a budget build, hell the car was only $600. The motor is making 225 hp at 800 rpm at the rear wheels. It`s plain sick to drive,

Once again, sweet build. Can`t wait to see it one day. BTW, we are in Tampa.

RPM at cruising speed, i have no idea, havent connected the tach yet lol.

As far as hos does it feel , well its a very interesting sensation.
The car has this surge of power off idle, and then it kind of levels out then at higher rpms it has a second surge of power till it hits the limiter.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)

Id expect anywhere from 20-30HP, however the powerband is different. Basically you dont get that "sinking" feeling in the middle, it starts off strong and once you get to about 3500 the thing just starts pulling like a freight train.

Our ECU's are switchable so you can switch between stock and upgraded.

How's that tach man. I'm dying to know the cruising speed also because I can get a sweet deal on a vh45.

the tach works fine, 75 mph about 3400 rpm

what cross member did you end up using for the transmission? and would that driveshaft fit the s13 chassis? it should... just making sure though. also curious how much it ran you. or what the dimensions of it were.

thanks in advance

How did you get the tach to work? Did you have to get it recalibrated or is there a way to make it work with the infiniti ECU?
I think when I do my swap the RPM's are gonna be a tad lower since I put the Q45 3.54 R200 into my S14 (man it sure kills the KA..it's torquey enough to not strain but man it's a dog....but the gas mileage improved)

Doesn't the tach get its signal from the ignitor chip? If so, the VH uses two just like a pair of 4 cylinders. Hook up the tach input to one of them and you should be good to go.

Buy an engine and all the parts necessary first... build your parts inventory until you have what you need to do the conversion, then go from there.

I wouldn't be suprised if they did. In Mexico they sold the B13 Sentra for many years after the B14 came out, with little more than a minor headlight update. It's mostly only the US market which provokes such rapid development cycles due to changing emissions and safetly regulations. Not convinced? Here's another example: Z32 300ZX! What'd they sell that until 2000 or 2001 or somethign like that. They were only without a Z for a couple years AFAIK, while we were missing it for ~7 model years. Wow is this thread getting off topic, and no thanks to me

You should still be able to get VH45's from the factory. Theyre like 5 grand though.

Hey regarding your headers... did you weld your collectors on? Or are they just slipped on? How well does that seal?

Post Title: Re: (Mettler)
Posted by: gs14racer at 9:48 PM 9/12/2007

I did not weld the collectors on they just slide in.

The trick is to get all the pipes straight and it will seal, if one is slightly crooked it will leak at first then seal once it heats up.

On my car driverside seals perfect but when i redid the one pipe on the passenger side it kind is off a few degrees so it doesnt seal until it heats up.

I ditto your request.I`m trying to wire up my vh45 into a dodge dakota. When I turn on the ignition,I have the relayed power to the fuel pump and controller working off of the ecu ok,I`m getting gas to the engine.I have relayed power to the coils too.The engine cranks,I`m getting power at the coils, injectors. The damn thing won`t start.I do have one bad injector though engine ran ok before I started the swap. The only thing that I can think of is that ecu Ignition signal,Start signal and how I am suppling the power to the ecu is not correct. QUESTIONS: ecu pins 1,2,3,11,12,13,14,15 are ignition signal wires where do they lead?Pin 43, Start Signal,How did you hook yours?Pin 45, Ignition Switch. Diagram shows it connecting up at fuel pump relay circuit between relay and ignition switch. That works OK but when Key is turned off, ecu won`t power down for me.Pins 48,49,58,59 look like power supply to ecu.How did you wire yours?Like injectors and coils, that have both 12V power and ecu pin out wires connected to them, are there any other engine components that need 12V power in addition to the pin out wires? This is an awful long post and maybe it is in the wrong place, but you mentioned needing wiring specifics from GS Racer and maybe a lot of other people could benefit from a more detailed account so as someone on this site said to not "Re-invent The Wheel"

gs14racer,
Why did you configure the coolant lines like you did? Do you run a thermostat? Have you had any cooling issues? The reason I ask is because the only way I can get my 450Z to run under 210F during a 1/2hr track session was by "gutting" the thermostat. I'm running a large Griffon rad which worked very well with a 250HP 3.0lt 6cyl. I'm wondering if your plumbing option would fix my problem. Obviously the factory thermostat was a restriction. Let me know. Thanks

i think you'll find that if you wire in the stock tach it will read, even tho it will be reading 2x as high you can adjust it to read correctly, we do this all the time on rb motor swaps...
good work tho...im considing a z32 vh swap with a t51kai bolted to the side.

