I'm trying to figure out stuff that's wrong with my bf's 93 Z32. I'm aware they also have the aiv as the s13's do. Would plugging in the intake side/exhaust side help restore his idle? It flucuates a lot, not constantly but it dips low enough to cause concern when at a stoplight. (got to drive his z around while my s13 was out of commission because of a bad rebuilt starter---ah that was fun)

So far, we've cleaned out the tb, and the air filter is clean. I told him he probably should replace his fuel filter/plugs/ and maybe drop some seafoam in the tank for the injectors. BTW his car has 67k. His catalytic converters (who knows which ones) are clogged from the tell-tale egg smell as well. (oh how i loathe to drive behind his car )

another question i have is: when do z32's typically have their timing belts done? i don't think it's been done yet.

Well what do you guys think?

93 has the Aiv's I thought the 92 was the last year for those... Anyway, I remove them and all the hoses etc, you have to have a ECU upgrade for one without them tho. I have those eproms. In addttion many people now have removed and upgraded the EGR and Coolant lines on the Z. Sixty thousand miles 60K is when your supposed to have the timing belt and tensioner, hoses, water pump replaced. There's also a expensive kevlar belt which doesn't streach and last three times longer. I think the complete kit from Courtesy Nissan is around $300. The air regulator is a cause for erratic idle. Trick is to fill tube from balance tube with wd-40 ( eng off) then start and run. If that helps remove it and dis assembly then clean. Is this a TT or NA >?

OOps. Forgot to mention it was an N/A

You need an ECU upgrade for removing the AIV?

I just plugged the aiv from the intake side on my car and it cleared up the issue.

Well, he's pushing 67k or so on the car now, and there's definitely a 'belt' noise when you initially get on the throttle (like during upshifting). I assumed it was drivebelts needing replacement, I don't know if they have been replaced yet (got it from a subaru dealer). Anyhow, you have to replace the water pump at 60k?

On a side note, a friend of mine just two days ago picked up a CLEAN Z31 88' jet black, 82k miles,5spd, 2+2 and he asks me a bunch of questions too about his car. (he's not a nissan guy) and i'm envious as hell. I really wanted a z31 before i picked up the s13.

We all have our hands full now.

90-93 Z has the timing belt, tensioner and water pump done at 60K the 94-96 at 100k .. I may be wrong by one year.. I use the kevlar belt because it last three time longer and doesn't streatch like the OEM one. Labor runs about $300 from guys like me a dealership is double that. When you change the belt it would be a great time to upgrade the bottom radiator hose with the the pipe and upgrade the underdrive pulley with a aluinium one. Good for at least 10 hp..

*gasp* Underdrive pulleys are bad unless they are harmonically balanced (from what i've heard), and those kind of pulleys usually run $500 +.

Well i'll have to relay the message to my bf about the stuff he's supposed to have done by now. He was telling me the same thing about the timing belt being good for 100k but perhaps he read about the wrong year Z32.

Underdrive Pullies on the Z32s are fine... there is talk about the Harmonic balancer issues, but I think it would be more of an issue on an Inline6 rather than V6... I wouldn't fear installing an underdrive pulley. I had one on my TT, and I install them all the time for people.

Timing Belt Maintanence Schedule was changed to 100k miles on the NA only, but it is still a good idea to do the work every 60k miles. The Timing Belt may last that long, but that doesn't mean the other parts included in the 60k/100k mile maintanence will necessarily make it that long. Normally a 60k includes:

Cam Oil SealsWater Pump & GasketThermostatTiming Belt & Tensioner(Idlers at 120k, there are 2)Water Hoses (from the water tubes on the front of the motor to the motor itself).Belts (accessory belts)

A lost of dealerships won't change all of the above parts unless they deem it necessary... which isn't necessarily a good idea for you, but it is for the dealership. That means if something fails in another sub 60k miles, they have to go back in and take it all apart at your expense to replace whatever part has now failed. Its better just to have it all done.

Hopefully you figured things out. But the AIV really shouldn't affect the idle at all... it simply injects air into the exhaust to clean up the exhaust fumes a little so it will pass emissions. It only draws on the engine vacuum slightly. That solenoid is next to the battery on the passenger side of the engine bay, under the cruise control unit.
