I got my Versa last week, I'm thinking about rust proofing in the spring. I live in a colder climate that uses a lot of salt on the roads during the winter. I bought my car, so I will have it at least five years. Should I spend the money on rust proofing? Have you? And not the dealership's rust proofing, I mean real rust proofing.

After seeing the underside of my father in laws cars, I would think that it would be a god idea. Even if you don't need it, it wouldn't hurt to be safe.

A lot of people will tell you it's a rip-off. However, while cars are made a lot better than they used to be I figure it's cheap insurance to add protection. Especially for those of us who drive over tons of salt.

Just remember, rustproofing is a service, not a product. The quality of the work is the most important.

Legacy40k, if you're near the west end of the GTA, I can give you a recommendation.

Waste of money unless you tend to drive cars for more than 10 years. I had a 1991 Toyota Tercel that survived 12 Michigan winters without significant rust except where paint was chipped off. Even then it was only surface rust and didn't start blistering.

Keep in mind however, that car was built in Japan. They might have better paint quality control.

I read somewhere that the worst corrosion on a vehicle happens (suprise) in the summer months. It has little to do with roadsalt unless it's exposed accident damage metal. During the warmer, more humid weather you get cooling at night and condensation occurs within the cars panels. This apparently causes the worst rusting.

In the extreme cold of winter there is little moisture in the air to interact with roadsalt and cause corrosion, even if your cars' plastered with salt

I've also heard that since the 90's cars are stamped in a steel with a lower carbon content which helps slow corrosion.

Anyway I've never bothered with rustproofing.
