Hey guys, I am new to this forum, I have been on other car forums were they flame people with n00b questions. I have tried using the search tool, and I didnt get anything.

My question is this, I just bought a 91 sr redtop swapped 240sx, the problem is it seems to idle low (around 500) and when I start it, it will start and then dieif I dont revit. It does thisfor about 3-5min when I start it. The guy says that there is a z32 maf, he also said that the clip for the plug is broken, but it still works, I was wondering. if it is the maf sensor thats messing up, Could I just remove the clipped part that plugs into the maf? If I were to do that, would that let me know if that was the part that was messing up?

Someone told me that If it were the maf that was messing up, remove the clip that plugs into the maf, and the car should idle fine, but make sure to put it back on????? Is that bs?

Thanks-Josh

idle your car with the maf unplugged... if it idles fine unplugged, then I'd say its your mafs/ mafs wiring. What clip are you talking about?

The clip that plugs into the maf. Its the little rectangle clip that plugs into it. I will go and try that and let you know what happens

alright, the plug I am talking about is the one that connects into the maf on the intake. It has a redish color and then its black. I just unplugged it and it did nothing. The car still started and idle surged a bit and then just died. I have a friend that said it could be a faulty ignition module?

Did you drive the car before buying it? Or is this a recent development?

Well I was thinking that is was something as simple as the prior owner installed it but didn't flash the ECU for it. Clearly that isn't the case.

well Actually that could be the case, When you start it on a cold start thats when it does it the worst. If you start it after driving it for a while, it doesnt do it. It just idles low around 500rpm.

No. I highly doubt it would even run without the reflash.

alright, I just talked to the guy that I got the car from, and I asked him if the ecu had been flashed for it, and he said no, that he had tuned something else, I know that the ecu has a chip for something. I asked if the ecu needs to be flashed for it, and he said thats most likely the problem.

Reflashes are not cheap. Check your IACV and the full intake line from turbo to plenum and then get the reflash as a last resort.

Alright, I am kinda dumb. I am new to sr's can you re-explain that? IACV? Plenum? whats the process of that? What do I need to take off? Amy I cleaning anything?

Sorry for the dumb questions, I have only had this car for about 3 days

The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked.

IACV is the Idle Air control valve for the car. It is what manages the air flow into the motor when your foot is off the throttle. This can get gummed up with gunk and cause your car to stall whenever you are off the throttle. Looks like this:

It is located on the intake plenum

You should disassemble everything running from the turbo to the plenum and clean it especially the IACV (use carb cleaner)

Edit: Make sure the mesh net on both sides of the MAF isn't torn or broken as well.
