I have a timing belt issue, I have rebuilt the engine; new rotating assembly, rebuilt the heads and replaced the valves, engine runs great. I had the timing belt run off track to the back towards the heads and rubbing the steel plates. I now have replaced the belt a second time and I did not cheap out on replacing the 3 idler pulleys as I did the first time but the same results. The tensioner seems to be keeping the belt tight by deflection checks and I did follow the forward 10 back 120 rotation when checking the deflection. Another point I did not deck the block or heads.

Is the beveled washer at the base of the lower drivers side pulley suppose to fit inside or sit slightly proud of the mounting base of the idler pulley?
Is there some other things that can cause this?

Maybe one of the idlers is not square with the belt?

What would be a good way to check pulley square?

Did you install the Two washers at the crank pulley? Should have one on each side so it keeps it in track. If you have the one closer to the engine missing, the belt will move to the toward the engine. The one missing further away, closer to the radiator, it will move away from the engine.

I think I have the problem figured out. I was looking at the diagrams for the idler pulleys an I noticed that the pulley that is on the power side (drivers side) does NOT have a washer at the base. I must have left it hanging there during the rebuild as to not lose it and installed it incorrectly at the base of the pulley, I'm a DA.

I will double check the crank pulley washers when I tear back into it this weekend but I'm pretty sure I put them in correctly. I will be replacing the studs and removing the washer that is in the wrong place.

I'll post my results.

Note to others that may look at this thread.
Do not cheap out and not replace EVERYTHING on a a 120k timing belt swap; pulleys, tensioner AND STUDS, unless you want to have lots of fun and do it several times.
BTW I really do have tons of fun working and tweaking on my Z

Thanks for your responses, Jason