I am pretty sure he did that for 2 reasons. 1 he lives in miami florida so cold days really aren't cold. And 2 he is on the pedal everytime he drives it so a t-stat would only hurt him. That's my perception of things.

Being up in Canada I would assume you would drive it on cold days below 50 so having a t-stat would depend on the weather I guess. If it's just a track car I would go without it, just be sure to warm it up before heading out on really cold days. May even need to block the front of the rad a bit. The t-stat housing can't be that good for flow and bypassing it should provide a few more gpm's in there.

Post Title: Re: (T45)
Posted by: SeanDean at 1:45 PM 11/23/2007

Just remember that on some cars, without a thermostat the water will pass through the radiator too quickly and not cool down enough, though this usually more a function of not enough water volume in the system.

Also on most modern engines, the thermostat is a 2 valve setup and if you just remove it you will leave the bypass port open at all times which will lead to overheating.

Post Title: Re: (SeanDean)
Posted by: 450Z at 4:15 PM 11/23/2007

usually running with no t-stat will lead to the pump cavitating due to the lack of back pressure. So usually you need some sort of orifice in stead of the t-stat. I guess I'll run like that and just take my time getting the oil up to temp before running hard.
thanks

Post Title:

You could always just gut the Tstat and put it back in if backpressure is a concern. However you said you took it out and it helped so I don't see cavatation as an issue.

Re-read the first post. I guess you already did that.

Post Title: Re: (tmorgan4)
Posted by: 450Z at 5:45 AM 11/24/2007

The muffler was a "quick and dirty job" which I will have to address this winter. After working on the car for over 1.5 yrs, I was tired of working on it and just wanted to drive it. So 4 days before my annual lapping day in May, the car was close to being drivable. So I threw on whatever doors, hoods, fenders I could find to close the car off. I did a 3hr exhaust system so I could hear if anything was interfering or rubbing. 2" off the manifold (beautiful headers like gs14racer will have to wait till later) to a single Dynomax muffler with 2.5" exit. Glad I did, as it turned out that both rear flex brake lines were rubbing on the rims! A simple 10 minute fix, which could have "wrecked" my day.
So I have been running the car every chnace I could rather then working on it. Having run on several track this year to tune the suspension/heating/brakes I was glad the exhaust was as quite as it was. We have a couple of tracks in the area that have a 95dB noise limit. At full throttle I was running 97dB. So as much as I would like to open up the exhaust some more I have to be careful.

Post Title:

As far as power goes the LSx is way more upgradable with bolt on's. However if you do everything yourself and spend another year on it you can have one sick DETT probably over 800 hp. Just depends on what you and your wallet are willing to go through I guess.

Oh, I measured the belt and it seems as if I need a 32" 4 rib belt. Sound close?

T45,

That sounds about right my belt is 30.5 inches long, but remember, I moved my accessories around.

Reason im thinking of scrapping it, is that i need the car to be reliable next year for the events id like to run, and I cant seem to find any low mileage VHs around here in florida, plus it would be nice to have a little bit less weight in the car as the ls1 is lighter and has more power, but is no near as cool as the VH. My biggest problem right now is time, work is crazy and time is very scarce.

Im really torn on this one right now, the ls1 is great and all but the VH is a VH.

Post Title: Re: (T45)

have you thought about an electric water pump. Right now the shop Im dealing with for my manifold is also cutting an adapter plate for me. With that I can bolt the plate to the block and then CRS offers an electric pump that will then bolt to the plate easily. Let me know I will take picks once its done. They said they will have both ready by the end of the week.

Post Title: Re: (Carl H)

Post Title:

Well I've got my upgrade valvesprings (pics & info coming), but I can't promise you an ETA on cams. They'll be done though because I have the material for them, but it's on the backburner until my car's going.

