I dont really think the shop condition matters. My brother has a boat propeller repair shop right next to this guy that does auto body and painting, basically old car restoration. The shop looks like s*** and its in the heart of the ghetto, but when i asked my brother how much he thought the guy would charge me to paint my car- he laughed and said I couldnt afford him. Just find out how long the guy has been in business and ask to see samples of his work (cars he has done)

I think the shop condition does matter. If they can't even keep their shop clean, how could you trust them to have a clean area when painting your car (dust and other debris falling).

yes, thats a good point, but as long as they have a separate painting booth that is kept clean then its not gonna be a problem. There will always be dust in the main area of the shop due to the intense amount of sanding it takes to get a good paintjob. Like i said though, find out how long he has been in business and DEFINATELY ask to see his other work.

Use proper grammer, please. And 850 seems a little low for a paint job. With body work, you get what you pay for.

Did you take your car to macco or something? That price seems very low...Cost of a paint job depends on certain things. Are you going to paint it a different color of just repaint it? What kind of paint are you going to use..ect. A friend of mine just repainted his car a different color stock with PPG paint and it costed him $1900. That included painting everything but the engine bay. The only reason he got it that cheap is because he knows the guy. For a good paint job, expect to pay around $3k.

Questionable Working Conditions + High Prices = Possibly a Reputable Shop

This was stated earlier by 1dollar240. However

Questionable Working Conditions + Low Prices = A Shop I Would Probably Never Visit

$850?! I would be extremely suspicious getting the car done this cheap. I'm not sure about 240's...but Corvettes usually run $4500 at least for a good, not great, paint job.

For $850 they probably just paint over the bugs and road tar;) .

I'm not an authority on the subject...just going off of experience.

Here's what you need to do. Talk to the shop and get details of what they are including in the price. If you want a good paint job, they will at least remove all trim, rope the glass where they can, or removes windows where they have to. If they don't take thse type of steps and just mask off these types of things, the paint will stop where they mask it. This leaves an edge where over time, the elements and even physical contact will eventually lift the paint. If they remove trim, then the paint will stop under the trim and be much less likely to lift. Good paint prep is also important. Ask what their warranty is. Most good shops will offer a lifetime warranty as long as you own the car...

Painting an entire car is the most open type of estimate you will find. All othertypes of work will require a line by line estimate. If you listed all that is needed to paint a car, it would easily be over $3000.

If you have a friend that works at Chevy then let him paint it. They can paint your car whatever color you want. Or, you could just beat the guy until he agrees to paint it for free :rolleyes

i had a guylocally paint my J and it cost me $3000...cash of course. he would have charged about 4K if i wrote a check. The guy did a damn good job and I got a deal on top of it because he was a friend of a friend. Now there's more paint used on my 4 door then your 2 door and paint quantities will easily affect price. He also popped out every microscopic dent he could find and i've yet to find a dent! He also used a good paint and clear coat. $850 sounds cheap, I would rather just buff it with a good stripping compound then pay for a cheap paint job. Be prepared to take care of it though if you do get a good new paint job. Keep it waxed, keep off the bird crap use car cover unless garage parked. A lot of new paint jobs aren't as durable as the factory and tend to scratch easier. I scuffed my front fender up a bit by just leaning over it to look under the hood. Of course mine is black with a VERY glossy clear coat and it shows up more. damn, i had a point....

I got my friend's dad to paint my car PPG Yellow with pearl red and 3-4 clear coats for $900 including body works. He did the door jamb and everything. I think its pretty good for a $900 paint job. Just make sure you see his previous works, especially black car, they show bad body work the most. Heres a picture of it.

A really good friend of mine is enrolled in an auto tech program at this college here, anyways, my 240s paint in body is in pretty ****ty condition, its got a lot of oxidation on the roof and trunk, there's a lot scratches and dents. My friend tells me that the program is looking for cars to work on to teach the students, he said they'll repaint the whole car and do all the body work, I only have to pay for paint, which he said would be $500. It sounds tempting, but I don't want a bunch of jackoff kids working on this car and messing it up. He said they'll keep working on it untill they get it down perfect, I just don't know how long it'll take, you guys think I should go for it?

Hey all,

After you get your car painted, use our product "5 Star shine". You'll get the same results as other high end waxes but have a much better and longer finish protection. It will save you the time of having to reapply wax to keep your paint protected.

Click on our ad on the left side near the top of this page and get the details. Be sure to use the customer discount code "vipdiscounts".-Chadhttp://www.5starshine.com'Never wax your car again"

You'll get what you'll pay for, depend on what your budget is. Cheap paint does look ****ty. First I was gonna take my car to cheaper shop around $800-1000 but I've seen the cars that they did parked out front make me turn my back. I ended up spend $4000+ for my paint job back in April of 2001 for my S14. The good thing is when I painted my S14 the engine bay is already black so I didn't need to do anything to it, just the doors jam and trunk.

What im doing is painting the car myself, in a college class. The tuition, and materials will maybe cost me 300 bucks. The Maaco job is gonna be with cheap paint, and they wont sand out all your paint chips, and generally its gonna look cheap. But i would think it would look nice for the price

dude, $850? Are you going to maccos or something? I don't think I'd trust that. My body shop guy charges about 4-5 grand for a paint job. Professional stuff is the way to go though. You get what you pay for.
