Someone correct if i wrong but wouldn't a car not run at all if pump is bad not run for a while and then die. I would start by checking all your connections, check your ECU for any codes. Check your PTU. When the PTU is going bad the Z will run properly when the PTU is cold but once it gets hot(to the touch) the car will stall. Remember the first time i checked it the car would stall after a short time of being on , use multimeter to check it. Although when i knew little about the Z to check it i actually put it in the fridge to cool PTU down and then reinstalled it to see if the car would run once again until the PTU heated up again.

There is also a product called "circuit freeze" and comes in an spray can. We used to use it to test chips that were failing without pulling the circuit board. It can be ordered online.

I had this exact same problem where my PTU would get rediculously hot, amazing solution.. Check the ground wires..surprisingly if it has a bad ground...that mother will get really hot and affect the motor. There are about 3-4 ground wires if you follow the harness from the front of the motor to the back. Check for loose grounds and then let it run and see if the PTU still gets hot, mine was an instant fix.

I had this problem when my MAF (MASS AIR FUEL SENSOR) started going bad.

WHen you turn the key to the ON position, if you hear a buzz, typically its your fuel pump kicking on.

Heres what I learned from people here on Nico, and several other forums.

Before doing anything, check the ECU for codes.

Heres what I did when I got the code for my MAF.

Turned out my MAF was going bad, and I needed a replacement one. I have a hook for MAF's for 60 bucks, brand new. I also cleaned the grounds around the motor, and it helped with smoothing out the idle and alot of other problems I was experiencing, bogging, etc.

If you can, get Nissan to replace the PTU. its free because its still under recall.