Maybe you could slap an LS1 in there for the time being, but keep your VH45 rig spare and then when I have some cams for you, you'll be able to do a sick build with some high lift cams, and bung the VH back in there?

Post Title:
Posted by: T45 at 6:57 PM 12/10/2007

Yeah, just slap a LS1 in there for a little while. rofl

LS engine are ugly, inefficient and gas hogs. Other than that they are great for high horsepower!

They came with spacers because the spring free length is marginally shorter than factory length.

Less coils means greater valvelift capability & increased spring pressure. Increased material diameter (by 0.1) further adds to spring pressure.

If you'd like any internal engine pictures I have a couple good ones I got while assembling my engine. The original suspicions for the spun bearings were thought to be due to the front sump. GS14racer and someone else (who???) both spun bearings, and were both running front sumps. I haven't heard of anyone else having an issue who has converted to a rear sump.

Not really sure if these cars are pulling enough G's on acceleration to starve the oil pickup though. They WERE designed for a front sump, after all.

You always want to use copper or other soft metal, or else the springs will dig into the head and cause problems. The copper absorbs the beating this way, not the head.

It sounds like the same issue that the KAs have when drifting. You have to keep them over fill or else they starve for oil when sliding. I have witnessed two local KAs do this because people don't keep their oil at atleast the fill mark.

well its about time to bring this thread back from the dead, after boiling over this for the past few months then regretting i sold the whole setup, then doing the sr20det, i got another low mileage clean vh45de with good maintence. Its a 95 motor and runs good, the only thing i can tell thus far it has wrong with it is it barfs some black smoke from time to time. Probably has an injector or two bad, or sparkplugs need to be done. But we will see, i hope to have the engine in the car by next weekend and running the week after that but i guess we will see. This time around i will be using the complete kit from mazworx so install should be a breeze. Hoping this time we can push this fuc@ker over 300whp.

Also the car is completly different too , it is now widebody with a 6 point tigwelded roll cage and kouki front end, different color too. Ill be posting more pics in the days to come as im in cancun mexico now on vacation lol. Stay tuned

Well back from vacation and this is where the car sits, ill hopefully have pics of the VH up later this week.

after i took the original VH out this is what my engine bay looked like

Stitch welded the whole front end

Stripped the interoir out, cut the hump on the floor and welded mounts for a momo fixed seat

Anyway, after that i removed all the windows , and rest of stuff. Primed and painted the interior with 3 coats of Dupont Chromabase and 4 coats of dupont chroma clear in mercedes indium grey metallic. Its like a gunmetal with gold metallic.

Then i cut and re welded the front wheel houses for more clearance with the 275s up front, they shouldnt rub any more

then painted the engine bay, again dupont primer, basecoat and 4 coats of clear.

More pics to come

its a mazworx cage, i highly doubt they'd half *** it.

Post Title:

It has alot of rear bars but nothing in front

Post Title:
Posted by: Carl H at 5:09 PM 8/25/2008

perhaps thats what he wanted?
more of a roll bar than a full cage?

Post Title: Re: (Carl H)
Posted by: gs14racer at 5:47 PM 8/25/2008

Sorry i misuse cage alot its a 6 point roll bar, not cage.

Post Title:
Posted by: midnightsliding at 7:15 PM 8/25/2008

well im sure that they did not half *** it im not doubting their work. just a few things i dont like about it even though its just a roll bar
1) the 2 piece diagonal bar
2)the way its is concaved dose not help for strength during roll over.
3) the placement of the diagonal, its welded near the weakest point on the hoop.

but its tig welded so thats b*dass and strong and saves weight but i still love your car! keep it up gives me hope.

Fresh off the back of my truck

Incredibly clean

Popped of the valve cover, the old man wasnt lying about regular oil changes

Tranny is already at mazworx, should have it back by tommorow.

This engine looks a lot better than the last ones. Are you going rear sump this time? I need to get some pictures of my oil pan I built.

Hope to see some progress soon since you always work fast. Glad to see you back around here!

