Subwoofer Question

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hello everyone,

I was thinking of getting a sub woofer hooked up to my EX35 2010 Journey Infiniti. What do you recommend? I was thinking of getting one Type X Alpine in a small enclosure, that will sit in the back. Any other ideas? Has anyone done it? If so, any pictures?

Thank you,
G3LO

EDITED:

Hello All,

Finally got it installed and ready to enjoy. Keep in mind that I like listening to music with quality vs just ripping the bass out of proportion. Hence, the video recorded with the JL is not playing near anything close to a quarter of the way. I turned down the gain on the amp fully down and increased the bass slightly on the factory deck. When you are in the vehicle it already sounds like the bass overpowers the vocals. I am happy! Here are a few pictures and a link to the video!

Enjoy,
G3LO

All day:
(1)JL Audio 10" 10w7 1000W
http://www.dealercostcaraudio.com/10w7.aspx

(1)JL Audio 500/1v2 Monoblock Amplifier
http://www.dealercostcaraudio.com/5001v2.aspx

This is good for everything from a little extra bass with your music to setting off car alarms down the street, whatever your taste.

What about Type X Alpine? I already have a Kenwood Amp from past system that I want to use. Also, what kind of box would work nicely with either Subwoofer?

What model amp is it? You can get really good sound if you shop smart and get components that work well together... I can tell you how the Alpine's will work with the amp if I know what it is. It's not going to be as nice as the JL though. The box is based on how much inside volume is recommended by the subwoofer manufacturer. Get that model number and I can tell you what will work good for both.

Hey Zack, it is long distance for me to send messages. I am in Canada. It will be like $1 a message for me. We can just communicate through the forums. My name is Oleg by the way. In regards to purchasing the 10w7. If I were to go with it, what kind of box could I get for it? Is 1 enough? And what about 12w7? Also, will my AMP be sufficient?

A Type-X would be total overkill; your amp can't produce enough power for it's potential. I would recommend a Type-R - SWR-1023D as it operates at 4 ohms, which is ideal for your amplifier. This subwoofer requires anywhere from 0.5 to 1.0 cubic feet of sealed enclosure volume (closer to 1.5ft^3 if it's vented).

The manual recommends an enclosure 12.5" x 12.5" x 10" which creates a gross internal volume of 0.6ft^3 and a net internal volume of 0.5ft^3 for optimum performance.

The manual gives examples of how to set it up, you will want to follow example #1 for the 1023D.

Hello Speedeast,

If I were to purchase a JL 10W7 which amp+box would work well? May you provide me with links? Also a second option with Type X which box and amp will work with that. I am thinking of selling everything I have and going with a different system.

I am a big fan of JL, obviously. If you're looking for sound quality with different types of music, I would definitely go with a 10" sub - it's clearer and crisper than the 12" and has almost as much of a frequency range.

The R-Type I listed above would be your best bet... it's affordable and it is a quality subwoofer.
Here is a SWR-1022D that is just as compatible, and VERY competitively priced!

I see. I was looking for something with more punch. You got me hooked on JL from your previous posts. What would be ideal box and amp for the JL 10w7. I would like to see if I can budget it.

Thing is I am in Canada. Shipping would be a fortune. And how much would you charge for your Enclosure?

That's true... I would only charge what is cost me to make. I can check into it later, but let me check into that JL for you.

Yeah for sure that would be great. That site you showed me has amazing prices. I never came across it. I compared prices to Amazon and your site is cheaper!

This'll solve the enclosure problem:

Good deal too!

For an amp:
http://www.dealercostcaraudio.com/10001v2.aspx

That's the setup I would do! It's pricey, but it's phenomenal!

That setup with 4 ga oxy-free power wire and 8 ga speaker wire. You can mount the amp right on top of the enclosure and you're good to go.

yeah I love the deal on the JL SUB, but the AMP is extremely pricey. If I go with a cheaper amp there is no way it will work great right?

I see. would that amp be sufficient? The 500WATT one as opposed to the 1000WATT one?

Yeah, it's a perfect match. It's also the manufacturer recommended amplifier. It'll come with instructions that'll show you how to hook it up to get everything top-notch. This sub will hit as hard and sound clearer/better than a cheaper pair of 12s.

Would it hit harder then my current set up. KFC-XW1222D 12" (2 of them) with a KAC-9104D AMP?

I would keep your subs if I were you and just upgrade your amp; it's not enough to power a pair of Kenwood Excelon 12s

It would hit harder only because your subs aren't reaching their potential, if they were, then no.

Thing is, it takes up to much room, I wanted to increase trunk space by getting something powerful and small.

That setup will hit pretty damn hard and take up a lot less room. Honestly, I would try running 1 of your subs on the amp you have and see how that hits... might be surprised by what you find. Your amp is enough to power 1.

^ That way you'll get an awesome system for $0 minus what you sell the extra sub for plus what you buy a single enclosure for.

You mentioned I keep one Kenwood and my amp. Would my current AMP be sufficient to run 1 JL 10w7?

It should be enough, we'll just have to devise a way to hook it up to run at an ideal impedance.

Okay, maybe I should try the 499.00 package JL 10w7 with enclosure. And hook it up with my existing Kenwood AMP.

Hey speedeast,

I ordered that 499.00 10w7 with small enclosure. I also came across the HO box, it is lengthy and space consuming but have you ever tried it? What makes it so special? Is there a big difference in terms of the one I ordered with the HO enclosure?

Thank you!

The high output enclosure is chambered and ported, never used one of JL's. Congrats on buying the 10w7, can't wait to see what you think... when I get a minute, I'll look into how you'll need to hook it up.
