ok so heres the deal, while driving back from ISU, i got off 55 onto queenwood and pushed the clutch in to stop. well the Z died there and wouldnt start back up. i tried jumpstarting it twice and it did nothing but tick. so i rolled on down the hill and tried to pop the clutch, still nothing. so i had the car towed to a shop here in town, knieps, and are having them check it out. all the interior/exterior lights and stereo and stuff work so im guessing its not the battery. when you turn the key, it just ticks and doesnt turn all the way over. im having a pretty good feeling this is a bad fuel pump problem. have any of you Z owners, or anybody for that matter, problem? if this is indeed a fuel pump problem, i would like to buy a fuel pump for cheap. if i end up having the shop do it, it will take 2 weeks and cost me like $600 and i dont want to do that (again).

IF ITS JUST CLICKING ITS THE STARTER SOLENOID OR THE STARTER ENGAGMENT IS LOCKED UP, BUT THAT WOULDN'T CAUSE IT TO DIE.... IS COMPUTER TURNING ON?

broken timing belt. the shop where its at says they wont even touch it, but they want me to pay towing costs to wherever i want it taken. im having it taken to my house and a freind of mine and i are going to (hopefully) do it. im praying that the belt is all that is broken.

Hopefully you didn't bend a valve! It is an interference engine as far as I know, but you might have gotten lucky. I did the timing belt on my buddy's '95. I found a link to a great step-by-step tutorial. Lemme know if you need it and I'll try to find it.

the timing belt breaking is one of the worst things than can happen to the vg. not to get your hopes down or anything, but if your timing belt broke, then most likely something happened internally (i.e. bent valves). good luck.

well the Z is torn apart right now, we currently have pulled out the radiator, rad. shroud, cam gear covers, throttle cable cover, radiator hoses, thermostat something or other, intake pipes, and about a million different size bolts. all thats left to take off now is all the serpentine belts and then the gears for them. the timing belt in fact is not broken at all, but is missing a bunch of teeth on it. i dunno what this means, but hopefully is didnt break anything else. im praying my engine is ok.

i hope this engine is not toast for a bunch of reasons, one being that there is so much done to this engine that i would hate to have to get rid of it. be that as it may, if im going to get a new engine, you can bet its gonna be a vg30dett. ive found them complete w/ harness and everything for $1500. granted this is my LAST RESORT, i dont want to have to pull the motor out.

the car was towed to my house today sometime while i was at work. but the idiots who towed it locked the keys in the car, and only the dealer can cut a new key off the original "Z" keys so i dont have a backup yet (yes im an idiot). plus they charged me for towing twice because i already paid for the first time. PLEASE, FOR ANYBODY"S SAKE, NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO KNEIPS IN MORTON EVER, THEY ARE MORONS.

tomorrow the new belt should be here and we will hopefully have it on by the end of the day. so thats where we stand now.

well we got everything off today, took a lil while to get the crank gear off, but we got it. cleaned up everything, there were bits and pieces of belt teeth all over the place mixed with grease and dirt and whatever else was there. so we cleaned it all up. the timing was really screwed up, like right side was like +3 and the left was like -3 or somthing like that. so we set the timing back, everything turned perfectly w/ no problem and made no "wierd" noises, so so far so good. the belt we got was too small to go on, so we had to take it back and i ordered on from another store that is the same kind as we took off. it wont be here till wednesday, so now all i can do is wait and look at my poor car up on jacks in the garage.

my cats think its a pretty good place to sleep though.

I personally use the Kevlar timing belt for the Z cost a bunch more, You mentioned everything is OK.. Have you run a compression test on it.. If you have bent valves that would be one way of catching it before trying to start it again...AMZperformance.com has the belt.. I've been running the Kevlar on several of the Z's now and wouldn't use anything else just because it last three times longer and doesn't streach...Takes away the 60K mile worry

I'd only use an OEM nissan timing belt for the car. Also, while you are in there, I would also replace the water pump, timing belt tensioner, and both of the timing belt idler pulleys. Make sure too that you are properly adjusting the timing belt tensioner. There is a very good step by step writeup on twinturbo.net in the Tech section, with lots of pictures, etc. If you need a good vendor to buy parts from, Concept Z Performance has about the best prices, and hands down the best customer service of all the vendors I have purchased parts from. Their website is http://www.czp.us .

Power Interprize makes the Kevlar belt ,, last 3 times longer than stock and doesn't strech. The Nissan guys recommed it on Z cars with over 400 hp.. ..Z from Japan for instance. BTY he has a 800 hp car last time I heard from him...

I'd rather get the OEM belt since I am going to be changing mine at the regular service interval along with the tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and tensioner pulleys, since none of those items is rated at 180k miles (and I sure wouldn't want to take the risk of trying to come anywhere close to letting a timing belt go that long). I am pushing way over 400WHP on my Z and I still stand by my recommendation.

well: got everything back together, timing set, intake pipes and crank pully back on, everything back on so that it would run. clutch in, key turn, car loaded up, shot fireballs out the exhaust, ran like sh*t for about 20 seconds, then died an agonizing death. after that, i tried one last time, and you could hear pieces of stuff inside. so....

i am in need of a nice running vg30dett. i see no point in rebuilding this motor because of all the pieces (oversized valves, pistons, etc) that i cannot afford w/ the labor and all that. so a new engine is needed, if anybody has one or knows of any hookups, please let me know. thanks a lot guys, any help is really appreciated.

check with midwest engines, they are very reasonable on their shipping charges, and if only the motor is bad then that's all you need, and have you considdered rebuilding the one that's in the car, unless the block and heads are totally thrashed it's prolly be cheaper than a replacment, and you get to overbore it for a touch more displacement