Thanks good to be back lol. Front sump is the only way to go unfortunatly. I dont think it was the original problem anyway.

The motor should be running this weekend, im trying out the mazworx kit this time so everything should be plug and play.

looks nice man, but im curious as to why they didnt just go vband on the headers...its such a tight fit in that area anyways that a vband would help clearance.
curious to see how well it fits.

Heres todays progress , thanks to YUCA for the help.

Getting the flywheel off

Removing the pain in the @ss auto bushing

Flywheel and clutch install

Have to cut the original starter mount off so the z32 starter can fit

Reassembled the Z32 tranny, took almost 2hrs to get the tranny on as the act clutch disc splines where tight as hell and wouldnt let the tranny slide in. Second act clutch this has happened with.

Here it is assembled waiting to go in the car. Looks hot, once its in there ill remove alot of parts for powdercoating. Havent decided what color to do the valve covers this time as wrinkle red is getting a bit played out what do you guys think.

Hopefully she will go in tommorow if hurricane gustav isnt lingering still

Post Title:
Posted by: Carl H at 7:00 PM 8/31/2008

slide hammer ftmfw to get auto converter bushings out.
looks like you'll have to pull the headers to install the mount plates.
looking good tho man, i just finished the passneger header on my car and that was a pain in the ***.

I am now over 2,000 miles on my 2nd VH motor, and pan setup, and there are NO OIL ISSUES WITH A FRONT SUMP. Not yelling, just want it to be known. If the engine is in great shape(NO SLUDGE) and holds enough oil, no issues. I took her out drifting this holiday weekend, and not a single issue, except trying to control it without p/s.

Glad to see the progress. Nice work, and nothign wrong with painting the bay outside. Looks good.

Can we stop using seatbelts to hold VH's. One day someone is going ot get hurt. I dont want youngins to see it done here and copy with a weak belt, or just fate.

There are so many places to hook a chain too, I use a leveler. trying to be helpful.

Got it running today. First start up was a little rough, as i had a couple spark plugs that broken that i just stuck in the holes to plug them which i forgot about, and i had the firing order backwards on the driverside bank, but once i got new plugs in her, and fixed the firing order and plugged the vacum leaks it purred like a kitten.

First video, running rough

Todays progress. Got my alternator and power steering pump mounted. Im not cutting any more holes in my car so i made my own brackets to make everything clear. For the alternator , this time i used the VH's alt, with a hacked SR20 lower bracket, still have to make the top bracket though. For the power steering pump i got a smaller one from the junkyard and made my own bracket as well thru a combination of hacking apart the VH bracket, and some scrap peices i had laying around.

The alternator belt isnt here yet as the size i needed was a special order but the ps one is fine and tensioned.

Got some more parts in, should get more tommorow as well. Im hoping this whole car comes together in the next few weeks as im very anxious to drive it again.

Exchanged my steel driveshaft with mazworx for an aluminum one

Got some fittings and hoses for the crank evac and powersteering cooler

Some misc brackets and pulleys from powder coating ( matte black )

Got the valve covers too, done in wrinkle black this time, red is getting played out

yea carl, dollar for dollar you cant beat a griffin

Got the preliminary cutting and flanges welded on the xpipe. Got to go pick up my mufflers and the rest of the mandrel bends i need to finish this tommorow.

Here it is installed on the car.

As you can see there is no illusion of grond clearance here, my car is pretty low ( as low as the tein coilovers will go) and i have about 3 and some change inches of ground clearance. It should be fine as the other one hung about as low and only became an issue on some speed bumps and going on and off the trailer. Besides it aint any lower than the headers

Post Title: Re: (craigztoyz)
Posted by: gs14racer at 3:40 PM 9/20/2008

Ground clearance is for sissies

Dual 3 inch exhaust, xpipe, dual magnaflow mufflers

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: gs14racer at 5:53 PM 9/20/2008

Finnally got the car on the ground its got plenty clearance, never again will i be able to take a speed bump though. The pictures look like the mufflers hang lower than the bumper , but its not really that much, they are tucked nicely under the car.

