so, through all of my research i have done trying to find out how to do a z32 brake swap, i found out that nissan switched to a different Brake master cylinder unit in February 1991. i believe that the bore on the 1990 model was bored to 1 1/16th in and the new one is bored to 1in. does anyone know why nissan changed this or why they might? or if anyone know if it would be better for me to get for my z32 upgrade. also since i dont have enough money to the entire upgrade at once, will i be ok if i use the z32 brake master cylinder with my stock s13 brakes?

You're going about it backwards.

Keep your BMC for now and upgrade the calipers / rotors / pads.

I would personally slap on some Q45 fronts and be done with it. They're plenty, especially for a N/A KA car. Along with keeping the oem master cylinder.

Then use either.

I'm using WAY bigger brakes than Z32's and the OEM master cylinder.

How do you know what he's doing with his car? Q45 brakes aren't plenty for every application.

Listen to the Hitman. Brakes then BMC. Or all at once. My 300ZX fronts are getting upgraded to Wilwoods whenever I get a chance to put them on. I still have the stock BMC. Do I want a new one? Sure, but the brakes work fine.

are you doing z32 calipers all around or just the front? if just the front you can use the z31 bmc which is a cheaper option.

My research had always shown the bore difference to be a turbo/non-turbo situation. However, I will say while the system will function with upgraded calipers etc, they are really touchy with a stock s13 bmc. My car used to lock up way too easily before i went to the 1" bmc.

+10000

i kept the factory automatic S13 BMC and i have Z32 front and rear brakes.

btw q45 brakes are better for alot of reasons if you dont care about looks... like wheel fitment, price, hassle, etc
braking power is alot more than stock but a bit less than z32...

but im vain and care lol.

no.

my brakes modulate just fine, i just have to work my foot a lil if im panic stopping which is rare.

my brakes lock front then rear, predicably. Unless im downshifting as well then the rears lock first

Well, Q brakes are a hefty increase over stock. If he's got plans to make big power, it should have been specified in the thread. And usually if you're gonna make that much power, you know you're gonna need bigger brakes than Z32s.

I'd be confident in a 300+ HP car with Q brakes on the front with good pads all around. Anything way above that, and I'd be looking at aftermarket kits.

I have Q45s on my front and a stock BMC, they work great...noticeable improvement over stock, and the pedal isn't mushy
