Hey, I was wondering what would be needed to install the clutch differential off a Z31 into the rear end of an S13. Thanks.

the z31 rear end is the one that nismo usa sells us and tells us is a performance clutch type 2 way, way better than a vlsd out of a z32. The only person I know who runs that rear end regularly and knows how to work with them on s13s is a guy named matt back, not sure if hes on these forums anymore.

I have a very hard time believing that the nismo 2-way is a stock Z31 diff, I know the nismo unit are really mild, I own one, but they still do a good amount of clunking and tire chirping, you wouldnt find that on a stock car. Maybe its similiar to the nismo 1.5 way or 1 way. Do you know if its an R180 or R200 pumpkin?

i guess, maybe it is a 1.5 or something, but dont listen to me, im just repeating what i read somewhere, someone found out the same part number was used for the z31 diff and the s13 nismo USA diff, thats the speculation anyways. Maybe i dreamed it up and im totally lying about everything.

I do know that matt back has posted that he uses the z31 diff in the s13 and stuffs it full of extra clutches to make it super hard core. But its only the z31 diff itself that fits into the s13 pumpkin, not the z31 pumpkin fitting into the s13 subframe.

This IS a r200 differential, and IS a clutch type... WAY better than viscous... ive looked into this too, but it doesnt seem too common...

a the dreaded clsd...

It's pretty much a rumor as far as I know.

It all started here in FAhttp://forums.freshalloy.com/u...39482

but matt back never got it to work, or never let anyone know that he did.

I did some research on the side, and yes it's the same as the low end nismo unit according to z31 guys, however, there's an extra set of pressure plates in the nismo unit. I forgot the number, something like 2 or so.

Anyway, it's from 87 and up turbo models non-ss, produced post 4/87.

Stock ratio is 3.7

Only the innards is supposedly transplantable.

Breakway torque is very low, but take into consideration this is at the wheel. Apparently manufacturers rate these at the spline. I'd love to be the guinea pig. I've got a stock carrier in my backyard, and i can probably get this kinda easy, but I don't have the money...

Any tips on the install and what to look out for? I might actually do this if I can source a turbo kouki Z31 in the yard.

I just found an Z31 clutch LSD diff in my local junkyard for a very fair price. Is there any way to use the clutch LSD internals in my S13 diff? If so what flanges would I need to use to make this work? Thanks!

According to info I've found online, the Z31 LSD unit drops right in to the S13 pumpkin, and can even be used with the stock non-LSD S13 output stubs, can anybody confirm/refute this?

yeah, no special stubs needed for the Z31 CLSD. you can rebuild it and add plates for higher breakaway.

only available in 87-89 TURBO Z31, except the white SS. if you find one, they go on ebay regularly for $600+

you can't just swap the whole diff in, it's a longnose R200. i have one here, but it's going in my 76 280zt. i did sell the rear cover though, they sell pretty well too.

damn!...

i saw one the other day, but i didnt have all this info i was at the junkyard checking for lsds on z cars, to see if i could use it on my 510.

so it is actually an R200 diff longnose right?, i can definitely drop it in the dime, is going to be sick!!!

am i missing something?, i dont think i need different axles

didn't the 510 come with an R180?

if so you'll need the moustache bar for R200, front mount, and axles. the Z31 CLSD axles had a 4-bolt round outer flange but you can use regular open stubs in it,,,,zcarcreations sells wheel stub flanges to use the z31 CV's with your stock outer stubs. assuming yours are the same as the s30.

the front lower differential mount.

i believe they are different, although i don't have a 510, my knowledge is based on S30's,,,but there's lots of info about swapping R180 -> R200 in the z's. the R160 isn't much different than the R180.

some subarus came with clutch LSD R160's,,,have you looked into using one of those? you could sell that Z31 LSD for a nice price on ebay, and get a cheaper R160 LSD.