Thanks, hows the turbo Q doing, any dyno numbers yet. Thats what i really wanted to do, just not enough room.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: sijoko at 1:05 PM 9/23/2008

The turbo Q is running 7.5 psi of boost without any problems. The trans is getting a bit noisy so I need to plan on changing it in the future.

I've still got some other things that need to be done like the exhaust after the turbo. Right now, it has some stainless steel flex tubing for the center part of the exhaust. It works but clearance is an issue so I need to look at some oval tubing.

The car is out of the picture at the moment. Last time I drove it was about a month ago. I've got it parked at my Mom's place in Atlanta.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: gs14racer at 4:09 PM 9/26/2008

nothing much to report, im waiting on parts again to finish the engine bay, and for the brakes. Im trying to get the car driving so i can take it to get painted next month and be done for now.

So as a result of killing time , im building a new harness for the engine, getting rid of all the stuff im not using and tucking it away for less visibility.

Example coil pack harness before

After

Still a work in progress hope to have the car drving soon.

Post Title:
Posted by: qsiguy at 10:22 PM 9/26/2008

Beautiful work. Really nice job on the exhaust and the motor looks amazing. I've been thinking about redoing some of my exhaust too. I know I have a few small leaks pre turbo. Might spool a little quicker if I fix them. Every little bit helps.

Post Title: Re: (qsiguy)
Posted by: tmorgan4 at 1:47 AM 9/27/2008

That's a great idea for the coil pack harnesses! Did you just cut the connectors with a little wire left and add in some fresh wires? It's difficult to find good coil pack harnesses. Every set I've ever seen was cracking and about to fall apart.

Moved the ignitors to the inside of the car, and finish both coil pack harnesses.

Very nice work. It will let people see the beauty of the VH instead of a bunch of wires. LOL.

Post Title: Re: (sijoko)
Posted by: gs14racer at 7:18 PM 10/5/2008

well got a bit accomplised today.

Got a fan for my radiator, its a ford taurus dual speed fan, alot of mustang guys use them , and from just turning it on attached to my radiator it has twice as much air flow than the dual flexalites i had before. Plus it has a built in shroud and with a little trim it fit my rad perfectly, except for an inch or so that hung below the rad, which ill fix with a peice of aluminum.

Also made the braided hose for the catch can (which im fabbing up later this week) and installed the wiring, plus i was able to get the brake booster back on as well.

I love the fact that you can hardly see any wiring on this engine, and its all there

Lastly made the mounts for the radiator to sit on and got it in the car, im almost there lol.

Post Title:
Posted by: sijoko at 7:25 PM 10/5/2008

I'm running the Taurus fan on my Turbo Q. It moves a lot of air so you will have no problems. Just make sure you use a heavy duty relay and wiring since that thing pulls some serious amperage on the high speed circuit.

The engine bay looks very nice. Are you going to put the ornamental covers back on the valve covers?

Post Title:
Posted by: Clifton at 8:53 PM 10/5/2008

The wire loom looks great. Better than factory.

FWIW, my Taurus fan pulls about 60A on startup and runs at 30A on high, 15A on low.

Post Title: Re: (Clifton)
Posted by: gs14racer at 6:03 PM 10/16/2008

Well Ive been really busy with work lately so these arent the most current pics but for what its worth the car is running, just have to finish up the brake lines.

Undercoated the both wheel wells

Made my own high pressure steel braided ps hose, and did the nylon braid for the return to the power steering cooler. They run real close to the headers so i put the heat sleeving over them.

Ballerific alluminum drive shaft

Here you can see where i put the fuel filter, the engine bay was too cluttered so i put it on the bottom of the car, the zip ties where just temporary, its all clamped in place now

Here you can see the power steering cooler, hopefully it wont boil over any more

Also got the expansion tank mounted , its at the highest point so i should have no air bubble problem since the radiator is lower than the water outlet

Also got rid of the origin sides and rears and bought another set of jdm zenki sides and valences, much better imo.

Thats it for now maybe ill get some dyno vids in a week or two then its off to paint.

praise the lord, the engine is done. It starts and runs and idles and all, i have a few loose ends such as the catch can and such but nothing major. Now i can paint this f@cker and take it to the track.

