Ha! The final tally of the poll was very close and the kicker is that I never did vote in the poll. Hmmm.... which way would Vimy have voted? :D I did save Palerwmd's epic and revealing post to my own files. Talk about expert opinion!

To the Canadians: please go easy on your American cousins. It is difficult to see the forest for the trees down here in the lower 48. The US is facing war and, like proud citizens of any country, they will rally around their flag and their leaders. There is much more good in the US than bad.

To US citizens: Please go easy on your Canadian cousins. Their media has traditionally had a larger world view because of Canada's global and economic postion in relation to the behemoth that shares over 3000 miles of the world's most peaceful border. There is a saying (though it's doesn't seem to be as true as it once was) that when the US sneezes Canada catches cold. As a result Canadians know a lot more about the US than the US knows about Canada. That's just the way it is.

To citizens of both countries: We are lucky that on this continent we have two of the most prosperous and free countries in the world. There is more that makes us alike than different. We both take freedom of expression and democratic diversity as two of our most cherished attributes and in that sense, Iraq is an anathema to both our societies.

'Mister Rogers' Dies of Cancer at 74 One of Rogers' red sweaters hangs in the Smithsonian Institution.

PITTSBURGH - Fred Rogers, who gently invited millions of children to be his neighbor as host of the public television show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" for more than 30 years, died of cancer early Thursday. He was 74.:(

Yeah, I woke up in the middle of the night (emergency potty break) and heard the awful news. Such a great guy... I miss the land of make-believe. Some poeple still live there.

From a kid raised on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood:

"Good-bye, neighbor." :(

Rest In Peace, Fred. Thanks for the memories.

:Werd Mr. Rogers was, still is, and always will be THE MAN. My understanding is that he was in an elite U.S. Military unit in either Korea or Vietnam. Behind what we grew up with and what most people saw, he was a true warrior and definitely one of the good guys.

Here's to you, neighbor! :beerchug

Fred Rodgers was one of the better things about the US ;). His was high brow entertainment. I never cared much for the puppet stuff but the music store and its litany of world class musicians was fascinating for a kid of any age and I always loved the factory tours.

BTW, I thought the Iraq thread had been locked down. Kinda offside to post there when the membership can't respond.

My hat (slip on shoes and zip down cardigan) is off to Mr. Rogers!! He allowed me my first look into a Crayola Crayon factory, "Soda Pop" factory and Candy Cane factory. The puppets were kinda weird but aside from that the show was excellent.

"Let's make the most of this beautiful day....";)

I don't think it's going to be such a bad day...

I like to think that because of Mr. Rogers and what he taught.. it will ALWAYS be a great day to be a neighbor... The memories will always live on..

to me, he will never die...

What are you getting at? This thread is about the loss of an icon, someone who contributed much to most of our early childhood development...

EDIT: Oh, never mind - I see. You think I locked down the thread after getting in one last word. Apparently, you don't know me as well as you think you do. Frankly, I'm offended at the insinuation - I expect an apology.

I'll be unlocking it presently. Whoever locked it can feel free to re-lock it. I won't sit here and be implicated by our resident genius for it, though. Unbelieveable.

Fred had a Citation II that he flew around in, he was here in town visiting Rollins University (where he went to school). My buddy was workin the line the day he came in. He literally walked up to him and says "mind if I look at your plane" and Fred goes "sure neighbor come on in" He's actually that nice in real life, good guy.

On a side note a freind of mine was killed on Thursday at 65 in a crash. He was doing aerobatics in his P-51 and somthing happened to the engine, causing him to make an emergency landing. The plane was found upside down in a farmers feild with him still at the controls. he was a nice guy and a hell of a good pilot.

We have 2 threads going on here, itb was originally as a requiem for our divisive Iraq thread (whcih I finally closed).

One has nothing to do with the other.I am too lazy to split them.

Mr. Rogers was a pretty good dude. Its a sad thing that he has passed on.

But look at it this way, atleast kids today have great shows like CatDog, Cow and Chicken and SpongeBob to teach them. I think the next generation is in trouble.

Hey dammit!! Have you forgotten about the big purple queer named barney and the mumbling fairies called teletubbies. :puke

Bert and Ernie slept together sometimes but you can't doubt their manhood. Oscar was hard as nails. Now they let that damned Elmo all but run Sesame Street. Snuffy and Groover should do a drive by on that red punk.

Thanks to Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dexter's Lab and Little Bill for saving the day.

I should get into the educational programming arena. :thinker

Oh and yes Mr. Rogers puppets were freaky as hell. But he still ruled.

yea, the Sesame Street mafia should teach him to swim. Oscar has those big beefy garbage men who carry him around, I bet he could put the hit out on elmo if he wanted. Bigbird's about to come back in a big way..... it's gonna get ugly.

You havn't seen fear untill you've seen a pissed off Mr. Snuffulupagus (SP)

the talk about Barney the big purple queer reminds me of a song I taught my 6 year old cousin.

I hate you, you hate melet's hang barney from a treewith a knife in his chest and a bullet in his head, arn't you glad that barney's dead

(yes my family has issues)

Grover was (still is) my all-time favorite. I do a mean impression, especially his "Near - Far" bit.

Anyone remember that one?

Oh yeah, anyone who doesn't needs to go to the public library and check out old sesame street videos.

I liked the episodes were he played the waiter that always screwed up orders. The guy he was waiting on was always the blue guy with the bald spot and he would make the sound of whatever he had told groover to get. Classic!!

Not that I actually watched that kiddy stuff. :oface

LMFAO AZ!! I love Grover, ESPECIALLY the "Near-Far" sketch. and gotta love the cape too. Oscar was more of my type too.

Anyhow. i thought Mr.Rogers was great. And yes 89sx, that puppet that lived in the carousel scared the crap out of me. and i never liked daniel the tiger, he was always beating himself up about stuff that wasn't his fault. those puppets were all creepy looking.

anyhow, sad to see Mr. Rogers go, i always thought he'd live forever. he looked well preserved!

Sesame Place, the amusement park, is only 10 minutes from my house. I see the SP water tower daily enroute to work.Thankfully, my son never liked Barney. Ive always liked the Muppets (another Jim Henson creation) "Animal" was a roll model for me...

LMAO, Dees! Those were so funny! The one where that guy ordered a sandwitch (there was a picture of it on the table) with an olive on top and potato chips and pickle was great too! Grover kept having to go back to the kitchen over and over becasue he forgot the chips, and then the pickle, and then the olive... LOL
