Hi guys, my first post here on the Nico boards. Nice forum you guys got going here :)

Anyhoo, I am the proud owner of a NA Z32 (90 300zx) and Im looking for a new project...

Ive seen some pictures in Japan of Sr20det converted Z32s, but have yet to see or hear of one done in the US. I wouldnt mind having the first SR powered Z32 in the country

But before I start my project there are some issues I need to adress mostly dealing with the overall dimensions and layout of the Sr20det.

Now, it seems as though The Vg30de (TT) is basically a SR with 2 more cylinders and a V configuration. Correct me if I am wrong, but They both use 3 wire Coil Packs, a Mistubishi Crank ANgle Sensor, and use almost identical Injectors and rail(s). Also, I have heard that the Z32's ECU mapping is so similar to that of a Silvia ECu the Z32 unit can be used (however remapped for the SR) with an SR engine.

Does anyone know which motor (red Top, black s14-s15, etc) would be the best candidate for the Z32? (Assuming that all SRs have nearly identical external dimensions; see question below)

Would someone be able to supply me with relatively exact and accurate Outer dimensions of a fully assembled SR20det?

-I need the motor's height (from bottom of sump section of oil pan to top of valve cover). Also, if someone is able to give me the amount of space between the top edge of the Transmission and the top of the Valve cover I would be delighted

-the width of the motor; top(from edge of OEM intake manifold to edge of OEM exhaust mani/turbo) and bottom (oil pan dimensions)

-the length of the motor and transmission seperately and together. *The motors length from front to back measured from the Front Crank pulley to rear main of block. Length of 5speed tranmission bellhousing (and overall height of trans bellhousing if possible)

I appreciate greatly anyones efforts in helping me with this :)

THanks guys!

if you were to do the sr in the z32, i would have to say that the s15 sr20 would probly be the best, b/c it has the most power out of all the sr engines in stock form

S13 SR's are the best if your looking for the cheapest engine. The S15 gets the majority of its power from a slightly larger T28 turbo and 480cc injectors. Both of which can be put onto an S13 SR for about $1200(new parts) and some tuning.

Sounds like a good idea and I know you can get nice power out of the SR...but why not an RB series engine...since the Z32's are heavier than the Silvia. That way you'd have a higher hp number to start with and be closer to the Z's original power.

Understood. Seems like the Black Top s15 will be the way to go.

The only thing I worry about concerning the swap is a possible contradiction between the RHD steering knuckle (rod down to rack) and the exhaust manifold and turbo...

Are top mount manifolds relatively easy to come by? if so, I doubt that their would be any fitment issues.

Well, I have also considered an RB powered Z (either an RB25det or 26dett) but have found that the space limitations are pretty insane, and some serious fab work with th manifolds is required. I figure with an SR, I have tons of room for a HUGE snail, plus absolute simplicity in piping and fuel delivery.

With an SR I can keep alot of costs down (the VG fuel delivery is perfect for a high HP SR utilizing OEM pump and filter although a FPR will be needed ) and the lost weight in the engine (about 300lbs worth of weight will be dropped) will derive a better Fr/Rr weight distrobution. (Stock is 52/48 fr/rr, with the SR, at least a 51/49 or even a perfect 50/50 can most likely be realized)

I am not looking to build a monster drag car, but a good handling street car with around 350-425 RWHP while keeping the RWTQ above 315-320.

My second struggle will be finding a perfect turbo set-up that wont lag too badly. I hope to find a setup that will reach full boost at ~4500rpm with at least half of that realized at 3000rpm.

Im a dreamer, but a realist.

motor mounts will line up... don't know if the motor is too long tho. Also no FMIC kit for the 300 single turbo that i know of... i don't think the NA 300 has the turbo fuel pump... might also run into a length issue... i would guess the i4 is a bit longer than the vg30... also to get 400+ hp outta the SR you seriously have to have your act togather $$$$ 350 isn't too bad but once you pass around 400 you start to run into all kinda stuff... not to dusuade you from this swap ( i think it would definately be interesting) but you can get a VG30DETT for cheaper than the sr20

You are correct, NA and TT fuel pumps are different, but i have retrofitted the TT pump onto my NA.

Your points are well made Rob. A VG30DETT is cheaper, but the fact that they are 2x more expensive to mod is a serious issue, plus if youhave ever worked on a VG30de(tt or not) you know that it can be a royal pain in the a**.

Right now its more of a quest to be different than a search for power. Plus this SR dyno chart got me excited :)

Although from the URL of the chart, I am assuming that a $1500+ standalone system was used.

Still thats a fat curve for a 4 banger

Ok I was just wondering if you had considered that option as well as the SR, and I thought about the length/clearance issues with the RB after I posted...DOH!

Anyways, it sounds like you will have one hell of a good handling car when you get done.

Keep us posted and good luck,-Jon-

THanks buddy. Who knows.... My plans could very well change with the Z.

I am just truly exploring my options, and the SR has been the most interesting option thus far.

Bobby, that 423 is good. But this 474 on stock bottom end is better :D

Wow. I am impressed withtha chart. Even though the lag is somewhat harsh (blasphemy I know!) for what I am looking for, that is damn impressive.

Also, is the stock bottom end harmonically balanced and weighted to push an 8000+RPM redline?

Any specs on the motor? Turbo, A/R, manifolds, etc? Also, I assume that is done with 720cc injectors???

ANyone care to comment on the reliability of a 450chp SR motor?

yeah, 450hp isn't reliable. things will eventually break. you might get 4 months without a problem, or 2 years. but its not going to last forever. i'm willing to accept this...shaun

If you're going to be building the engine, do some research on the S13 redtops. They have the high-port head design, which provides better flow characteristics. To get reliable amounts of 300+ hp out of an SR20, you're going to need to rebuild it down to the rods. You'll also need some good engine management (Electromotive, HalTech, AEM, etc).

I believe that the engine will need a rebuild, because the engines are coming out of wrecked cars that have been most likely driven hard for at least 60,000 miles. If that dyno chart that Buud put up is of the Phase2 car, you might want to go read some of the fine print on the FreshAlloy forums, and their webpage. They were running the engine at such insane hp levels, because they're ready to rebuild it and even have another block sitting on the shelf.

My engine is currently sitting on a jackstand at the garage. If there's time in the next week or so, I'll get down there with a digital camera and a tape measure. I think an SR20DET powered Z32 would be a really nice car. The styling on the Z32 and the S13 are very similar.. especially in the front end. I get the sense that the Z32 might be a little wider, but I've never checked the measurements. One of the cool thing about Nissan's is, they're nearly infinitely interchangeable. If people are dropping SR20s and VG30s into 1970's era 510's, I bet you can drop an SR20 into a Z32.

Be sure to take lots of pictures along the way! :D

Bobby: very cool! Regarding turbo choices: There are plenty of bottom mount, stock location turbos that fit the SR with little to no modification. A garrett 2835 would satisfy the power goals you have without too much lag, and fits pretty easily I think.
