Z32 MAF Screen Question

Today I picked up a N62 MAF with the pigtail for about the price you'd pay for just a pigtail on Ebay. My only concern is that the mesh screen is damaged on each side of the MAF. There is a hole, maybe slightly larger than a quarter size, on each screen. Could I safely remove both screens without any adverse effects?
