why do people replace there maf with a z32 maf? is it only when installing a turbo?

Yes it is for turbo applications. MAF's run off a voltage and when the voltage is maxed out at a certain HP, then one must upgrade to a bigger MAF to allow for more air. Turbo cars are all about Air/Fuel ratio.
