I discovered how the E-Bay chips work for those of you who may not realize how they work. Unlike the worthy tuners and professional tunes available for our vehicles (the 2.5 and 3.5 both in mind) there is a simple way to gain a few extra horsepower. Before we begin what I recently discovered realize your engine may run lean and this isn't the best modification out there, but it will only cost $20 or less to make and guarantee you some extra horses.

I was fiddling around on google when I found out some guy was asking about electric super chargers and e-bay chips. One poster on a forum who seems to know what he's talking about posted the following information.

"Yea jgdakotanc you can get the stuff at radio shack. Get a 1/2 watt 10K ohm resistor and wire it to the IAT connector. That will tell the PCM that it is approx 80 degrees outside. If it were me I would buy a 50k ohm pot, a 15K resistor, a DPDT switch, and a small project box and build the IAT adjuster. Then you can adjust the temp to be whatever you want
All of that stuff will cost you about $10 and you will have a better product than the Ebay ripoff. That guy is making a killing.
Buck"

And the poster also revealed the next bit of information:
"Yes I recommend building and using this adjuster...Radio shack will be fine for the parts
Well here is what I did... I went to radio shack and got these parts
271-1321 1K-Ohm resistors $.99
274-407 1-1/4 Hexagonal control knobs $1.79
270-1801 Project enclosure $2.29
271-1716 50K Ohm Linear Taper Pot $2.79
275-691 DPDT heavy duyt rocker switch $3.49

I already had wire on hand so I didnt need any but if you have to buy some, get 22 gauge wire in 4 different colors.
Here is the link for the schematic and some other diagrams

If you need any help email me and I will help you out. You need a soldering iron(not gun) and some good 60/40 rosin core solder. Once you get it made you can use a DVOM to set the adjuster. Larry of J&J Auto made a great post with the resistances and temps they equal. If you cant find it email me and I will dig it up for you. My email is [email protected]

Basically E-bayers are doing this and charging a ridiculous amount of money to change your car's air-fuel ratio. Tricking it that it is hotter outside will pump more air and faster. Like I mentioned earlier though, this isn't the healthiest thing for your engine and can cause quicker wear on it, so it's suggested to get a rocker switch to control it yourself. In fact E-Bay chips work, but they're overpriced for minimal gains.

This might be something worth messing around with before getting a tuner or a tune done if you're short on cash. As for getting better results than a tune or tuner, that might be in your head.

There you have it though. E-Bay chips work but do not give you 50+HP and 25+MPG. In reality perhaps 3-5 HP.

I don't have a tutorial on it yet. In fact, I'm not sure if I'm going to go through with this modification since it doesn't make sense to run it as a daily driver. Too much wear on the engine. I imagine you just have to be handy to connect this to your ecu. Somewhere on that forum and several others that's what people said to do. I might make one for the fun of it anyway for those that are interested.

I don't have any sound clips of the header or exhaust because I can't find the time to record them. I have professional recording equipment though what would capture the sound quite well. For now, just do a search on youtube. There's plenty of Nicoers that have done this already =]! Might record some sounds at another time.

Btw I think yu try to make one and do a write up I would try it if I had any idea how to do it..

:tisk: I don't appreciate the sarcasm that a lot of people have been providing the forums with recently when someone mentions something different. This by FAR isn't the best idea to do to any car but I was proving a point. Most members often ask about the e-bay chips that are sold and even if YOU'RE not into it, some members might be. Running engines too lean isn't a good thing and I mentioned that already. I personally eventually decided I won't be going through with it, even if it is for a few dollars. Yes, it does work, yes I've seen it work.

In case that wasn't sarcasm (which it was) don't do this on turbo qrs. What a terrible idea. Get a REAL tune. I, and everyone else that reads this thread knows this isn't for a real tune but hell.. everyone on here hasn't been trying anything new. I feel pretty bad for the kid with the new paint job. IMHO it's not my style but the same thing is going on in his thread.

Also try some positive criticism. If you believe you have more knowledge about cars then other people (not even including this thread) don't face palm or make fun of the thread creator but say why an idea is good or bad based on experience or research.

Out of curiosity QR25, have you gotten a tune yet? If so, from where?

Wasn't attacking you, just the idea as a whole, agreeing with you that it's not a good idea lol. I have a base street tune done by my friend and I. Haven't gotten to a dyno, based it off of logging and AFR via Cipher. Works great for daily driving. Obviously will gain more on a dyno but I live in s*** town that only has 1 dyno. Working every day pretty much = no time to get there etc.

UpRev is awesome though. Recently enabled the electronic throttle control settings so I can go to WOT from a dead stop. It's great, seems small but makes a huge difference. Need to put in the 10lb spring at some point. I doubt i"ll get close to danny's numbers, but it's fun none the less and saving a lot of cash doing it myself as well. Great learning experience.

Without labor (because my friends helped) it was roughly 2500 or less. Minor problems here and there but I would def budget for more. That excludes the UpRev software/cable and exhaust system.