Will be getting the radiator support powdercoated soon as well

Heres some pics

Should be able to take it for a spin around the block at least tommorow, just have to clean up this mess

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)

Well busy weekend, got the front end mocked up and hood pins installed and pretty much got eberything mechanical wise put together.

Which culminated in this

YouTube - VH45de S14 first drive again 2008

The whine you hear is the p/s pump as i had no fluid in the system,

We ended up removing everything that wasnt bolted down and took it for a spin, unfortunatly the vid is pretty uneventful. When i was further from my neighborhood i opened her up, it will destroy 315 azenis from a roll in second gear and if you go first thru third its amazing, i couldnt take it out too long as it was getting dark, but all in all great ride

Heres some more pics

Serious buisness

Well made it to the dyno today, did a couple of pulls with a few different tunes.

1st pull base line, headers / exhaust

2nd pull left the vtc till redline no other changes, picked up a few hp up top tq remained the same

3rd pull vtc was stock a few degrees of timing and a little leaner
Big diference in tq below 4000. Best pull of the the night.

So the most power was 283hp 293wtq. I think with a little more fine tuning 300whp 300lbft tq is very achievable, we shall see. Ill have the .drf's tommorow and can over lay the 3 on winpep.

Got the files and better graphs today, just for fun heres the new motor baseline vs my original setup basiclly 100kmile motor (red) vs 227kmile motor (blue). Much better to start with.

Heres the baseline pull (blue) vs the vtc turned off ( red) made about an 8hp increase up top. This new motor is running a little rich for some reason, dont know if the wideband from the dyno was good though, got to check a few things on the engine.

This is a tune with timing and fuel made the best increases down low almost 40lbft of tq below 4000rpm.

so does the VVT on these engines work continuously like on the VQ35DE or is it an on/off 20 degree switch? I've searched and can't find an answer. I wonder because I saw your VVT on/off dyno.

If this is a case I wonder if one of the continuously variable pulleys could be retrofitted

...oh, and your car is beautiful dude! My goal is to have a project just like yours!

I've had good luck with own made intakes with putting velocity stacks on them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ories

I realize your probably not going to run with just a MAF on the end of your intake tube all the time....

A tad off topic but is there any block adapters that will work like the tomei one for the SR20 to relocate the filter and hook up an oil cooler?

Post Title: Re: (ZenkiFactor)

Well ill be updating here in the coming weeks, the car is almost done and coming out awesome i might add. I cant wait to get this out on the track.

I will be probably spraying some nitrous thru this when i go to the drag strip, we shall see.

As for the oil relocation kit, the oil filter is the same as the 300zx and probably the skyline as well. So any relocation kit for either of those cars will work. Just cross reference the oil filter and if they are the same part number, there you go.

What size tubing are you using for the main cooling hoses? I had some ghetto rigged lines from the parts store on my last setup but I'd like to make some hardlines this time around. I'm having a hell of a time finding 1 3/8" aluminum tubing.

Posted by: gs14racer at 6:35 PM 2/21/2009

Ok swo my hands where falling of wetsanding not ot mention i couldnt get it right, so i bought this kit from 3m called the perfect finish.

It comes with some 1500 / 3000 grit discs and an adapter for the DA sander, and 3 different compound, not to mention a dvd with instructions. It cost me 100 at the local body supply.

All i can say is wow, what would have taken me 2-3 days i did in a matter of hours.

Here is the process with the 1500 disc on the sander

Wiped down and ready for 3000 grit, matte black FTL

Here you can see the difference with the 3000 grit on the left and 1500 grit on the right. With the 3000 the surface already starts to shine before you even buff

This is complete, my camera died on battery so i didnt get the in between steps

Sick thread, sick car, sick skills Seriously though, very inspiring man!

So not to start a new thread I have a couple of questions about the vh45de into s14 swap:

1) Do you need to relocate anything? (like PS/Fuse box or any of that kind)? for fitment?
2) Was wiring hard? I know Mazworx know makes a ready-to swap harness but its around $250
3) The tach/speedo issue, it seems like everyone is having, is it off or its working?
4) Do you have to get a custom radiator? or where can you get one? (maybe ka will work?)

