i have been doing some research and was looking for some input

i am contemplating swaping a z32 rear subframe into my car.

the axels for the z32 are about 3 inches longer total (1.5 on each side) than stock. so if i wanted to keep my rear the same width as stock, i would need j30 5 bolt axels. if i did that, would i be able to keep my stock rear hubs (4 bolt) and then later just put the z32 rear hubs and brakes in (plus doing the 5lug swap and z32 brakes up front) (i guess you have to have the old hubs pressed out, and the new ones pressed in or something like that, i cant' remember what it is, but i know you need a press for something).

or should i just use the knuckles (i think that is what it is called) which saves something like 6-8 lbs on each side since they are aluminum, and then then use my stock axels (after getting some different output shafts) etc...

i would like to do the whole subframe with some SPL subfram bushings, then get the SPL/KTS coilovers (getting z32 rears of course). which would let me use the z32 LSD and all that jazz.

the main reason why i am asking this is because i am trying to get the best bang for my buck so to speak. i love the idea of saving 16lbs of unsprung weight but if i do all of this at once (5lug, z32 brakes, suspension, rear subframe) it is going to be way expensive, so i am wondering if it is possible to just do this in stages. and possibly hold off on getting new wheels and doing the z32 brake upgrade/5lug conversion untill i have some extra cash.

sorry for the long winded post.

p.s. i have a 1992 s13

The rear subframe mounting points don't line up with the bolts on the 240, so you can't exactly swap the z32 subframe into your car.(if that's what you meant)

You can, however, utilize many of its parts. I too bought a z32 rear subframe and disected it of all its goodies(brakes, hubs, vlsd, and upright) and I put all of them on my car during the summer, minus the 5 lug swap which I sold.

Anyway, I did it all at once. I spent about 8 hours a day, 3 or 4 days a week. In all, it took over 3 weeks to complete the rear. It would have taken about 1-2 weeks if I hadn't broken certain parts in the process. :( This was while taking my time working alone and at my own pace.

If you wanted to do it in stages, you could do the vlsd swap first, then the knuckle swap, then the 5-lug/z-brake swap. This is in order from cheapest to most expensive.

If you have more questions on specific parts of the swap, just run a search and make a new thread. These swaps have been done time and time again. :)

My pleasure.

And when you're searching, it doesn't matter what the title of the thread is because it searches the keywords inside the posts, not in the title of the thread.

yeah, i know, it just gets tedious searching though 200 "help me" titled threads just to see that they only mentioned a z32 rear and subframe but not really in conjunction with each other, lol

oh, you wouldn't happen to know what the final gear ratio is in the NA z32 rear diff is would you.

and it is also a 5 bolt axel correct, so would i need to either get output shafts from a 6bolt rear (like a j30)

thanks again

The na z32 final drive is the same as the 240, 4.08. Yes, they're 5-bolt.
