Hey all, first post on this forum. I figured i do my fair share of lurking, might as well sign up for an account.

Anyway, I'm the middle of a clutch replacement on my 93 300zx. I had this thing replaced when i first bought the car a year and a half ago, and I thought it was a little strange for it to burn up that fast. Upon removing my transmission, i noticed a small drip of oil coming from around my rear main seal. So just in case i decided i would replace that, turns out the part that was actually leaking was the little rubber piece that goes between the seal retainer and the oil pan. On to my question. When i installed my rear main seal, i used a 2 foot long 2x4, and set it on the edge of the seal, and i tapped LIGHTLY around the edge of the seal until it was flush. I've read a lot of people doing it this way and no report of anyone having problems. However, when i look closely at the seal in the retainer, there are some small bends in the metal structure inside of the seal. I'm curious to see if you guys think it will be problematic and cause a leak. Let me know, thanks.

More information: I waited a week for the Nissan dealer to finally get this thing shipped in, and it cost $42.73. I'm now broke as hell and may have to go against my original plans of not cheaping out on a Fel-Pro seal if this thing is f*****.

Let me know guys, thanks ahead. uploading pics from my phone

Was oil actually leaking out of the rear main seal? Or just out of the half circle retainer to oil pan gasket? As you said, many people have used the 2x4 method to seat the RMS without any problems. As far as I know, the seal should sit flush without any bending. If you're worried that it could leak you can apply a really thin layer of rtv around the edge of the retainer and then reseat the RMS. To replace the other gasket I'm fairly certain you have to drop the oil pan.

If oil was leaking from the RMS or other seal onto the clutch, it will degrade much faster than it should. Clutches are not meant to be exposed to oil and it deteriorates them quickly.

BTW you don't always have to buy from the dealer to get OEM parts...

Here's an OEM one on ebay still in the Nissan bag for about $20:

And a Victor Reinz one for $24 w/ free shipping:

And a whole Fel-Pro RMS set for $17 shipped:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fel-Pro-BS40628 ... 1311wt_931

I know they sound cheap, but they are the same quality as an OEM one. Fel-Pro makes some of the best gaskets I've ever used and they usually improve on OEm designs/quality/material.
