I'm piecing together a Z brake swap, and I'm deciding to go all the way. I already know that I'm getting my front calipers from Advance Auto (reman units, but they'll work), the hardware for the pads from PDM racing, the SS lines from SPL (have the front set in the mail as we speak), and I have the 1 1/16" master cylinder being shipped right now. All that's left is to get some rotors and pads for the front. Since I'm running a slight budget, i'll probably only get some metal master pads and I'm looking at the cross drills on Heavy Throttle's site.

Tracking down the rear assembly is going to be tough. I have one prospective, but it's looking like he's selling only the upright, dust cover, and e brake assembly. I'm waiting for a reply on whether or not they come with calipers and rotors. None of the local yards have any Z32s, so they seem to be out of the question.

What other good resources are there to find the rear assembly. I could try and make a core swap at Advance with the rears like I'm doing with the fronts I suppose. Then I could go ahead and get the rear assy from that one guy. Then that leaves tracking down the horrendously expensive rear rotors.

those rear rotors are a pain to track down :(The calipers are readily available in most Nissan Salvage yards.

I say you should get the rear e-brake drum assembly from that one guy.

It's far more difficult to find someone selling the e-brake kit than it is finding someone selling the rear calipers. Try ebay for the rear calipers and rotors. Someone should be selling them.

Dammit dude, you should have posted this like a week earlier. My buddy just sold his Z32 brake setup. It was uprights to the wheel studs with ebrake assembly.

I forwent the rear z-brakes--since you have to do that whole parking cable swap crap, plus get a new master cylinder. Front Z-brakes are plenty for the s13, even 10"/twin piston Q45 brakes are a excellent improvement

You get props from me for taking that on :D

i'll do the rear brakes eventually, but for now i am going to concentrate on the front brakes. all I need now are rotors, calipers, pads, and the hardware.

You only need the fronts, they do most of the braking anyway, IMO, i think the Z32 rears are too much trouble for minimal gain. Unless your'e going out to chase Porsches @ VIR. Besides, Z brake parts are expensive as hell.

yes they are.

rears only do 10% of the braking, if that. i only considered them just to complete the brake setup. the big thing is that i originally thought that the guy was selling the uprights with the calipers and rotors as well. Then it became "do i want to spend $150 on e brakes?"

Exactly. Dude, i thought the same thing when a friend of mine unloaded some 26mm Z32 calipers on me--that i was going to do Z brakes all around, but after some research and reading how SCC"s project s13 had to have a new master cylinder, brakes locking up too soon, etc...I decided not to.

i nabbed a 17/16 master cylinder for 70 bucks. That's kind of the catalyst for getting off my butt and doing this swap.

I did the full front/rear/mc conversion at the same time as my move to 5lug. It was fun..um well maybe just okay. I didn't find the rear cables that bad. Oh well I am glad I just did it. I basically paid $150 shipped for z32 uprights, hubs, ebrake assy., caliper, cables.

If you just want some Brembo blanks for rotors I found that tirerack has a great price.

i'm going with the rotors that heavy throttle sells.

where did you manage to land a deal like that for the rear assy? the only set i've found was 175 shipped for the uprights, dust covers and ebrake assy.

Some guy in cali had a few rear subframes from z32's. I might could have even gotten the rotors, but figured they were heavy to ship. Paid $100+$50 for shipping. Found it on Zilvia or here about 8 months ago.

I ended up trading the alum. uprights to a local guy for steel rear uprights and some of the front 5lug conversion stuff. It was still expensive for the 5lug and brake upgrade. I figure $500-600 for all of it including ss lines, used rotors, spindles, hubs, ball joints, z32 MC and front calipers.

so far, i'm looking at the fronts costing me in the neighborhood of $420. that's for everything upfront and the master cylinder. and that of course, is including remanned calipers.

remember that the rear uprights from the Z32 use different mounting points for the struts. so if you get coilovers you need to get the bottom mounting of a Z32. and if you use regular struts and springs you need to weld on the mounting points from the Z32.

i have a set of stock rear Z struts. as an experiment, if I landed a set of Z uprights, I would try the Z strut. The dimensions are the same, and all I would have to do is make sure the top hat is rotated properly and it should fit.

I would never take a welder near a gas strut either. Last thing I want to do is heat the strut casing up.

I can say that the z32 uprights are superduty compared to the s13/14 units. And still ~7lbs lighter.

yep...i have a set of upright i'm yet to install. I have heard of using the z's shocks, but someone pointed out the valving was different i think. If i could get a hold of a z's fsm I'd be sure of this.

Also, as a note, it'll become easier to just do all 4 at the same time. I did the fronts, then the rears later, and it was a hassle getting the motivation. Good luck w/the rears too. Those bolts tend to like their place after 12+ years. I was doing everything w/weekend warrior tools, and I just had to shell the 20 bux for an impact wrench after hours of trying to loosen some bolts. E-brake is not "that necessary". The engine has plenty of hold if you engine bake. However, if you feel like getting the e-brake to work, i have found that cloth hanger wire does work :)
