Well, after searching I noticed there was not very many threads with even "oil cooler" as a topic...SO here I am...

I am purchasing a 300zxtt oil cooler, and would like to install it with my oil relocation kit...Nice and easy...However, I have a couple of questions...

1) Oil pump: Will the stock SR oil pump be able to handle the extra effort?

2) Thermostat: One guy recommended a thermostat...makes sense if you live in cold weather, but I live in Socal, should I be concerned with this?

Anyone, with any experience installing one of these is welcome to put in their .02!

All a thermostate will do is start coolent circulation to the radiator at a lower temp. Only useful if your experiencing overheating at the track.

I havent heard of anyone upgrading the oil pump when putting in a oil cooler. I have an oil filter relocation kit and im pretty sure I havent experience any oil pressure problems.

If this works please let us know, cheap oil cooler solution would rock!

like Jspec said, dont worry about a thermostat unless you are overheating or your car never warms up (ie. worn old thermo thats stuck open) ...

...as for the pump, no need to upgrade pumps when just adding a cooler. pump just provides the flow for the lube system.

The thermostat question was in reference to someone noting that cold oil is bad...So a thermostat controlling access to the oil cooler might be an option...oil thermostat...I wasn't very clear...Sorry...

yep...oil thermostat is a good idea if you want your oil to reach operating temperature fast and not worry about wear damage. I'd guess an extra quart of oil would not hurt either. Of course this extra volume of oil means drop in pressure and yes the need for a more efficient oil pump. Unless the stocker is enought o keep it under fsm specs.

Z32 oil coolers are a great addition to any car that didn't come with one stock since they're affordable and the addition of an oil cooler is always a welcome modification.

If money really isn't a huge issue I recommend the NISMO one though. I upgraded to their unit on my Z32.

Also, I have one sitting around if anybody is really interested in buying a Z32 one. Wasn't planning on selling it, but let me know.

Oil coolers now...man I'm way jealous of Z32s. Anyway, keep us posted how the installation goes. SCC did an oil cooler upgrade on project silvia if you haven't checked it out.

Like others have said, definitely get a thermostat for the oil cooler.

Cold oil is bad, very bad....the problem is that the vast majority of people never let their car warm up sufficiently before putting it under a lot of load/stress...so especially if you don't have an oil temperature gauge, if you install an oil cooler w/o a thermostat and give your car the same time to "warm up" before you start stepping on it as you did w/o the oil cooler, the engine oil obviously won't be as warm because of the oil cooler, especially if it's an efficient one. All the thermostat does is bypass the oil cooler so the engine warms up the same as it used to, and then opens the thermostat when the oil is hot enough, usually around 190-195 deg F. They make a pretty big difference, especially if you're turbocharged. I would never dream of turbocharging w/o adding an oil cooler...after long hot runs, the difference between the inlet and the outlet of the oil cooler is pretty amazing. They're a damn good idea and I don't know why people with even a lot of mods and lots of boost don't have them....

Also, a word to the wise: if you are installing one and are sourcing your own hose, MAKE SURE IT'S HIGH QUALITY, HIGH TEMP, HIGH PRESSURE hose...don't cheap out on the hose. trust me on this, I almost destroyed my engine due to oil starvation by using cheap hose for the oil cooler...even though this hose was rated for higher temps than the oil would ever get and higher pressure than the oil would ever be, they still failed...

Honestly fellas, I have decided against the Z32...There are tons of oil coolers on EBay that are not only new, but come with AN fittings...I would feel much more safe with Aerquip than hose clamps...I think I will go Setrab if I can...

btw...for the money I have yet to see something compete against an fc oil cooler. They come w/an internal thermo. too.
