Hi
Was driving the other day when the power steering pump failed, the pully and shaft came right through the front of the pump and all fluid was lost and all power steering! Replaced the pump with a refurbished unit but still no power steering. Used dextron fluid to refill and dont seem to have any leaks. Steering is not intermittent as iv heard on a few other post, there is no power steering at all. Before the pump exploded all was well with no issues at all. I expected if any hoses had been damaged to be losing fluid but there is no sign of any loss.

Completly lost as where to now!

Anybody with any ideas/experienceed the same issue?

Car is 91 Jspec TT Auto

maybe a bad steering rack, if the shaft wore through the metal ps body there was probably a lot of debris going into the rack.

Thanks for that, it does seem that the rack is the most likely culprit, can a failed pump cause that much damage too it? I have had pumps go on previous cars and never had any other issues, they werent zeds tho! Also, there isnt any sort of special procedures with the changing of the fluid? Just wanna b sure i havent made any sort of school bo
y error and got an airlock somewhere?!

I don't think there's any way to really bleed the PS system. Assuming you have metal/debris in the fluid in the rack like mrmoose said, you could first try draining the fluid out of the rack and reservoir, then refilling with Dexron ATF and see if anything changes, If not, get a new rack

Ye wen the initial pump went it emptied the majority of the fluid for me then its since been refilled and holding its fluid, the fluid i used to refill was the dexron stuff the dealership gave me, and with their help today the boys there all feel its pointing to the rack, the only other thing iv heard about elsewhere was sensors and hard steering failure modes :-S not a clue bout any of tht tho! And being between jobs, this may be open for a while!!!

You could try running the codes at the ecu, but I think it's a mechanical issue (the rack) not an electrical/sensor issue.

Z1 sells them supposedly... I searched "steering" on their site and went to the PS rack. There's an option to select "Right Hand Drive", plus you have to send in your rack as a core.

I had issues with the screen filter causing a false full perception, fish it out, fill, work the wheel back and fourth, rinse lather repeat.
