Haven't seen a discussion with what I've been thinking of recently, so here it goes. Note, This probably wont be until about 10 years from now. At the very least, once Tesla's Gigafactory has had time to set in. A big issue I see is battery placement and the amount of KwH that can be fit on the car or any car conversion at that. Tesla has the patents for anybody to use and encourage it. So I'm thinking, what if one was to make a flat battery pack just like in the Model S? I think room could be made under the Z to do as such and adjust. I was thinking about contacting Tesla for some prints and try working something out on Auto CAD. Any thoughts? I'd like to just keep this thread on battery placement for the time being.

My guy Doug at Fairlady is Whole Hog into electric vehicles, and I have decided that if life allows with Doug's help the NA will become an electric Z. I like that it would be in my 2/89 built '90, kind of like a repeat of the technology leap the Z32 was.
Doug said start looking for a wrecked Tesla, saying as mentioned that was where to start as he had the rest all figured out.
If I get a chance to pick his brain more on that subject I'll post any new info I can get...just right now the TT repairs are top of my list.

Yeah, I remember seeing that a LONG time ago on here, and thought it was dumb, but that was before I knew what EV's could actually accomplish. It's a way sick build.

I was impressed with what Doug was doing and that bike I pictured, and have definitely noticed that the electric car field has picked up some momentum.
I'm interested to see if this guy has anything to add, and am also interested that the subject (electric Z32) has come up twice in two weeks now...

Yeah I've seen that one a few times. Its the right track for an ev conversion in general. My plan is for something a whole lot cleaner. Just like those darn sexy Tesla's. Unless in the future Nissan comes out with a fresher 300zx and all electric with dual motors. Only in my dreams would they come out with a fresher 300zx period :lolling:

No kidding, all of the manufacturers are caught up in mangled metal and bizarro shapes that don't flow together- stealth fighter looking crap.
I applaud your choice of platform and hope you are successful, that would bode well for the future without gasoline.

Before I bought my Z, I told a buddy of mine that was a dream/plan to do an electric 300zx. Regarding batteries, the Leaf offers a battery pack that can be disassembled. Each cell us shared like a giant deck of cards so they may be able to lay end on end and double stacked to complete the "bed" you referred to in your post. Obviously, the gas tank area will offer tremendous space for cells.
The lithium ions cost much more but take up less space and keep the weight down.
They say a good complete conversion runs about 12k, but that might include labor.
