has anyone done it, and what does it require for a exhaust manifold/elbow.

these are underated turbos.

Link doesn't work. IIRC the HX35 is a twin scroll T3 turbo so you'd need a twin scroll T3 manifold.

thank you, so far so go good thats a big help.

if you know where exactly to find an elbow or twin scroll manifold that doesnt run 1000$ please post.

ill start searching,

Hahaha that's where things complicate a bit. Full-Race is the only twin scroll manifold that I can find and like you said it's 1k plus. I don't know if you could get away with using a non TS mani on a TS turbo. You probably could, you'd most likely only lose a bit of response but that is a guess honestly.

Thats a good point now that i think about, it wouldnt loose that much response.

it might also be possible to place another compressor housing on the bottom of the HX45.

and for the ELBOW. any ideas?

You can use a non-twin scroll manifold on a TS turbo, you would just lose the benefits of twin scroll. So your twin scroll Holset turbo would basically become non-twin scroll.

Now stick with me on this one, ahhhh make your own manifold! Weird concept huh... You could honestly put it all together for less than $500, thought about doing it myself. I just wasn't able to find a good holset at the time so it went on the way side. If you put the flange in over the 2nd runner you'll have plenty of clearance and should help spool a tad bit. The hardest thing to find is the sr20 header flange, can be kind of expensive too.

log manifold w/t3 twin scroll flange = $125 or less3" u-bend w/flanges = $75Holset turbo = $50-$600 (could go either way)

homemadeturbo.com

Bullseye Performance makes different sized turbine housings to allow more versatility with these turbos too. They are currently working on a T3 .55 housing with a 3" v-band. Direct bolt on.

OH and most holset use a v-band exhaust flanges, so that should help with the install too.

For that much money, its undeniably an amazing set up. im seeing holsets for about 200 - 300.

I have little welding knowledge and i am in school, I dont have much time for a project like this but... If I were to weld it, I'd have to factor in the cost of a TIG welder. and the piping. cut and measure each piece and get it all together. its probably not too difficult actually

i could cut the header flange off a cheap ebay manifold. (maybe not the best idea) homemadeturbo has mostly honda motors, but I get the idea.

My options realistically would be get a regular t3 manifold, and change the housing like you said.

or use the T3 on the holset anyway and loose a little compression.i could live without twin scroll, though it is incredible.

I am a relative, layman so I dont understand what

[ 3" V-band ]a [ 3" u-bend with flanges ] and when you say

what do you mean

A v-band is a type of exhaust flange, uses a clamp instead of your standard bolt on flange.

A 3" u-bend, is 3" exhaust piping bent into the shape of a U. Makes fabricating a dump pipe relatively easy.

The second runner is basically saying in front of the #2 cylinder exhaust port. Second from the front that is.

And you wouldn't need a TIG welder, MIG would do just fine. TIG welding isn't exactly simple. Anyone can run a MIG though, just pull the trigger haha. And you can probably rent a welder from somebody. I've seen places that do that but who knows. Or just take it to a welding shop.

thanks alot, this is a good thread. More people should know about thisits a viable substitute to spending 1100 on a gt2871r.

This is a very interesting thread to me... I was planning on going the gt3071r route, but when I can by one of these brand new for $800 I dont think that I can pass it up. Especially when a gt30 runs in the $1200 to $1300 area. Does anyone run one of these turbos? I've only seen one of these on an rb25 and the spool up time was amazing! What rpms would you hit full boost on a sr? Somewhere in the mid to high 4 grand area? What are the AR specs on a HX35? Are they oil and water cooled or just oil? If anyone has one it would be sweet if they would write a little info about it!

yup, very interesting thread.

full boost is at 5400? i think, maybe lower. its twin scroll so full boost comes fast.

you can find them for a lot less used, as low as 300$. and there 50$ rebuild kits available also on ebay. thats where i saw the holsets and there are specs too but i am in a rush i couldnt find them.

and there is the garrett t3/t04b also, those rebulit run around 500$top mount, but thats ok.

I dont know what to with they downpipe on a top mount or how much they run.

Look to me like everybody fabs there own elbow to connect to a regular bottom mount style downpipe.

I have all the tools and resources that I need to fabricate just about everything that i might need so stuff like that isnt really a problem lol.

I'm starting to lean towards the to4b, i like garrett turbos. What AR and trim are thinking about for either the garrett or holset. I'm thinking a .63AR housing, with a trim of in the 50 to 57mm range...

If you go with the HX35 your going to need to get a manifold with a wastegate flange, because you'll need an EWG, the HY35's are Internally gated and came on the Automatic cummins'. I would suggest going with a Holset over a Garret, Holset's are heavy duty and used to seeing high boost for hundreds of thousands of miles in diesel applications, so im sure it can handle whatever your SR will throw at it.

Very true... about the reliability.I also just noticed that almost all the garrett t3/t4 turbos are only oil cooled, unless you get into the GT series and those are pretty pricey. The HX35's are all watercooled also then. The reason I'm so concerned is that I dont want to have to buy an oil cooler for my car to compensate for a turbo that is only oil cooled.

Man now that I actually looked I've seen that there are a ton of people running Hx35s. And with the price you cant beat it. Holset FTW!!

but they are using twin scroll manifolds also?

the only ones that I have found runs over 1000$ http://phase2motorsports.store....html

Holsets are off the chain, no doubt about it.

Its great that you have the tools, I dont have the space to do fab work, anything I have is bolt on... for now.

From what I can see in most of the videos most people seem to make their own manifolds or probably just use non TS ebay specials.

I'd probably go the Ebay special route and brace the hell out of it lol. I could stand the slightly slower spool for the knockout punch on the top end.

I hate to keep babbling about the about the water/oil cooled stuff... but they are only oil cooled. I just realized that those turbos are made to run on 5.9L Cummins engines and see a lot more boost and heat that it will ever see on a SR though lol. Now I just have to get through this semester and then there will be one sitting in my shop waiting to get slapped on my s14 SR lol.

Looking at the phase2 manifold i think that it would be possible to make a twin scroll flange for a cheap manifold. You would prolly have to put a new flange on the cheapy for the Holset to fit anyway.

making a manifold is the best way, Im sure you could do.I've got to read up on threads for making manifolds. its a great skill.

Thats great that your going to get one, unless I find a dump that will work my a t3 and my exhaust, I gotta look else where.

but its a great turbo for many different reasons and a variety of motors.

Full-Race makes a 3 inch V-Band Dump/Downpipe. I think it's location would be based off of where their exhaust manifold would place the turbo though.

Kalypso123 if your basically looking for a manifold and dump pipe for a t3/t4, Treadstone makes an excellent cast manifold and have a dump to go along with it. I wouldn't consider them cheap but they are far cheaper then the other options your looking at. They usually list the kit on ebay but I didn't see any on there to refer you to. But, anyway here is the sitehttp://www.treadstoneperforman...=sr20

i have an HX35 on my 5.9 liter deisel that has ridiculously high compression and it still takes couple seconds to spool. Why do you all want this turbo that is wayyy over kill and is only going to give you 3k ( if that) of usable power? I know they have smaller turbos that should suit a 4cyl much better.

The HX35 spools up a lot faster than a lot of comparable turbos. The twin scroll makes a pretty big difference.

Thanks Driftin that useful...

But i am still doubting the overall t3 twin scroll setup...the gt2871r .64... is less overall headache. and faster spool...

we'll see, if i get the urge to do something exotic ill think about it, right now its about saving some $ and having making a great build
