ok here is my deal, I live in Atlanta, own a 96 240sx w/ hotshot headers which removed the 1st cat. I relocated the 2nd o2 sensor behind the 2nd cat (which wasn't empty, I looked into it)... but my engine still throws a code at me after I have reset it after relocating the sensor... I was thinking, since I can reset the ECU and eliminate the Check Engine Light for anywhere about 30 min to 1 hr. or even more of driving, I can reset the ECU the night before, then drive to emissions shop and pass before the light comes on again. Which brings up another question, does the fact that there is no CEL on indicate that the computer still thinks there's nothing wrong? If SO, then hypothetically I can "pass" emissions.

I was thinking of clearing the code and driving up to Autozone and tell them to check my car with their free OBD II exam and see if it'll throw a code on theirs... if not, and IF their OBD II diagnostic computer is the same as the emission place's... then there's hope for me??

I don't wanna spend $150-200 and get an aftermaarket cat that might even beed custom fitting...

Are there any other options for me?

Throwing any diagnostics codes will result in you failing the inspection.

I'd pull the check engine light bulb and just hope that the secondary cat is enough to pass you (which it should).

ZERO_S: I relocated the 2nd O2 sensor behnid the secondary cat using the relocation kit that Hotshot offers, it has wires to extend the sensor, a plug for the old hole, and a bung for the new fitting.

Nismo_Freak: I know throwing any codes will result in a failure I can get rid of the light for awhile because it does not come on immediately AFTER I reset it (there's a time frame of 30 - an hour, which is more than enough for a test done)... my question is even w/ the light off, wouldn't I still fail the OBD II exam when they plug their computer into my OBDII port and find that there is something wrong, even though the light hasn't come on yet?

Nissan said that after resetting the ECU, you need to drive the car 200 miles so that the ECU will not throw a "Not Ready" code... but I don't really think it maters because last yaer I installed my catback and the CEL came on and I failed emissions the 1st time but I reset it and went back 2 days later and passed... obviously in those 2 days I didn't drive 200 miles... so I think I'm just going to reset my ECU the night before and go to it... wish me luck

I just got my EGR fixed yesterday to get rid of my CEL and the dealership told me to drive for at least 50 miles to make sure the ECU doesnt give the "not ready" code. 200 miles sounds a bit extreme.

well as you all know my main concern is with my ECU being "not ready" or giving a code even when the CEL is not on... well I reset my ecu last night by pulling the battery for about 15 hrs... went to autozone like I said, got it tested... and there was nothing wrong.... I only drove about 2-3 miles from my house to autozone... ;].... now I will try to do the same and pass emissions ;]; ]

Do they check the ECU in new jersey? How do they do this? Do they pull off your side interior panel to get to the ECU?

No, all OBD2 cars are equipped with a simple plug. In NJ they plug their computer in and check your car.

However with Hotshot headers you will most likely fail emmissions regardless.

You used to be able to pass inspection with your CEL on, as long as you passed everything required. However they will no longer even check your car if its on, its an instant fail.

This is all for NJ.

yes emission laws in GA arfen't as strict... just CEL check, gas cap check, OBDII check, and thats it... as far as passing emissions w/ hoshot headers, when you buy your headers buy the o2 sensor relocation kit for 15 dollars, then at the same time get an aftermarket cat (if you are willing to spend the $$)
