Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about auto transmissions. I have never owned one, therefore there was no need to know. My fiancee has a '89 300zx na auto. It won't shift into 2nd gear. It'll eventually go to 3rd and then the torque converter lockup seems to work too. I took it to Cottman and they said that the second gear bands were shot/broken and that the trans would have to be rebuilt to the tune of $2000 to $2500. My fiancee loves this car, she has owned it since new. I can't convince her that the car isn't worth putting this much money into. So, I was wondering if there are other alternatives that we might persue. Used, rebuilt, or whatever. Thanks

My father was a Nissan mechanic back in the 1980's, and he mentioned 300ZXs were known for transmission failures. Your best bet is to remove the transmission yourself, have it rebuilt, and put it back in yourself. A used transmission will most likely fail soon after installation.

Teach her to drive a stick and do a 5-spd swap.

You can find a good used one I installed a used one no problem 35000 miles later. Most salvage will give you a 30 day warrenty. Danny
