agreed! That would be pretty sweet. Id be preferred to be dropped off via helecopter, take a tour, and leave rather than stick around in Ukraine.

You know, I was thinking about going to Surprise, but this is a pretty good alternative.

I think it'd be really neat to check out the abandoned remains.

Of course, I can just boot up Metro 2033 and not have to worry about getting irradiated.

On a serious note, if I had a proper suit, I'd like to take photos of that place. Maybe. Nevermind, I can just go to NJ.

It would be different to see it yourself. Urban decay fasinates me. Detroit is a great place to start our tour....

^This. There are some photographs that just aren't worth the risk. Hell, I wouldn't be comfortable flying over Ukraine air space, let alone being on the ground. No. Thank. You.

Yeah, people have been going on tours of the exclusion zone for about 10 years. It just wasn't "officially" sanctioned before.

In other news, isn't the sarcophagus around the hot core still on the verge of collapse? There was a multinational project to plan a new sarcophagus, but I cost overruns and delays scared away all the investors and the project was mothballed within the last year.

I can just imagine the news story of a busload of tourists standing .5km outside the plant when a mild earthquake collapses the whole thing and sends a cloud of radioactive dust completely across Belarus.

Why not open it up. Some ppl would be truly interested. And depending on what material was actually used in the thermal nuclear process the degradation has probably cleared the area out. You'd be suprised how much WIND can speed up the "breaking down" process of radio active sources. I used to work with live sources in the Non destructive testing field, except mine were alot more serious than what most plants use. One asprin sized piece of Iridium192 can do some really bad stuff to you! Not just genetically either. Im talking body parts falling off.

$3k plus airfare to China will get you into North Korea with full slightly-above-poverty-level hotel accommodations and guided tours. Tough call between NK and Chernobyl.

This is a very interesting read: http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html

It's about a lady who rode her motorcycle through Chernobyl, definitely worth the time.

I suppose when you return from vacationing there, and your friends comment on how you look glowing or radiant, it might take on a different meaning.
