I came across this statement and wanted to see if you guys could help me confirm or debunk it, basically is it true or not?
a "late 87" model, which means it has the rare LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL not found on earlier models, but still has the LARGER T3 TURBO that was replaced by a smaller unit on '88-'89 models. It also has the stronger Nissan-built transmission (earlier cars had a Borg Warner unit that wasn't very reliable). Performance wise, a "late 87" is as good as a Z31 gets!
I'm hoping someone can speak to this .

All the facts are true, although I wouldn't exactly call an LSD rare.

By "late 87", it means 87 models produced after April 1987.

The last statement is a matter of opinion.

I think his point was the "late 87" was the only one to have the LSD, the larger T3 turbo and the stronger Nissan-built transmission from the factory.

Glad to know he was correct.

I found where you got that from. That car was manufactured 01/87. It did not come from the factory with an LSD. He may have installed it. I would ask him to take a picture of the diff. A finned cover usually signifies an LSD, but covers are simple to swap. Ask when he put the LSD into it.

Yea, I've been reading alot of listings and ads, just trying to do my research. If I buy a Z31, I want both a turbo and a back seat (there's a difference between the kids not fitting in the back seat, and there not being a back seat), but come mid-June I may have changed my mind. I just want to have all my research done in advance and understand the market and the BS.

Thanks for your help.

This guy (different one) even seems to be referencing your site, LOLhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1

Then you are aware that no Z31 or Z32 in the US came with both a turbo and back seats, right? Only in Canada were they available that way. And almost all of them were automatics.

Now, a turbo swap into a Z31 is not a difficult or expensive task.

LOL, I forgot to type "but they never made one of those" .

Actually, I've found a few 5 spd Z31 2+2's with a back seat, but don't care for the body lines/how the roof is extended . I think the Z32 does a better job of hiding the fact that it has a back seat in the roof line, but should be identifiable by the placement of the gas filler door. And I won't be able to touch a "decent" Z32 and stay within my budget .

Thanks for all your help.

I completely agree. Something about the t-tops breaks up the lines (IMO). But the slicktops (though rare) aren't as hard on the eyes. Plus, you won't have problems with leaks that way.
