im to buy some z32 front brakes soon. my question is should i have to worry about my abs at all? when doing my suspension again the other day i thought about how there are two brake lines in front. is the lower one for abs? when i buy z32 calipers do i need to buy an abs caliper or is there no difference? seems like napa has great prices or remanufactured calipers at $50 plus a $50 core. how does the core return work? do you have to give them the cores when you pick up the new calipers or bring the cores later? this way i could bring my stock calipers back to them. kinda a$$ i guess but oh well. thanks for your help

The line that runs to the back of the spindle (not the caliper) is the ABS line. I believe it is an electricaly line and not actually a hose.

From what I can tell the calipers are not ABS specific. The ABS reads from the spindle/hub and not from the caliper. I would just get the ones like you said.

The way the core works it if you bring them the old ones at the time of purchase you do not have to pay the core charge. If you are going to try to return your stock calipers instead of matching z32 calipers, you will need to pay for both the new calipers and the core charge at the time of purchase. Then when you bring back the old calipers they will refund the core charge.

VitaminT is 110% in everything he said.

Also, to ease your abs pains, all z32 300zx's had abs. ;)

got another question

if i get the rebuilt ones from napa, they dont come with the pins and clips that they need. is that all i need? looks like the two pins per caliper and one clip, plus sign thing, per caliper. how do those pins stay in without coming out?

They have a paper clip like item that goes through holes on the other end of the pins. Have you found that pins/clips? I need the metal + sign thing for one of my z32 rears. I can't get it at autozone and Nissan will only sell me the "hardware kit" for the rear (pair only) for $40.

Here is a copy and paste on the parts you will need along with part numbers...

You will need the following to do the brake upgrade...
  • 300ZX TT Calipers
  • Brake Harware Kit
  • Spring Return (the + looking thing)
  • Pin
  • Clip
  • Stainless steel braided front brake lines designed for the 240SX -> 300ZX conversion
  • 300ZX Brake Rotors
  • Brake Pads
Below you will find all the part numbers for these items.

NOTE: The part numbers for the parts I used may differ from the ones you will need. Everything is dependant upon the date of manufacture of the Z32 your calipers came from. For this reason, I am listing all the part numbers for every manufacture date for each part.

300ZX TT calipers (41001-40P00 RH Side / 41011-40P00 LH. Side) The above part numbers are the aluminum calipers, NOT the cast iron. Here are all part numbers for all Z32 calipers by manufacture date:

(Numbers listed as RH caliper / LH caliper respectively)

Brake Hardware Kit (41080-40P26) This kit includes the shims and anti-squeal compound needed to do both front calipers. Here are part number listings by manufacture date:

Spring Return (41090-40P02)This is the large metal spring that holds the brake pads in place. You’ll need one of these per side. All part numbers by manufacture date:

Stainless steel braided front brake lines designed for the 240SX -> 300ZX conversionThese can be obtained from a few different places. Here are the ones I know of offhand:

Heavy Throttle / SRSwap.comStranopartsPDM Racing

300ZX Brake RotorsYou have a few different options when it comes to the rotors. You can go with just OEM rotors (which I did, since I found a used set rather cheap), OEM replacements, cross drilled, slotted, both x-drilled AND slotted. It’s all personal preference here. You just have to make sure you get the correct rotor for your caliper though. See below for an explanation of the sizes for the rotors. I would suggest going with either a Brembo OEM replacement, if you are wanting to keep costs down, or Brembo X-drilled/Slotted. You can find Brembo rotors for very good prices at:

Rotor sizing:

The 280mm x 26 mm rotor was ONLY used on the N/A calipers manufactured 2/89 – 7/90The 280mm x 30mm rotor is used on all other applications. Here is a very good resource on caliper and rotor info: Asad’s 300ZX Comparison

Heavy Throttle / SRSwap.com (They carry the cross drilled AND slotted rotors)Stranoparts (Good prices on OEM replacements, but also carry others as well)

Brake PadsThis is really a personal preference. I went with Porterfield R4S pads, and I have no complaints. They are unbelievably better than metal master pads, and are well worth the extra money. Also, choose your pads and rotors according to what you are going to be doing with the car. Don’t get race pads if the car is your everyday driver, and vice versa. I got my Porterfield pads through Stranoparts.

Here is a good link with step by step about how install the pads...
