LOL, I know Devin/Z from Japan (the author of that). I gave him my grill and a bunch of other things right before I left Oki! I'd be surprised if he wasn't on NICO also, although I don't think there is a member look up function on the antiquated forum software.

that write up is very good indeed, helped me get started...but take it with a grain of salt as it is intended to be a idiots guide to the ecu but does not cover everything.alot of tuning methodology comes from experience which unfortunately that article cannot impart.

Shoot, if that's an idiots guide, I must be a moron because when I glanced over it, it looked pretty technical to me! Probably one of those things if I actually took the time to read it it wouldn't be so bad.

There are things I miss about japan, but Okinawa was starting to piss me off a bit, so I'm glad to be home. It's not normal japan down there, and there's a lot of US military bulls*** to put up with. They figure since you are overseas, they can make all kinds of new and exciting "rules" for grown a** 27 yr old NCO's and treat them like 12 year olds. To be fair, there are a lot of retards running around there ruining it for everybody else. Lots of drunk marines doing dumb things, and the AF gets it's fair share of retards too.

That's a great guide. Usually that type of info is coveted by the people in the know. Yet not only did he make it available, but he also is trying to make a guide for people who are new to it.

I will say though, to those who are thinking of playing with their own ROMs. Be careful, just as with any tuning device it is very easy to blow something up if you are not really sure of what you are doing. In fact it is even easier to do it with ROM tuning because you have access to so many parameters, and you need to truly understand how they work together and how they are converted from binary to a functional value... whereas with a standalone I simply say "I want 10 degrees at this load/rpm cell" and it works. With Rom tuning you need to make sure everything is scaled correctly, you are converting correctly between Hex/bin/base10 etc.

Very cool though. Thanks again for the link!

Yeah you really do have to know how to convert hex to decimal which isn't easy I'm a first year CS Major and converting hex to dec is still a problem for me haha. It's also pretty expensive to get all the equipment including the ECU that's necessary to rom tune. I read the guide last night, shortly after I ordered a build it your self megasquirt stand alone. It's just easier to work with in and cheaper in my opinion. $250, some elbow grease and time. That's all too build a fully adjustable/tunable ecu compared to the $400+ to burn roms. I think it's a great investment if you own a shop because it's an affordable option for clients if you have the know how.

Yeah it's defintely a very detailed write up but Carl is right even though it is detailed I'm sure there's lots of trial and error. I thought about joining the military as well, but everyone tells me the same thing there's a lot of BS. I guess the upside for you is that you are one of the very few people stateside that got to own a Skyline legitimately ! Is it true skylines are equivalent to our mustangs here, as far as availability and parts ?

MS calc will actually convert between base2, base16, and base10 with the radio button on top (Bin, Hex, Dec). If anyone is looking for a quick way to convert.

FWIW (said it before but I'll say it again), In many respects the STOCK HARDWARE (i.e. burning ROM, using a ROM emulator, or Nistune) is actually a better solution than a standalone. IMO best tuning solution for any street or street/mild race setup. Not until you REALLY need to do something crazy (IMO I am talking different fuel setups, closed loop WOT, lots of different subsystems, 9 second car type stuff) do you really need to move to a standalone. For 95% of the RB owners something based on the stock hardware is the way to go.

WhatsADSM I agree a full standalone is probably over kill. My plan with the megasquirt is to run it just as a fuel controller ( for now). I can use it sort of like, a piggy back.

Do you still have to convert Hex to Dec when using tuning software from Nistune?

Nope the software front end should handle it all for you.

Cool. I think I'm gonna get nistune and a z32 ecu for Christmas then. Lol