Sorry for noob questions I looked through the thread but haven't found the answers, anyway sick swap man!

Post Title: Re: (vda240)
Posted by: gs14racer at 9:03 PM 2/24/2009

Well i relocated the p.s pump and the alternator for fitment, the wiring is not that hard you just need the service manual like all other swaps, i got the tach to work by re-calibrating it, the stock radiator might work but i havent tried.

In other the news, i took the car out tonight to do some flogging and broke the transmission. It wont go into 2nd, 4th , or reverse. I might have broke a shift fork or the c clip that holds the stopper and wedged the shaft. Who knows ill have to take the trans out tommorow and possible replace it with one of my spares. Sigh, if it aint one things its another.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: tmorgan4 at 9:14 PM 2/24/2009

Does any company out there make a built transmission? It is by far the weakest part of my drivetrain. I'm not excited to see that you already broke your transmission and your tires are half the size of mine!

Post Title: Re: (tmorgan4)
Posted by: gs14racer at 7:05 AM 2/25/2009

I dont think i broke any gears, like i said its probably the c clip in the snout of the tranny that holds the stopper for the rod, it probably either fell off or broke and is holding the shaft from going in.

I dont think its really possible to break the z32 tranny sub 550lbft of torque after the abuse ive seen them take on slicks no less. TMO are you slamming thru the gears at 7500 rpm also?

Tranny will be out tonight to inspect, im sure its something stupid

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: CrazyTrance at 10:11 AM 2/25/2009

Well that really sucks..

Do you have any pictures of how you mounted your PS pump? I'd really like to see where you put it.

That is a painless wiring kit right? Those things are sweet. I'd really like to see what you were all able to cut out of the harness. I've thought about tackling that and re-doing my setup but i dont have a spare car to drive haha.

Yea tell me about it, unfourtunatly i dont have pics of how its mounted right now. I used an altima pump this time clocked in a different direction with a custom bracket, but in the stock location for the VH, the alternator is sitting where the a/c compressor used to be.

As for the harness , i made it myself from scratch, i special ordered the fusebox to my specs from bussman, actually the rep i spoke to at bussman was a 240z enthusiast and just sent it to me for free . It took me a few weeks but i eliminated alot especially length but kept a few things. Obviously all the lights where kept, i also kept the p. windows and sunroof and radio. Everything works like stock, the only thing i omitted was the mirrors and power locks.

Before the original harness and fuesbox/relaybox was 51.5 lbs front to back. My harness weighs in at a feather lite 9.2 lbs

edit'
forgot to mention i also cut out

all ac/heater wiring
rear defrost
factory amplifier wiring

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: CrazyTrance at 10:39 AM 2/25/2009

Yeah thats badass. A great way to recover some of the weight added up front. Did you use new connectors also?

And you should try and get a picture of it for me haha. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to mount a 240 pump to it. Keep running into the damn sway bar. My engine is mounted super low too, so that doesn't help.

Post Title: Re: (CrazyTrance)
Posted by: kingkilburn at 12:36 PM 2/25/2009

Here is a possible solution for you.

http://flyinmiata.com/tech/depower.php?x=1

http://www.ka-t.org/forums/vie...elete

The first link is a properly depowered rack and the second is a bracket to eliminate the pump from the belt system.

Post Title: Re: (kingkilburn)
Posted by: tmorgan4 at 12:45 PM 2/25/2009

My transmission is in rough shape too. I most definitely drove it like a race car with the stock VG33.

This picture was BEFORE I put the VH in. It still worked fine so I'll wait until I blow it up.

Post Title: Re: (tmorgan4)
Posted by: gs14racer at 7:53 PM 2/25/2009

TMO your tranny is thrashed, you realize those are teeth right. Aww who am i kidding that thing will probably last forever, i had an sr20 tranny a few years back that had even more teeth drain out one day, it lasted me 60,k miles and i sold it to my friend and hes put about 25k miles so who knows lol.

