I decided to bring my question to this forum in hopes that it might get a response. I have an 84 720 with the z24 engine I got it for free with 78,000 orginal miles on it from the orginal owner. Only a tiny bit of rust on the bed seem on both sides, both about 3 inches long. I was looking to convert it to the TBI from the z24i engine that came out starting in 85. I know a lot of people have done the opposite conversion from TBI to carb. This is my daily driver and around here a TBI will get better gas mileage then a carb. I know I need the distributor with the crank sensor, the TBI, and maybe a new fuel pump since the z24i had like 22 psi and the z24 fuel pump had around 2-3 psi. I wanted to know if anyone has done this and if there are any problems that I might have if I do it.

Probably your biggest headache will be to find an 86.5 to 1988 truck with the TBI intact without having to buy the whole truck.

But you are correct in the parts from it that you will need. You will need to get the whole wiring harness from the ECU to the engine/dash.

You can get a replacement fuel pump to fit the 720 at AutoZone. Have them search a 1986 Nissan 720 truck fuel pump and go from there. It's an AirTex pump that puts out up to 90psi, which is plenty for what you'll need. It mounts in the 720 stock location (external pump), and costs about a buck twenty. It's what I used when I put the FI KA24E in my 85 720 4x4.

You might consider using MegaSquirt for the ECM/ECU rather than the stock Nissan computer. You can tune it to your hearts content, and likely get better mileage than the stocker, plus the added advantage of actually knowing what's going on with your engine. Plus, the wiring will be A LOT easier.

I might be able to get you incontact with someone with a full MPFI setup for the z24. He tried to sell it to me but I bought a weber instead.

"if it's a MPFI z20e or z22e setup, that would be better than the z24i's, but these are kind of rare.

I'm not sure if the TBI's ECU can be tuned." - SeanG

^Pretty sure its this.

I vote no on the TBI conversion.

I mean that literally, not rhetorically. I'm think that if a person is bent on tuning the TBI ECU, it could probably be done one way or another. I think they would be bending the wrong way, though.

ya, if you just want it to run, the stock ECU will be ok

if you want to be able to tune it, a standalone is the only way to do it.
