I'm positive that this has been posted before, but I'd like to get an answer specific to my problem; here we go:

I bought the car a few days ago(not running) as a project, something to pass the time, but as most things I've become completely obsessed with making this car run. According to the previous owner and mechanic who had been working on it for him, the z, a 1986 300zx automatic non turbo, fired momentarily before dying. Upon hearing this my first thought was to replace the fuel pump, however this was without seeing the car. Brought it home and I've been working on it non stop, here are the facts.

Ecu throws code 11(crank angle sensor)
Replaced old dizzy with a remanufactured one
All spark plugs and wire replaced
Coil wire replaced
New distributor rotor
New battery
Fuel pump OK

When I crank the motor I can hear the car grumble and putter like it wants to start, but I don't believe I'm getting spark and I know these plugs are good. Code is still CAS, even after replacing the entire distributor/rotor. Distributor Cap was cracked minor(not all the way through, and not changing the shape of it) so I thought it would be ok. My next step will be to replace the wiring harness for the dizzy, because it is factory and the last thing it can think of to make this car start.

If it helps you guys at all, the mileage is just under 140k, and far less than my 2004 DD.

If any of you all are in the Kentuckiana area and are familiar with these models, or can help from behind your computer I'd really appreciate it,
Thank you,

T.

I'm in Louisville. Could be a problem with the harness or the ecu. The ignitor is a common issue but shouldn't throw a cas code. have you tested voltage at the distributor? Square wave out?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I haven't checked on that yet, I just picked up a tester last night but then this weather came through so I had to postpone breaking back into it. Currently I'm at work til 5, but afterwards that's the first thing I'm doing. I found this guide yesterday afternoon (http://www.xenonzcar.com/z31/SENSORS/cas.html) but haven't pursued any leads as of right now. If you could, please shoot me a direct message, I'm located in the east end of Louisville and would appreciate having someone nearby that I could contact faster than through a forum for tips.

I'll be sure to post an update after I test the voltage at the harness and ecu, should be around 7pm or so tonight(EST)

i hate to admit this, but i was probably wrong about the CAS codes, considering i wasnt sure how to read the codes until about an hour ago. after properly examining ecu codes, it is showing codes 23 (idle switch) and 31 (load signal). unfortunately im getting mixed responses from various sources regarding code 31. a lot of z forum sites show that it means i need a new ecu and others say it has something to do with the a/c unit? any help is good at this point , espcially if it saves me a couple hundred dollars on a new computer. im getting awfuly irritated at the problems im having trying to make this car run again. i know throwing money into the car until it works isnt the best way to go about fixing the problems, but each repair/replacement ive performed i was absolutely convinced that it would fix the problem , unfortunate ive been wrong each time, though it probably didnt hurt to fix the things i did.
