The problem is, you didn't start watching from the beginning. Everything in Initial D, when it comes to the mechanics of the car, is 100% accurate.
Advancing timing *does* increase power. The tach he added was an 11000 rpm tach. The reason the car made more power is because it was tuned for an 11000 rpm redline, and Takumi was shifting at the stock redline, before the power band. When he started shifting at 11k, he was actually USING the power band of the engine.
As far as the Corolla thing goes, the AE86 corolla chassis is one of the best handling chassis of the 80's. Much like a sentra SE-R was in the early 90's. The whole point of the series is that the driver makes the car fast, not the car itself.
