I just happened to look at the car sticker and I see I have 170 HP . I thought I had 175. It's all over the Nissan website as 175 hp. After some googling, I found out that my altima is equipped with the PZEV emissions system. Which I guess stands for partial zero emissions vehicle. I'm still confused on what this means. I found all these cool definitions on it online, but what makes my Altima different from your Altima except that I have 5 less HP. I actually remember the salesman at the dealership saying 175 HP also. So I'm happy I have a cleaner car. This is actually one of the reasons why I didn't go with the 3.5. I saw somewhere that I might have a steel gas tank and different catalytic converters??

Hey Jack,

From your profile, I notice that you live in Cali. Cali is one of the states in the US that has extremely strict emission standards. I"m not sure about the details, but it's something to do with the exhaust (catalytic converters), so that limits the emission, more so than on a regular Altima(175hp). The enhanced restriction for emission, inhibits the engine/power, therefore you get 5 less hp.

tough luck man, you can blame L.A.

Found the following for ya

"Nissan Altima sedans equipped with 4-cylinder engines have qualified for Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) certification in the 2004 model year. The Altima joins its Sentra stable mate in attaining this stringent emissions certification. Achieving PZEV status reduced the Altima’s horsepower slightly from 175 to 170. The Altima PZEV will be sold in California and Northeastern states. "

and

"Nissan was the first automaker to introduce a partial zero emission vehicle (PZEV) with its Sentra CA in 2000. In many areas of California the air leaving the Sentra's tailpipe is cleaner than the air going into the engine"

and

"PZEV releases about 90 percent fewer emissions into the air than the average new car"
