Which is the better way to go?

I'm having some engine problems that I'm working on determining the cause of (see other thread) and if it turns out to be the AFM, I'll be wanting to change to a MAF system.

Also, note I have a 1981 280zxt, so I have the external crank angle sensor. I'm not sure if the Z31 swap works with the external CAS.

The megasquirt looks like everything I'd need, but I'm concerned about how long it would take me to get a driveable tune.

Right now the car is my daily driver but it's not especially driveable. I may have to get a daily beater or a bike if I can't get it running right this week.

I have not personally done the Z31 swap but you'll need the 82-83 280 zx turbo distributor and a Z31 shutter wheel as well as the injecotrs, harness, ecu, tps, chts and MAS, so yes it's an invlved process but you end up with a very drivable dependable system

megasquirt I have plenty of first hand experience, it'll work with all your stock bits but you'll have to add an air temp sensor and a potentiometer type tps, the plus side you get lots fo flexibility, it comes at the cost of lots of work to setup install and wire up, I highly recomend switching to O-ring injectors and pallnet fuel rail while you're in there, there are plenty of great base maps available for the L28et but if you spring for the wideband tuning is a snap, no need for a dyno, just some seat time datalogging, the problem with the megasquirt is that it's a large project, with a large learing curve, and while it is a very inexpensive stand alone, adding the wideband etc can drive up the cost in a hurry, on the upside, the potential is limitless

I thought the S130s used a MAF type system as well. No?

AFM = air flow meterMAF = mass air flow

A MAF is a type of AFM.

When asking about the AFM on the Z31, the terms AFM, MAS, and MAF are used interchangably.

The AFM in the Z31 is a wire type. What kind is the S130?

I'm actually leaning towards turning the car into a project car at this point; which would push me towards the Megasquirt option. I was able to get the car running a little better by replacing the oxygen sensor, but I'm pretty sure the CAS is bad; so it seems to make more sense to switch to the distributor CAS instead of the external.

Sounds like the megasquirt would work with either CAS while the Z31 ECU only works with the distributor enclosed CAS.
