I've seen pics of the z33 transmission and the gears look SWEET! very beefy. My local shop is convincing me to go the Z32 route because he said in his experiences the 5spds are almost always stronger than the 6spds. I'm torn between the two, is there any proof that the z32 is in fact stronger than a z33 transmission?

I've heard the Z33 transmissions can take 500-550 hp pretty safely. I know the tq is the more important figure but I haven't seen those numbers being thrown around.

Whats your application?

Google 800hp sr20det and look at his build.z32 trans. As for the z33 it is also pretty beefy but I've heard has synchro issues on the early models. Also the gear ratio on the z33 is sought out mainly for drifters due to the closer gear ratio. Z32 is almost identical gear ratio to the 240.

Thanks, the application is a s13 hatch with q45 rear end and axles. sr20det fully built, e85 isn't readily available so it might be race gas only depends on what I can get at the local airports

With your setup, and z32 trans would be a decent drag/freeway setup. Did you do your q45 rear end swap recently? If so, where did you get your 300zx tt axle? I can't find one anywhere.

I got the rear end in without the axle, but I found a guy selling parts off a wrecked 300zx tt that has one and my local tuner shop can get one although he hasn't quoted me a price yet. If it's too expensive I am going to have a machine shop cut and re-spline the q45 axle. Seems like a good route, look into it

I thought about that but I've only got the DS q45 axle. By the time I get the other axle and spend the 100 bucks in machining ill be over my head. Nissan parts are pretty slim pickings over here.

Finding the z32 axle is gunna put you in over your head regardless. It's a bullet I had to bite, but it will be nice having a solid rear end that I won't have to worry about when I throw slicks on the car.

Yeah it'll be nice not having to sweat breaking stuff. I've found a used one for $250 shipped but ouch! Like you said...ill probly just have to bite the bullet. Stronger than the aftermarket axles though so can't really complain. Do you drift? If so I'd go z33 trans...that would be fun!

i would probably side with the z32 transmission because if it grenaded or anything you could source a 300zx transmission easier than a 350z transmission.
who needs a 6 speed anyways?!?

Do any of you guys have the ratios for the z33 gearbox?

Here are some other options:

- S14 stock -------------z32-------------getrag s6s-420g-------------2JZ-GTE V160 6-Spd
1. : 3.321 -------------- 3.21 ---------------- 4,23 ---------------------- 3.827
2. : 1.902 -------------- 1.93 ---------------- 2,5 ----------------------- 2.360
3. : 1.308 -------------- 1.30 ---------------- 1,67 --------------------- 1.685
4. : 1.000 -------------- 1.00 ---------------- 1,23- -------------------- 1.312
5. : 0.838 -------------- 0.75 --------------- 1.000 --------------------- 1.000
6. : - NA -------------------------------------- 0,83 --------------------- 0.793

It's not that simple, you can't just bolt up a V160 to an sr20. Plus, that transmission is like 4 grand .

I was talking to some 350z guys and one of them went though 2 Z33 trannys already, he said they are notorious for weak 3rd gears. This made me lean a bit farther on the z32 side.

No of course you cant bolt any of them right up, but its not a big deal to modify the clutchhousing.
In my opinion the z32 is the best alternative for a street/high hp car.

I'm sure it's much harder than to just mess around with the bellhousing of the v160 to get it to work.

Probably different splines and in wost case the "bearing" for the inpur shaft has to be modified somehow.
I havent said its a good alternative, i just compared the ratios.
