I'm looking to upgrade my wheels/tires/brakes/suspension on my 1986 Z31. I'd love to be able to use a modified version of the original 1986 NA wheel design while also allowing for bigger brakes.

I've made some mockups using MS Paint and was wondering which ones, if any, looked decent.

The first picture is the original wheel (not from my personal car, but one I found online). The second picture is the same wheel but enlarged to a 17 inch size. The cutout for the air cap has been removed and the slits are slightly longer, but the center cap size remains constant. The third is the same as the second, but with much longer slits. I think they're too long, to be honest. The next two are also 17 inch wheels but instead of having 12 spokes, they have 10 (for better symmetry with the center cap).

One thing I wasn't able to do with my complete lack of editing skills was impart depth into the designs. I think having the spokes and cap recessed a bit would look good.

Eventually, I'd like to add a front lip kit and do an 84 AE paint scheme along the lines of this:

Getting a set of new non-used Rims would be a better bet, since you have a large selection of potential fits with the 5 lug (I have the stupid 4 lug that limits selection). I would go on the Tirerack site and check out some quality rims like Enkei

Yeah, that's what I'll probably end up doing. It'd be nice to have a custom-made set of forged aluminium wheels that look close enough to stock, but the cost is just too much when I could get a good set of aftermarket wheels instead for 1/4th the price. I was still mulling it over while I had nothing to do so I made a 3D model of the wheels and pasted them on top of a picture of a Z31:

But in the end I'll probably go with something like this:

Thanks for the suggestions.

I like that nice design, I did Enkei in 16" with only the 4 lug there were few choices so these worked out well and fit without any spacers/adjustment/rubbing. Play with the Tirerack tools they will show you what fits off the shelf and call them the sales guys really know their s***.
