Does the ECU for the Z engine control fuel only? If so, would it need attention if I grind the cam to 264 duration. What new model air flow meter is compatible with this engine - SR, RB, QG etc? Its fitted in a 85 720 with a dogleg manual transmission from an A10 cifero (not 100 percent sure though).

It's fuel and spark, unless the distributor has the vacuum advance can on it.
And yea, you would need to do a lot of work to the fuel to run that big of a cam.

Most of the older turbo engines had a hotwire MAF instead of a flap type meter, but no one has ever mapped out the ROM on those ECUs, so I really doubt you would ever be able to use a larger mass flow meter on it.

Your best bet would be to go to a standalone system, like MegaSquirt.

The stock management on those engines just isn't very tunable, though you could very well use a stock system off another engine, like a KA or SR. It would take some work, but it is doable.

#1 is a thermal valve, probably for EGR or AIV, so it's most likely a direct plenum source.
