Hi, about 3 years ago I posted about this dead tach here and pretty much every club I could find. I also went to my local dealership.

I tried tracing back from the cluster, etc. I tried to figure this out on my own since the local dealer didn't seem to want to help. They gave me some cryptic amount to trace down this ghost in my z and then told me my baby wasn't worth the could be hours of diagnostics. They recommended that I buy a new car.

You can imagine how hot I was. I've owned these for the better part of 20 years.

Well, I've lost second gear basically slipping through to third. Trans shop said it was because I lost my tach. Damn. Apparently 1987 was the lucky year and someone posted many months later on my original post the same thing.

I really could use the help to find this box on the pass. Side strut tower.
I did replace the ignition coi which made the needle barelymove on the bottom.

Thanks in advance everyone!!!

Anna

Do you have digital or analog gauges?

Not sure what "box" you are asking about, but the tach simply receives it's signal from the negative coil wire.

Have you tried hooking up an external (independent) tach?

Have you downloaded the FSM?

Have you considered that maybe the tach died and needs to be replaced?

And 99% of transmission shops are crooked. I could see their point (still shady) if it was a manual transmission, because they'd blame you for over-revving the shifts, but it doesn't make sense for an auto.

It makes you wonder why and how some of these people came to work in the automotive fields.

The issue could be in the cluster. Hooking up an aftermarket tach could help chase down the issue. XenonZ31.com I believe has the FSM for DL in addition to lots of other info.

I have the analog cluster. All other gauges work ir try too like the gas gauge. Lol
No I haven't tried hooking up an external tach.

I agree, I've been to 2 transmission shops the first didn't drive Tyger2 out of the parking lot.

Let me find the original post. I do have the fsm, chiltons and Haynes. I understand schematics symbols but when I look at the diagram it doesn't look right in the car. I navigate great with maps but schematics would be more helpful to me if the lines were colored like the wires. Lol.

Let me also say that the tach died right after my battery did. I had been to a few shops wanting to have them check my alternator. My baby gives me signs when he is going to break. He does this thing with his volt gauge where I see it barely spike up and back down again out of the corner of my eye. He won't do it often or regularly but I can always tell and I watch for it. The shop thought I was crazy because he wouldn't do it for them, just mommy. I bought a new battery and alternator and waited.

On the way home in the middle of nowhere (naturally) with no cell signal at dusk, I was sleeping in the passenger seat. My fiancé was driving and woke me up to say my z died and he pulled over. The battery was overcharging and he didn't notice. I cleaned up the area with baking soda and bottled water. Installed a new battery and 'limped' to a place where we could call a rollback. He said there was a bang and the car died. The tach was dead after that.
