Since you're in the tech forum, why not take a minute and describe the starting issue you're having? Does the car turn over? Or does it just click? What work was recently done that could cause this issue? When did the starting issue start?

Help us, help you

Well to start off I have the car back now and its running fine but this could easily happen again.

I went to turn on the car and it cranked but would not turn. Took it to teh mechanic and he told me he found a bunch of wires that were rotten and weren't running electricity so he repaired them and cleaned the spark plugs.. He cleaned all the connectors as well.

i went to get the car and when i went to leave it happened again! i left it another day and he was able to turn it on but really wasnt able eto figure out why it happened again. he looked at all teh wiring again and all the connectors and everything was now clean.

i'm afraid this will happen again and i'll be stranded. I'm thinking i should start preparing to buy anew harness???

Hard to diagnose electrical over the internet. Try this, when the car is running. Wiggle around random wires and see the the idle changes. Also clean your PTU connections!

First off, I don't know WTF your mechanic did, but from the sounds of it, I don't like it.

How does your yellow temp sensor connector look? If it's cracked or missing the clip, I suspect that. I've circled it with the aqua color in the picture below:

If it happens again (not being able to start), try starting it with someone pushing down on that connector.

If that circuit is open, the engine won't start, because the ECU isn't getting a temperature reading. Happened to me many times before with a broken connector. Luckily it's an easy fix. Just cut off the old connector and crimp or solder the new one on, only two wires.

If that connector is not broken, missing clip, then you need to look elsewhere.

Good idea. Especially the PTU, if there is corrosion present that will definitely produce starting and running issues. Also a corroded CAS connection can prevent starting and cause missing. When I first bought my NA in April of 06, every connection was corroded and brittle. The car would not run right, no matter what I did. Could never thoroughly clean everything, due to the fact that the corrosion travels up through the harness wires. I ended up replacing the EFI harness myself, when I pulled the plenum for my injector replacement.

From my experience, you will probably need a new EFI harness, along with some new vacuum hoses. Hopefully your injectors are in spec as well.

i was thinking the same- i might need a new harness. 20 yrs is 20 years and this is like f***ing cancer so it might be easier to just replace it. it running now though.

it feels so good to drive my Z again...

Replacing the harness is really the long-term answer. At a minimum you need to have the plenum off to do so, but it's really much easier with the engine out.

Help me, help you

Step one, open hoodStep two, inspect connector I circledStep three, post result

If that connector wiggles loose, the car won't start. But it is odd that it started without any other changes.

Sounds like you need to bring your car to someone who can diagnose it. Could be PRVR issue.

yes, the one circled in blue. It should not wiggle, and you definitely shouldn't be able to pull it off without removing the retaining clip first. If it's cracked, and/or the retaining clip is missing, that's a problem.

It should look like this:

If you want me to take a look at it I'm located near trenton...i work with jessie a lot hes a good friend of mine it could be a number of things wiring on the z is a big mess my friend had a similar issue it took a solid day to correct. The left one is the critical one if you have some electric contact cleaner pull the plug off CAREFULLY and clean it really good.Cameron O'[email protected]
