Hi All,

I never really post on forums much, and usually just read up on the wealth of information by the many contributors to learn. However I tried searching about z32 caliper rebuilds, and while I found some posts none of them really mentioned the part I need help with...

I have a 1993 240SX SE Fastback, and I'm currently in the middle of upgrading my brakes. I'm replacing the stock brakes (stock w/ 5 lug swap kit). I sourced a pair of front and rear z32 calipers and am currently getting them powder coated. I bought a rebuild/seal kit from Courtesy Parts and plan on rebuilding them after I'm done at the powder coating shop. After dismantling the calipers, the rear set has bad o-rings with the front being semi-okay (the o-rings between the caliper housings). Looking at the rebuild kit, it didn't have these o-rings in them. So I went to Nissan to see if there's anything available for that, but according to the service manual it says it's not a servicable part. As a result they don't even have a part number for it.

For those who have had to replace these O-Rings, can I just go out to Orchard Supply or Home Depot and find something simliar to replace these? I'd like to see what others have done in this situation before I reassemble these. I'd hate to have it all setup only to have them leak on me.

Sorry for so much detail, and thanks in advance!

One of my calipers was missing 1 of the 4 bolts that attaches the two pieces of the caliper and when I asked the dealership they told me they can't get these because the calipers are not meant to be taken apart. (It also says in the FSM) In the end i found one on the floor of a junkyard. but I believe the size of the oring is: radious is 1/2 inch, thickness/height is 1/16in hope this helps.

Thanks for the info n2tg86. I noticed that the O-Rings that were there were squared and not round. I'm just hoping that a regular ole O-Ring from Home Depot will work okay.

Sorry... I was referring to the rear calipers of a z32. I'm swapping out the entire stock setup for a complete z32 front and rear. The front calipers seem to be reusable (the O-Ring between the two chambers), but the rears are pretty bad.

Rear:

I unfortunately don't have a picture of the actual o-ring, as the car and parts are at my friend's shop. But you can see where it sits in the picture.

You need to get the proper parts. If you get the wrong o-ring it will swell from the brake fluid and fail. You can get rebuild kits from the dealer or go online for them. They should come with the cross over seal (o-ring between the 2 halves). You must use the correct seals. As far as the bolts go you can get any good grade 10.9 that will do the trick. Make sure its the same length. As far as not being rebuildable that isn't true. We rebuild several hundred sets a year of these. The dealer tells you that because they don't have the service parts.

Hi Terronic17.

That's exactly what I'm scared of.

I actually purchased the rebuild kit from a dealer online (Courtesy Parts) as the local dealers around my area can no longer get the kits for the rear. Yesterday, I checked with a couple of dealers, and they've all shown me the same information on the FSM that it's not serviceable. The OEM 300zx FSM actually says not to dismantle the two halves and that it is not serviceable. Don Nimi from PDM-racing also confirms that the kit does not include these rubber o-rings. I double checked my parts, looking at the kits (both authentic Nissan parts) and they don't have that o-ring included.

You're absolutely right that the right parts should be used. I'm surprised there isn't much information about this important O-Ring (at least that I could find through "search"), especially with everyone powdercoating calipers.

You mentioned that you rebuild these regularly. Is there a source you can refer me to? Or perhaps is this something I can buy from you/your company (assuming that you work at a shop)?

Thanks in advance!

Email me your address and I send you a set. Also make sure when you powder coating not to paint the insides of the 2 halves. We have all the stuff in bulk, so it won't be a problem. I work at a caliper rebuilding company.

Thanks for the complement man, though I kind of wished I waited for a used set of 30mm aluminum calipers... Ah well... No complaints!

Project MU Green should be wycked, and unique!

Bump from the dead,

I am having the same problem sourcing these O-rings, but for the Nissan 350z calipers f/r.

Has anyone else gotten these O-ring crossover seals and does anyone have the proper specs?

Thanks

do the 300zx calipers just bolt on or do you need some sort of spacers?

I was able to find a rebuild kit for the Z32 calipers front and rear that included the seals in between the two halves at http://www.z1motorsports.com. They might have the ones for the 350z too.