Any way just as i thought the c clip came loose, you can see the washer and clip in the first pic at the bottom then the gouges and indentations on the shaft and housing where it rattled around, i probably installed it wrong the first time, anyway cleaned it up, put it back in and we are on the road again.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: Ptotherice at 7:21 PM 3/2/2009

Quick question, is there a way to keep the A/C from the Q45? I'm going to start my own in about a week and was wondering if it was possible to get A/C into the car.

Post Title: Re: (Ptotherice)
Posted by: EMK at 7:26 PM 3/4/2009

I second that.

I would say just by looking at it though that it seems like if you clearance the frame for the alternator to stay in the same spot that the ac compressor will fit ever so slightly depending on how you mount your motor. It looks like it would have to be removed and put back in with from the bottom.

I know that for me if it fits in any possible location than I'm keeping it because I HATE the heat 80 is the limit for me.

Post Title:
Posted by: Carl H at 7:59 AM 3/5/2009

no way in hell to retain the ac, its just a lost cause with this swap.

Posted by: gs14racer at 9:03 AM 3/5/2009

HA 80 its 78 today in the middle of march lol, summers here can get to 100 degrees plus humidity.

You need 240 a/c.... 2 windows down 40 mph lol.

Post Title: Re: (gs14racer)
Posted by: EMK at 8:54 AM 3/7/2009

Yeah I know same thing here in NC. That's why I must figure out how to keep AC. I'm thinking electric power steering or losing it all together may do the trick.

Thought i would update

Finally got my battery cable routed, went thru the subframe, also put a 150 amp breaker in the back just in case.

Got my interior in, also put in the 5 point harness, still need a steering wheel though.

Snapped some pics of the whole car today, wish i could say its done but i still have so much to do...

Time for a rear diffuser?

Jerry I gotta say you are the man Well Done!.

Ok I definitely don't have the equipment and tools to make anything custom as shown here in this thread with Jerry's project. But I do have a engine hoist , air gun, engine stand and all the space and basic tools to do an overhaul.
I'm gonna need a Complete kit for an almost perfect plug and play as much as possible. I haven' seen a list made yet so if there is already one I'm sorry I tried looking.

MazworX VH45DE S Chassis KIT:

Motor mounts
Machine work
Hardware
Adapter plate
Shifter
Brackets
One-piece driveshaft
Speedo Recalibrator
Z32 Transmission
VH45DE Intake System
VH45DE Custom Headers
Conversion Harness

Other Parts Non MazworX:

Custom Exhaust Piping with Mufflers
Radiator & Hoses
Electric Fan
Clutch
Flywheel
Starter
VH45DE Main Harness & ECU
Power Steering Cooler with Lines (Not sure if this part is actually needed)

Not listed:

Total weight with Engine Tranny Harness and Accessories

This is all I can come up with from what I've read so far. Basically I personally need this to be an almost near perfect plug n play list of things to get as possible. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff so let me know.

Thanks,

Freddy

Jerry used the S14 alternator on a custom bracket he fabricated so he didn't need to cut his framerail. Using the Mazworx kit it directs you to cut the framerait so that the VH45 alternator on the OEM bracket will fit.

Post Title:
Posted by: T45 at 3:50 AM 6/21/2009

Stupid queston...

If the goal of drifting is to get the car sideways, wouldn't you want less tire on the road, not as wide as possible? Does the wider tire give more predictible traction? Seems harder on the engine to me but I suppose once the tires break loose it's not that bad. I guess it just goes against common sense. Please enlighten me...

Post Title:
Posted by: Mettler at 7:49 AM 6/21/2009

I read an article about this some time ago... it said it's not so much about tyre width, as contact patch surface area.

The weight from that corner of the car acting down on the wheel doesn't change... and by widening the tyre, you reduce the length of the contact patch, making it wider across the surface of the tyre.

In cornering, when camber changes and weight shifts off the wheel, you can imagine this strip of contact patch narrowing to a small area, as opposed to a narrower tyre where a more elongated section of contact patch would theoretically remain.

Basically, there is an optimal width tyre for each application, taking into account the other factors such as weight and suspension geometry. Once you go wider than that you are changing contact patch shape during cornering, but with a less optimal result.

This is also dependent on suspension settings of course. Will try dig up the article, it was a good read!
