- Z22 - Years - 1981 - 1983 Horsepower - 98 @ 4800 RPM Lb/ft Torque - 117 @ 1800 RPMIt's a great motor....for a tractor or a forklift. The Z20 had a bit less displacement so it probably had a different cam that would let it rev a little bit higher and make about the same power with a little less torque. The cool thing about the Z series is that I bet you never thought they had that little HP huh? They can surprise you since they have torque just about anywhere in the rev band. A Z22 might only have 98 hp but it has 98hp....at 1000rpm, at 2000rpm, etc...they are engines that act like electric motors. I towed a 68 buick lesabre with a Z24 powered 720. It didn't even complain....it was just dog slow, but it still didn't even strain. Great motor for your workhorse vehicle...unburstable with stock cam (you simply will not get it to rev over 5500 under load, no matter what)

thanks...so your saying that if i want some good hp i should go with a differnt engine? so what would be a good engine that i can pick up kinda cheap and not have to modify the car????

It can make decent pwr with a modified Lseries head. It sounds like you already have an L-series head, so just go from there, put it together and throw it in, you can always upgrade the motor later.(any engine is better than none, right?)

The Z series will drop right into a 510, so if you want to build the ultimate Z-series motor, get a Z24 block (from a 720 pickup) and put an L-series head on it. You will have to modify the Z24 timing cover slightly, but it bolts on. The how-to is probably in this forum somewhere. The KA is nice but you do have to modify the car slightly....I think I've also read somewhere about people adapting KA24DE heads to the Z24 block....this makes for a bolt-in KA24. Search for it, I've heard of it being done.

You can get 510 suspension from Nissan Motorsports, or you can try Classic Datsun Motorsports. Its possible to build a monster L series engine, I have heard of long rod L20B making stupid amounts of hp (like well over 200 hp)
