Alright folks, so the guy I bought my old supra from has an I believe 86 z31 sitting in his garage--auto, t-top, n/a. He put the battery in backwards and fried something or another, I wish I knew what, but I didn't get a chance to really inspect it.

In any case, he told me he wanted roughly $400 to get it out of his garage. There's a local guy who has a vg30et and 5-spd transmission with all the parts to do a swap for $1000, along with a set of Tokico blue's.

I figure tax return time is coming up, and I'll have roughly $2500 to spend. $1400 for the car, motor, and transmission; $3-400 for a new clutch; $200 for springs to match up with the blue's; some minor body work and a new paint job $free (3rd cousin does custom paint/body)...

I'm thinking it would make a pretty bad-*** weekend racer/drifter! What do you all think?

The 86 is my favorite year. I kind of wish I never got rid of mine, but rough times happen.

be sure taht swap includes the front crossmember, and pedals, but I'd wager the only problems with the car is fusible links and fuses

I got my 83 because the previous owner put a charger on backwards and fried the ECU. I went to autozone ordered a new one pluged it in and it fired right up. i bet that's all that's wrong with the z31.

I'm still not too sure about the car. The guy knows NOTHING about cars.

He blew up my old supra because he though the oil pressure gauge was an oil level gauge--he'd "add oil when it got to 0"...guess what? It seized up HARD.

I'm looking at a 96 240sx as well. $1000, blown motor, only 10 miles away from me. I'm thinking SR20 swap >=)

Oh, how original.

Anyway... As has been pointed out. The problem is likely the ECU. Or, you could get really lucky and have it only be a fusible link, fuse, or relay.

You say you'll try to be nicer if I try to be smarter? Could you point out where I should "try to be smarter?"

Sheesh ba-humbug to you too. I know it isn't original, why do you think it's been done so much?--because it's a tried and true PROVEN good swap. Don't get me wrong, so is the RB series and the CA series, but when you've got an SR20 readily available...why not?

To be honest, I'm looking for nothing more than a weekend drift/street toy. I think the S14 will fulfill the need better, but I dunno cuz I've never driven a Z31 before. All I keep hearing about is how heavy they are...

It's called a signature. Or did you forget that you can do that?

If you're looking for a weekend drift toy, go with the S13. The aftermarket availability of the Z31 isn't anywhere near the level of the S13. If you were planning on drifting it, you'll be doing a lot of custom work (or having it done).

I gotta say i think the sr is very over rated, in general I'm not a big fan of loosing displacement, I'd sooner turbo the ka than swap in sr, once you have enough knowledge to make power without a "kit" you see things a bit differently

back on track, if all he did was add too much oil, draining the oil and pulling the plugs and cranking the engine should displace all the excess fluids, if with an empty oil pan and no plugs it still won't turn then there is a larger issue

and yes formt he sounds of things the s13 would be a better choice for you

lol I wish that's all he'd done was add too much oil...when I drained the pan there was only MAYBE 1/2 qt of oil in the pan. Motor was locked SOLID with the plugs out.

Back on track--I like the styling of the S14 better, any reason you're saying to go with an s13 instead? Other than the common-ness?

Oh, btw, I wasn't asking where you said that; you weren't being "nicer" so I asked if maybe I said something that wasn't "smarter"...

It's just a part of my signature. It's been there for a long time now. Not planning on changing it any time soon. It doesn't apply to everyone.

As far as the S13 vs S14 argument.... The S13 is over 100 lbs lighter and can accommodate any of the same mods an S14 can. They're virtually identical suspension wise.

lighter=faster, and cheaper to boot, but wither way s13 s14 sould more up your alley than Z31

that being said a replacement vg30e shouldn't be hard to ome by
