Just found out that the U-TEC is actually a programmable piggy back ECU mapping system. With a switch, you can go back and forth between the OEM ECU settings and the programmed performanced ECU setting stored in it by the tuning shop. The way it works is that when you buy it, the tuning shop tunes the program to your cars specifications and installed modifications, and so you can go back and forth with a switch between programmed setting and OEM ECU settings regardless of the modifications you have on your car. This is not a plug and play system as it must be programmed specifically for your car. This means your car has to be tuned, and i think the G-35 as part of its maintenance schedule has to be re-tuned after so many miles of service. The cost of the equipment and tuning may run around $1,300 for adding about another 20 - 30 ponies.
With CobbTuning, unlike U-Tec system, it is plug and play and so you don't need any tuning of your car, so long as the car stays stock. With other modifications to your car, you run the risk of leaning out or over enriching the car. It has no car specific tuning parameters just a general set of parameters that should work for any stock G--thats one reason why it is cheaper than the U-Tec system. The risk, I think, for problems, if one ignores the safety warnings of cobb tuning manufacturers is very great. The cost of this plug and play system is about $595 - $650. No tuning is needed.
