Good Evening,

I am hopefully going to get a chance to replace the timing set on my '89 D21 this summer. I have the fsm and have reviewed an excellent online tutorial and I think I'm good to go but do have one question. The fsm (page EM-69), in regard to the slack side chain guide, states "When installing chain guide, move chain guide in direction that gives strain to chain.". If someone could give me an idea of just how tightly the guide should be pressed against the chain as the bolts are torqued down I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise!

I cannot tell you I know what I am talking about, but I pushed the chain guide over fairly snug against the chain. I had originally left it a bit slack and it wailed like a banshee. The tensioner is what should tighten the chain.

Be sure and remove or loosen all the bolts in the water pump!!

Also be sure you have the distributor (technically called something else) and oil pump clocked correctly when you put is all back together.
